I drove to it a couple of times, totally fun. The trails up high near the fence to be the easiest and most direct route to the beach. Parking at South Point and walking isn't hard, but it takes about an hour. I love the solitude of the walk, it's gorgeous. Please, do not take the sand!! 🤙

Great advice! I agree with that, the trails furthest away from the ocean are the safest/easiest.

Makalawena is way more treacherous drive. Stock trucks can make it to green sands no problem.

Yeah, after driving to Makalawena I would agree with this. That was an intense drive.

I'm going to the Big Island next month, but I don't think I'll be driving on that road! I guess I'll have to walk down. Great video!

Yes, you could walk. There are also locals at the beginning of the trail/road that will give you a ride for $20.

Walking is a good 30 min hike. If you have a jeep rental then this is very easy. We were able to do without much sweat on jeep.

Road in the back of a pickup truck on the way out, and in the back of an suv on the way back. Chiropractor’s and dentists should setup booths at the entrance!

great video, thank you for the details. Definitely doing this on my next trip. How many miles was the drive in? Also 1-10 how tough was the walk down?

Thank you! It is about a 3-mile drive/hike from the parking lot to Green Sand Beach. I would rate the walk down a 2 or 3 for difficulty. The only steep part has a ladder with a railing to hold onto. Other than that just wear hiking shoes and you should be fine. I definitely recommend checking it out on your next trip to Big Island!
