Driving to Papakōlea Green Sand Beach - Big Island, Hawaii
"Papakōlea Beach (also known as Green Sand Beach or Mahana Beach) is a green sand beach located near South Point, in the Kaʻū district of the island of Hawaiʻi. It is one of only four green sand beaches in the world, the others being Talofofo Beach, Guam; Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island in the Galapagos Islands; and Hornindalsvatnet, Norway. It gets its distinctive coloring from olivine sand eroded out of the enclosing volcanic cone (tuff ring)." - Wikipedia
3 Ways on how to get to the green sand beach:
(1) Hike 2.5 miles (one-way) by foot
(2) Drive a 4WD (Some say this is not allowed, others say it's okay. Please do your due diligence before deciding to drive)
(3) Pay ~$20/person to ride a shuttle
**By the time we did this drive and this vlog, there were NO signs saying cars are not allowed beyond a certain point. There were also other cars driving towards and from the green sand beach, some of them are locals.
**I recommend adding this activity to your list of "things to do" in Big Island, Hawaii!

Your video doesn’t do it justice. It LOOKS pretty easy, but I heard her say “I’m scared” This I understand. I think this was the most terrifying drives I’ve ever taken. My husband love it 😂

That’s all thanks to my gopro’s stabilization feature.😂 Definitely one for the books! We enjoyed it though it was scary lol.
It’s not as easy as this video makes it look. We did manage to do it in a stock Tacoma. But it’s limits we’re definitely tested
Next time go up by the top fence line, it’s much easier and faster!! Aloha

State and county authorities are advising visitors to not drive the distance from the parking area at the end of the paved road to the beach as it is drastically contributing to EROSION in the area. It takes about an hour to walk but it is beautiful and the correct thing to do!!!
Did this drive yesterday and it was much harder than it looks on this video. There was a spot my jeep was at a 45 ish degree angle on a curved wedge. Was pretty scary. But it was worth it.

Glad you made it safely! The video definitely doesn't give the trail justice.
This whole area is so chewed up.We hiked out there years ago and it was still beautiful. Too many trucks & 4 wheel drives have changed it so much

I wanna say roughly less than 30 minutes. It was our first time “off roading” so you can probably do it faster. Hope it helps!
