    I just replaced the dual cigarette lighter part of the power cord. Fuse spring on one end had gotten cooked and lost its spring. Works great now!!

    I've had nothing but issues with my Bowie since I bought it new. At first, it ate igniters. No big deal replacing them, but you would think the cables would be insulated a little better as their jackets seem to melt and the igniters would short. It's gone through three thus far. Then, it was the temp sensor and the meat thermometer. Replaced both of those. Lately, it seems to be the board that's giving me fits. The problems that manifested themselves were around the reliability of long-term cooking. You couldn't just set it and forget it. You'd come out to monitor the progress to find it had either shut down completely or the temperature would inexplicably plunge, and maybe it would recover, and maybe it wouldn't. Very frustrating. Now, I can't seem to set the temp any higher than 260 degrees. It's only about 4 years old and I don't want to throw a buck-30 at a new board. Guess I should'a got a Traeger...

    I hear ya. I have had issues with mine as well, as you can see.... The first models seemed to be fairly bullet proof, but the newer models seem to have issues all over the place. Recently I had similar problems that you had in regards to low temperature. I decided to download the latest updates, as I read on a forum that might help. It took me a week to finally get it to download and update. I just couldn't get the app to connect to my home network. I finally ended up calling tech support and spent 25 minutes with them on the phone until we finally got it figured out. My grill temp is once again hot, and maybe a little hotter than it should be, but better than it was. Either way, I hear you.

    I fix these for locals and I have repaired about 100 of them so far. Loosing all 3 motors? I may see motor drive issues but generally it's 1 not all 3 and a low cost Triac i believe a BTA20 or a Diode that opens up. If all 3 check connections by Removing power board form cpu board it is 2 screws top and bottom most likely the pins connecting the 2 boards have corrosion and making poor contact.

  • @TDScotty

    Agreed. I was just showing how to test all three motors to eliminate any of those as a possible issue. you will never have all three motors go out. But occasionally, somebody will want to test them. I believe the Motors now are DC and not like the ones I show in the video. In this instance, it was my circuit board that was the problem. It’s been 3 years since I replaced it and so far everything‘s been running great! Have a Happy New Year!

    The connectivity on these is total junk. Used to love how easy it was to connect to this grill. Now it won’t talk to my home network and unless my device is less than ten feet away from the grill the app is trash. I’m so close to tossing it in the lake right now

    Capacitors are a very common failure point in circuit boards and are very cheap to buy. Biggest challenge is unsoldering the existing caps but lots of videos on how to do this. I spent $10 on 6 replacement caps which go to my refrigerator circuit board, put them in and was good as new. Saved me $600 on a new board. Something you might want to try next time.

    Good point! I will definitely consider that in the near future. In fact, I have done a LITTLE bit of circuit board repair over the years (home appliances mostly- dishwasher, etc...) but I definitely do not consider myself an expert, by any means. I actually looked at the GMG board on this and although it looked fairly simple, but the replacement was in the ballpark of $125, so I opted to go the easy route on this one and not try my luck. Plus, the other big issue I was looking at was that I had this issue during the COVID lockdown in my area. Many companies were either still closed, or were facing the "we're out of everything" issue, so I wasn't sure about availability of any parts locally. But I will definitely take your advice for any future issues! Thanks again!

    Can you please post some pictures with some markups so we can better understand. My background is not power electronics or circuit boards. But yes having the same symptom as in this string. And now the darn thing will not even power on the controller, yet power up to the last plug in is hot.

    Ive been having trouble with getting to temp, and then holding it. I will set it to 225 it will get there hold for about 5 min. then drop to 190 and then slowly climb back up and repeat.????? seems like everything is working other then holding temp and getting their in a timely fashion

    Those issues can be a bit of a challenge to diagnose. GMG has made a number of upgrades since their first grills rolled off the line. Their are software updates that can be done through to phone app now. You also have a temp sensor that could be giving you trouble. Could be either of those to be honest....Might be a good ideal to call their tech support line and let them go through some software troubleshooting questions with you. That will either fix the problem or allow you to move on to the hardware troubleshooting- Which normally comes after you have eliminated software and settings as a culprit. Keep us updated and good luck!

    Did replacement of the control board fix your problem? I have a very old Jim Bowie (problem 12-15yrs old) I have just started having some problems with it. The hot rod stopped working, so I replaced it with the new ceramic one. Ever since I did that I get a code on the display "oul". I am going to test all fans like you did, as they are alot cheaper than the control board.

    Good question! Normally that is a great place to start. In this case, my auger wasn't feeding any pellets, which is the first step in the grill startup process for this particular grill. So I had to first figure out if my auger motor was shorted out, and I while I was at it I tested the 2 fan motors- and they both tested good. These grills are programmed to feed pellets before the igniter energizes, and since that wasn't happening I knew that I had to start with the auger motor and go from there.

    Temp sensor maybe? That is the cheaper fix if it’s just the temp sensor. Might be a good place to start. Otherwise it could be the control board.

    Yes, a lot has changed in the last year or so, for sure. The particular issue I was having was a failed controller. And you are correct, GMG now offers has upgraded software and igniters, along with upgraded auger assemblies. The industry is ever evolving. Years ago I owned one of the very first DB’s ever made, and I can’t believe how things have evolved since then. Anyway, keep on being “relatively safe”!

    HI. Can i put a GMG no WiFi Control Circuit Board in a GMG with WiFi?

  • @TDScotty

    @TDScotty

    2 жыл бұрын

    As far as I know it is basically the same board, with the exception that it doesn't have a place to connect the WIFI antenna. So, my guess (and it is only a guess at this point) is that you can use a Non WIFI board- but that Non WIFI board won't have the terminal to connect the antenna. I would think it would work, with the obvious exception of no longer being able to use the WIFI anymore. Just a guess on my part. Let me know what you find out! Thanks!

    The igniters normally get REAL hot. Ash shouldn't cause it to fail like that. My unprofessional guess would be that it might not be getting enough voltage from the control board. If it IS getting enough voltage then the igniter is bad and you would need a new igniter, but it has been my personal experience (I bought my first GMG in 2008} that the control boards seem to go out much more often than the igniters do..... Just my two cents.

    @@chrisstone3954 Gotcha. I was just saying that I've owned several different models and I've never known that to be an issue with the igniter unless maybe you had a ton of ash over it. Anyway, glad to know that fixed your issue. Mine was a control board issue. It has been performing "as good as new" once I replaced it.

  • @bkaiz

    @bkaiz

    Yup. Keeping it nice and clean, with a total clean every 2-3 bags of pellets (I'd say 2, personally) is going to protect the igniter and just improve the general performance all around. The less the debris/ash, the quicker it will heat.

    Agreed, you should never put 110- 120 volt AC to a 12 Volt DC motor. As I mentioned in the video, you need to look at the ID Tags first. This particular model has fan motors that are all 110 volt AC. I totally agree with you, and the ID Tag was the first thing I checked before I did anything further. I think the auger motors as well as some of the fans on the new models are 12 Volt nowadays, but definitely check first like I did.
