Green Monster Opal - 4800 carats
The Green Monster opal is a huge chunk of brillant green Andamooka matrix opal, owned by Riley Gunn of nnOpals (53 Frogs on Opal Auctions).
The stone weighed approximately 4800 carats initially. In the video, I tumble and grind the huge rough opal, then treat it with concentrated sugar, then concentrated sulfuric acid, which was successful in that it turned the background black! (Andamooka matrix opal treatment success is judged by how well the sugar and acid penetrate into the stone.) Sulfuric acid reduces sugar molecules to pure carbon, which is black.
Matrix opal is normally light tan to white in color and the "fire" is difficult to see. With treatment (if successful), the background becomes black, and the enhanced contrast makes the color is easy to see.
The quality of matrix opal can only be judged AFTER it has been treated (if the opal has minimal visible play of color in the untreated state). Such untreated opal has no real value for jewelry because its color is imperceptible. Treatment is therefore necessary.
Safety is an important aspect of working with concentrated acid of any kind. Hazardous material gear is absolutely necessary. Clothing must cover all exposed parts of the body and a hazardous material respirator that is rated to handle acid is necessary. Eye protection is imperative and a respirator mask with face shield may be best.
In the video, I treat the stone to identify the color, then I sliced parts off to be made into cabochons. Gemstone cabochons, for jewelry. Smaller pieces were used to make two small arrowheads, which are beautiful. Cabochons, arrowheads and opal flakes are being given away.Concentrated acid must be disposed of in the manner required by law in your location. You may contact your local authorities to get the requirements and directions in this regard.

Love your work! Your sense of humour makes me watch your channel not just the lovely Sheila and the Stunning Opal
I can't even describe the pure satisfaction I feel when listening to the snapping sound of you knapping the arrow heads. Another amazing video!
Well played sir well played.. Rylie single handily leveraged advertising from the best Opal channel around by sending some amazing Opal for the fans! Gave this man his joy while making his fan base happy You have gotten my attention 53 🐸 ❤️ Arrow heads are awesome, do you think you could make a Opal wand Harry Potter type 😅
I wasn't expecting the arrowheads! I can't believe how much different it turned out compared to the other opal arrowheads you have made. Love it. It looks like to would feel different from the opal in used to handling.
I've never been a fan of arrowheads. UNTIL NOW. Look at those beauties! Who knew they'd look like THAT! GORGEOUS!
Holy moly! Those pieces look amazing after treatment!!! Loved the end result!
How someone ever came up with that process to treat a seemingly ordinary rock into something so pretty, I'll never know. Seriously, who thought "I'm going to bake this in sugar" was a good idea just to begin with? It's just nuts. It did make for some gorgeous stones and arrowheads though, hell, even the little jar of chips was pretty.

Always felt that way about cheese which was discovered when some guy stored his milk in a goat skin flask and when it turned solid thought, "I wonder if that will be good to eat?" Yikes!

@@PulitzerOpal Fantastic information, thank you!
hey that's such a cool process, treating the matrix opal in such a way that it changes color.. chemistry is amazing. how long did it take for the color to develop in the arrowheads? they're really unique.
Stunning arrowheads Colonel. Nice chips too. I always enjoy head ing to your channel to watch your latest rants.
Love the arrowheads again!! And beautiful stones! Nice video!!👌🏽👌🏽 bless🙏
I was seven when I found my first arrowhead out in the pasture by the pond at my great-grandparents' homestead. I still have it, fifty years later. These Andamuka opal ones are much more colorful, though. Sure would be fun to win one.
I really enjoyed watching the whole transformation process with your commentary especially and the weird little clips here and there. Dung beetles, cats and kittens, they all played their part to make the entire 12 minutes very entertaining. Thank you v
The fact that you not only create more beauty out of the awesomeness I find from these stones in the rough - just plain brings me joy!! Thank you for that.... and thankyou for creating arrowheads - it is a skill that should be kept going and by making the new ones people can leave the artefacts where they lay out of respect to those that used them all those long days ago! I only just recently found your channel and am loving your dry humour and your skill!! thankyou for the content you create!
I love matrix opal, it's just so sneaky. The arrowheads came out beautifully and full of gorgeous colour. Thank you for sharing!
Mini rant explains more about Andamooka matrix than all opal channels combined, most just focus on precious opal and verbally describe a little about matrix. well done yet again :) Those arrow heads are the most unique this humble viewer has ever seen.
Gosh! You are a'head' of many. Lovely tones!!!!!!
Oh my gosh! I love those arrowhead stones! And the cabochons too! Beautiful!
Those ARROWHEAD 's are SPECTACULAR!!!!! Another fantastic video sir!!
Arrow Head I appreciate all your videos.Started cutting ooals about 15 years ago as a hobby. Thank you for your knowledge
So glad I've stumbled across your videos. Watching you work your magic is so relaxing. I adore the red chips from the arrowheads. Can't wait to see more videos!

Those are some pretty looking arrowheads you got there. Fantastic video beautiful colors. Sheila looked pretty happy
Some fantastic results you got in that treatment, loved the rant at the end. 🤪👍
And just like that you're my favourite youtube channel! Every opal you cut looks gorgeous and the fact you give them away to others is probably even more beautiful than the prettiest opals themselves. I hope you receive just as many blessings and btw those red matrix Arrowheads look amazing for a first attempt with new opal! I can't wait to watch all your further uploads!
Those arrowheads are awesome! Going from colorless matrix to those great colors is magical. And you really have no idea what you are going to get until it comes out of the treatment. Great job!
Thank you for videos. Glad you enjoying making them ))
Wonderful work on the teardrop, cabochons and arrowheads. Thanks for your entertaining and educational uploads as always 😊

Andamooka arrowheads - just wow! I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful they turned out.
This was the first time watching your channel and I'm impressed with your opal process. I've loved opals since I was 9 years old and received my first and only opal for my 16th birthday. I love how opals have a range of colors. I never imagined you could make arrowheads with an opal stone, well done!
The stars of the show are certainly those arrowheads, well done Sir, fabulous video, voiceover and creations as always.
I'm an opalhead. Great work! Seriously, I've never seen this process from start to finish and it was fascinating. Thank you. 💖🦅🦅
WOW..the arrowheads are brilliant! I love the red fire in opals. And the opals in the glass vile are awesome as well.

I had no clue this was a thing, absolutely amazing bit of chemistry, and beutiful stones!
Going ahead and leaving a comment about those beautiful arrowheads. Great video and great job
Well uncle, seems to me you spend some amount of time in TX, I'm an honorary Texan myself. An honor not often bestowed upon us simple minded Okies. Growing up searching for Arrowheads in creeks and riverbanks it's wonderful to see one crafted out of such a pretty stone. Maybe one day i can bring one home to Indian Territory, feels as thought its only right.
Great show as usual, the stone turned out to be beautiful. The process does my head in and the arrow heads would look so nice on my wife's neck. Thanks again.
I have always loved Andamooka opal and those 2 arrow heads are just my style. thanks for the vid
Love your videos, especially the arrowheads. Riley unique ha ha.

Those arrow head opals are beautiful. It is amazing the color shows up after treatment. I agree, keep your chips. Someone will love them. Actually, anyone into opals will. I hate that I got my notification 23 hours after you posted. It didn't even show up when I was going through my subscriptions yesterday. Love how the opals turn out.
