Those engines powered the P-38, P-39, and P-40. They powered the P-51 until some Brit test pilot said "I wonder what would happen if we stick a Merlin in this thing?" The Allison wasn't a bad engine. Allison was told to not bother developing a supercharger. GE would handle that. GE fell short.

I'm not the aviation expert having only served in the US Army aviation rotary wing (helicopter) at Fort ill's 14th Aviation Battalion. My "birds" consisted of the Bell UH-1, AH1 & OH-58, the Boeing CH-47 and the Sikorsky CH-54 Skycrane. The Skycrane is still used exclusively by nearby (10 miles) Erikson Sky Crane fighting fires worldwide under a different nomenclature but whenever they're circling over the house or I see one, they'll always be a "CH-54" to me. It's the only rotary-winged aircraft I've ever flown in.

+soaringtractor I'm reminded of this old fart who claimed he flew a P-38 in Korea. He was dead serious! Speaking of Lockheed, my late best friend's late mother worked for Lockheed in Burbank, Ca. during WWII installing the nose cones on the fuselages. She had some funny-ass stories. She was tiny and Lockheed liked her because she could crawl inside the wings and do shit. One of her stories she was working on a Constellation and they pulled her out of it and wanted to test fly it. She told them if they flew it, the tail section would fall off (or wing, can't remember) and they brushed her off. Sure enough, when it landed, it happened. I know it sounds far-fetched but I don't think this lady was smart enough to come up with a fairy tale like that. I was her power of attorney and ended up with all her "stuff" (useless junk mostly) and one goodie was a mint pair of right and left-handed tin snips in a nice metal box. The box had a "Property of Lockheed" metal plate riveted to the lid. Nice aviation collectable! I sold it for $80 I think. Still have a little WWII-era Lockheed "stuff". She died at the age of 97 and was born in 1914.

@jrloopy1984
10 жыл бұрын
Less force needed to turn them? Just guessing.
@mitchamus
10 жыл бұрын
so it's harder to flip it by making the centre of gravity at the front axle closer to the ground.
@iforce2d
10 жыл бұрын
mitchamus Hm... is that a definitive answer or just a guess? Seems to me they could just place the axle higher with a larger wheel to keep CoM low. I'm guessing it's something to do with some rules they have to follow.
@MsSomeonenew

Categories are in part determined by weight, that is why the rest is also made of no more then tube frames. And the more weight you save the bigger your engine can be.
@1hvyeqpmnt
10 жыл бұрын
My guess would also do with weight savings. But also they can build a more stout, small wheel tire that can live up to all the load being thrust upon them as the front crashes down. So durability and strength.

n. woody The V12 engines are definitely becoming as scarce as hens teeth and costing nearly there in gold or at least silver. I remember back in the mid to late 70's about half the unlimited tractors in the US were powered by V12 and the rest were split between Hairdryers and V8 that had there cranks bolted together and timed as 16 cylinders and now and then 24 cylinders engines or some off the wall power plant that the tractor owner dreamed up. Now most all pulling tractors are Hemi V8's of some form or Big Block Chevy's all plumbed together the same way. I am not taking away from the new tractor engineering design but truthfully they don't style and attitude or ingenuity but that is just my opinion and opinion are like certain body orifices everybody has one.

you're wrong in standard form they were designed to put out about 1450 horse depending on this dash number. anything above that is called abuse or a waste. but if you didn't care how long it lasted yes you can get 4000 hp out of it but you better have a lot of extras on hand if you want to keep using them

***** Thanks Its a great song.
I can't be the only one that wants to see these guys put on a wheelie bar and take it down the drag strip...
They're 2 x Allinson V12's V1710's to be precise. 28L each, 4000hp in standard form each.
The engines seem to me to be 2X Allison V 1710 - V12 engines used on the longed-for aircraft of the WWII Lockheed P-38 Lightning and Curtiss P-40 Warhawk.
Funny how a little video like this still gets haters commenting and major shit talking
Why are the front tires so small?
@diecksl
10 жыл бұрын
All the power is sent to the back tires. No need for (expensive) large front tires.
anyone wanna look up the mean green machine,lol,look up art arfons.he ran super mods in the states with twin turbines and sat in between almost on front tires.he also held land speedb records at Bonneville salt flats to.live tractor pulling

Why do they make the front wheels so small?
@jrloopy1984

Less force needed to turn them? Just guessing.
@mitchamus

so it's harder to flip it by making the centre of gravity at the front axle closer to the ground.
@iforce2d
10 жыл бұрын
mitchamus Hm... is that a definitive answer or just a guess? Seems to me they could just place the axle higher with a larger wheel to keep CoM low. I'm guessing it's something to do with some rules they have to follow.

Categories are in part determined by weight, that is why the rest is also made of no more then tube frames. And the more weight you save the bigger your engine can be.
@1hvyeqpmnt
10 жыл бұрын
My guess would also do with weight savings. But also they can build a more stout, small wheel tire that can live up to all the load being thrust upon them as the front crashes down. So durability and strength.
The last kicks of the Marshall Plan..
6:00 Is that a centrifugal supercharger? If so, it's the first I've seen on a tractor.

Why each tractor has the same base? Are there a lot of limitations like in F1?
@MrJoDE

n. woody The V12 engines are definitely becoming as scarce as hens teeth and costing nearly there in gold or at least silver.

Pretty cool to see that style tractor again. They are all but extinct in the states now with multiple Hemi's or BBC's replacing them. But that announcer still needs a beating.
That is fucking insane, yeeeehaaaaa
I've been involved it tractor pulling most of my life and I love the sport..If I would have had to put up with an announcer like that every weekend, I most likely would have given it up or he would have gotten a fist in the face every time eh tried to open his mouth..15 min and I almost switched to something else..

8:18 oops.. :)
you're wrong stop the video at 02:55 and count the spark plug leads you see, then look at the valve cover it says Allison V-12
What a strange racing event, drag racing tractor things?.... Awesome :D
JEEEEEHAAAWWW
Those are Not V-24's look up the Allisons 1710 and the 3420 you'll see those are 1710's they have 2 exhaust ports per cylinder.
Christ, do our announcers here in the US sound this nuts? Almost Japanese like with all the sound effects and such. Is there something different about euro tractor pulling that they cant use the engine after a certain point and have to coast? They all seem to shut the engine down well before they get to the end
@pullingworld

Simply ran out of gear....heavy track there that year.
you're wrong in standard form they were designed to put out about 1450 horse depending on this dash number. anything above that is called abuse or a waste. but if you didn't care how long it lasted yes you can get 4000 hp out of it but you better have a lot of extras on hand if you want to keep using them
Could it be that there is loud music in public happenings so that people would not exchange ideas with each other?
that is a v24?????? :/
@juggis
9 жыл бұрын
TheFirestoneHD(YT) Looks like Allisons have separate exhaust pipe for each exhaust valve port. Well V12, 48 valves so four per cylinder, 2 inlet valves and 2 exhaust valves per cyl, so you get the picture....
