They would need to have creative thoughts to be able to create original and new characters. Since they don't they can't. Read George Orwell's 1984. Winston Smith lives in a world that had no past, since the past is constantly being destroyed. And the key world here is CONSTANTLY to insert "The Party's" mandates. Winston lives in a world that has no past and no future. Only a horrible present that never ends.

Kinda seems like the reason the book has nothing but incredibly weak depictions of homophobia is because the modern "oppression" they experience is so minimal that they can't concieve of the real thing or depict it without trivializing the modern struggle.

Especially since it retcons his relationships into "I was super gay but then I had two children with my wife but then I decided to be gay again". If he wasn't attracted to her, then why would he be so intimate with her as to conceive Jade and Obsidian? I mean, they COULD just say that he's bisexual and only pair him up with men from now on like they did Tim Drake and Jon Kent, but I guess THEN people would grow wise to their antics (plus it would diminish the whole "ZOMG- ALAN SCOTT IS GAY!" retcon that they're so proud of). Thank you for your noble sacrifice. You have taken one for the team and read this unrecognisable bastardisation of classic characters written by clowns, with little understanding of the fundamentals. In fact, I apologise for the comparison that insults clowns.
Allen's powers are different then the Corps, but Will and imagination are still quite important. So his constructs and such should be weak AF right now. A hug? While in Spector form? Not as Jim, but as Spector? Goddamn it.
His constructs should shatter like spun sugar glass.
Apparently modern writers, and I guess their audiences, need everything spelled out for them in detail. That old expression "explain it to me like I'm 5," has taken over all narratives. Next they'll be writing these scripts in crayon.

I blame it on the editor and editing staff. These new young writers are coming up with these stories and these old editors don't want to seem homophobic or racist let them write these stories without question. Let the editor do his job and pose the right questions to the writers to make the stories more interesting and entertaining.
This reminded me of that one episode of the Fairly Oddparents when the Crimson Chin spends all the pages of a comic book in a fetal position...
I always give props to critics who give alternative ways the story could've been written to highlight the issues. It speaks volumes when the consumer can think up a more engaging storyline which would still even benefit the allegory the author is after.
I never knew that the Golden Age Spectre was ever so chatty and cuddly. How… sweet…
If nothing else, I would expect that a hug from the Specter would be bone chillingly cold.

I realized that most of the writers for shows and comics now are basically just journaling.
Spectre should be the LAST member of the JSA to hug this version of Alan Scott.
I wonder if the guy that gets called 'Alan Scott' in this series is really Tim Sheridan's poorly-disguised SI.
Well said. This version of Alan Scott is completely different from any version I've ever read, and not because he's gay. Like you said, he's lost his heroic qualities in this story.
Tim Sheridan wrote a Gay Man in the Closet in the 30s-40s comic with a lot of angst instead of a Pulp Hero/Superhero comic.
Makes as much sense as Disney Star Wars lightsabers.
All tim has done is shown that Fear isn't a GL's greatest foe. it's depression and self loathing.
Is it any wonder that manga is currently outselling DC and Marvel, and that indie comics is getting more and more popular?
JSG: "They're trying to flip them off, but they're using all the fingers except the one that matters." Me: "Shocking."
Maybe the problem is tackling this in an us vs them mindset. Or maybe its the taking of established characters and poorly retconning them to be gay.
id love to see a modernised version of that green lantern suit
go go emo ranger
And maybe, instead of going into the comic with the goal to pass off a bunch of potential readers, you just make a good story with some. "What do you think about this?" elements.
I can't even wrap my mind around the idea of the Spectre being sympathetic. To anyone. He's literally Divine Wrath. He should barely be able to get through the day without killing someone for a fleeting thought.
If you want to read a good writer's take on a gay character, that puts the character first, then you realize they're gay but don't care go read Warren Ellis's Authority. Hell, go read any of the Midnighter mini-series. Garth Ennis did a great job with the character in the Kev books. They joked around a little, but in the end it was in good fun. Also Kev usually got his for talking shit about Midnighter being gay! Those are good writers!
I've actually been writing my own interaction of this character and it's precisely for some of the reasons you are commenting about here. I can tell you, he's NOT gay. he has willpower and generally is something special.

This is why I can’t stand “writers”, “actors”/activist hired to “champion marginalized groups” by writing us as mere cliche stereotypes. There’s a films called “Our Son” about a married couple going through a divorce and fighting for parental rights for their son. Nothing new, except the couple is gay. The story itself felt new in the genre of gay films, unfortunately there’s parts of the film and story that goes into those same stereotypes. The gay couple isn’t monogamous, one of them hooks up with someone at a gay bar (after a heartfelt moment which steals all the emotions away from the scene) and of course all of their gay male friends have daddy issues. When it gets away from that, the film is actually pretty good. Though Billy Porter and Luke Evans have very little chemistry. But the story still works. The problem with mainstream media is that they don’t realize, THEYRE true racist and bigots. Because they just use the same troupes over and over again and declare anyone who doesn’t like their cliche trash is a racist. Like the bomb “Bros”
If you are a long-time fan of these characters you may even notice all the other continuity, characterization and canon this series undermines. It is like current DC has no editors.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't really read green lantern, but as far as I know, Alan Scott is the only green lantern that DOESN'T get his power from his will. His lantern ring isn't made by the guardians, it's just a random meteor/magic stone or something? At least it was in his golden age appearance. Maybe they retconned that in the last 80 years, but as far as I'm aware, he's the literal only green lantern to not run on willpower.

You're right like even with the retcon they did (where it was fashioned by the Guardians) it was straight up magic and not the sort of nebulas scifi/fantasy the current Lantern Corps stuff is
Seems to me Sheridan didn't consider that people like Hoover would be keeping tabs, so the MC can't consider it because the writer wants to reference noted historical figures but didn't understand their motus opporendi. Hoover was incredibly paranoid, and wouldn't have let the matter drop. I agree entirely, so that is a continuity error that should have been avoidable. It's a writing issue. The scene with the Flash just makes me think Sheridan wanted to set up a fight, and had no clue how to make one happen justifiably. There's no reason for Scott to get defensive if he asked a friend to help him here. Regardless of the attitudes in the 40's about being anything other than straight. The flash wouldn't have been one of those types, as a powered individual (the world has NEVER been kind to those that are different - which is a seminal issue with the X-Men) so the whole thing is pointless, and shows lacking skill in creative writing. If he doesn't understand what he should be writing, nevermind how to actually write it, I do wonder how he got the job. Similarity in politics, and ass-kissing can only get you so far.
"This is madness?" THIS. IS. HOLLYWOOD!! (boot to the chest)
10:53 Oh, I can explain that massive shift very easily: he met this version of Alan.
Sacrifice EVERYTHING for the sake of "THE MESSAGE"
You nailed it.
Funny enougth Hoover has been suggested to be gay and a transvestite by multiple Historians (seriously its a reoccuring joke in red dwarf) I half exspect it to be a "twist" at the end. Also Sheridan missed huge trick, the Specture in stories set before the JSA dispanding is written more in line with his golden age interpretation were he's got a strange all knowing stand offish air to him but is still very much human, the aggressive murder trigger happy version was a product of the character's revival. If he was smart instead of showing Specture as a corpse like and demonic figure, he'd lean into the more human and heroic version to build on his character and demonstrate how much a near century of superheroics has taken a toll on him and just how far he'd fallen.

Don't be so hard on Alan. He's a straight man using all of his willpower to be gay. If he's gay for 10 years, he'll lose his weakness to wood.
It’s no wonder Tim Sheridan never mentioned the story during his announcement trailer - his story is as stale as watching bread turn moldy within the next few days, and no one in his/her right mind would spend their money reading this.
Ostander's run on spectre was one of the best in DC history and that specific chapetr is great. one of the best exmples of character growth and a writer putting his political opinion in a natural and non-grating way (and without breaking the character for story's sake)

Showing it's always been possible if done correctly. These modern types are quick to contradict themselves by saying 'well politics was always there' as well as 'inserting gay or other issues is not political'. Iger certainly said that. If they won't even accept they're inserting a political stance yet not telling a story nor developing characters beyond their personality is just their sexuality, how can they fix it? You can't fix what you won't acknowledge is broken.
The original Green Lantern’s powers weren’t strictly defined by his willpower like they were with Hal- his ring was magical in nature, and had nothing to do with the technological rings of Oa and the Guardians. Now, having said that, magic is usually intrinsically tied to one’s willpower in many depictions, so an argument could be made that, yes, saying Alan’s ring is based on willpower is *_technically_* correct.
I was under the impression that comic canon accurate Alan Scott's Green Lantern powers came from magic and had nothing to do with the Oa Guardians or the Lantern Core or the power of will. At least that's the way I remember from my comics I've collected.
The guy is not gay. His kids are jade and obsidian ( if i remember correctly)
I always thought "willpower" was a Silver Age addition, along with the Corps. The Original Recipe was magic, and therefore didn't have to make sense (has the writer mentioned the weakness to wood yet? I doubt he'd have the sense of humor...). As a gay guy, I find the wallowing in our collective victimhood offensive, but I've mentioned that before here. So, unlike the writer, I'll let it go.
The only logical explaination is that This is all an alternate timeline.
And now we know WHY modern comic writers (main stream) chose not to follow decades of continuity. This way they can tell the stories they WANT to tell and not the stories they are SUPPOSED to tell.

Why are the companies who are losing money hand over fist by allowing this still allowing it? Are they trying to make these companies worthless with the intention of auctioning off the IPs which can be worth money if in the right hands? Coz I can't come up with anything else. Okay, "The docks" as a pickup spot for gay men gets my attention. "The docks" did not become a hookup spot for gay men until the 1970s, when they were abandoned because all the shipping was going to the container port in Elizabeth NJ. The southern tip of Manhattan, formerly a shipping hub, collapsed economically. That's why the WTC was built there. For awhile "the docks" were popular spot to meet other men for illict sex, sure, in the SEVENTIES, and only in New York. If you went down there during the era in which this series is set, you would find, you know, a bunch of people unloading ships.
Literally the lefty wall of text meme, in comic form...
Yknow maybe it would work as a concept if despite the prejudice he still stands strong in the face of it. Idk Ive seen Brooklyn 99 I can see someone like Holt be a green lantern. Just cause youre gay doesnt mean you cant exhibit stocism or stand up to prejudice instead of moping.
So true.

So, let me get this straight. They brought in Jay Garrick Flash, one of the weaker flashes, but known for being the father figure everyone wanted. A stand up dude who notoriously is all about a person's character rather then color of skin, sexuality, or religion... And they try to get The Spectre, the living incarnation of God's Wraith, or cannonically has hated gays, and is effectively only bound by a corpse... to comfort... and support... a weakened green lantern who has yet to do actual super heroine. ...What the fuck is going on here?

The only thing worse than the comic are the gaspingly excited comments on Facebook about how great this piece of trash is. And if you don't agree-----then you're a bigot!
The problem with making a story to "own the chuds" is that there are no chuds left reading comics. At least definitely not from The Big 2
Started off talking about cups of tea, I'm listening.
As a fan of The Spectre, I'm disappointed that he was written badly in this series along with Alan. Thanks, JSG, I'm not going to collect this series.
7:35 considering it IS the spectre C while stupid is the only answer that has a chance of working. The spectre is not beaten by alan regardless so circumstances and is above the fifth amendment. I don’t like the comic and openly think Alan was better as a homophobe who wanted to love his kids regardless. But between the 3 options c was the only one that doesn’t get his body broken and his mind violated.
I honestly didnt realize Allen Scott needed will power since hes not part of the GL's as his ring is magic and not technology like the power rings of the Corp.
Actually this Green Lantern is not driven by willpower.
God bless JSG
Alan Scott Green Lantern is magic based and not based upon Will Power
Well his will power keeps the power in check. Well it should be out of control as it is power of starheart and magic based unless they recon that to.
He isnt gay. He has a wife and two kids. It doesn't own anyone to change that.
This encapsulates the core problem with all woke entertainment. It's about whining and feeling bad about your problems instead of overcoming them. It's a very female way of thinking about things. You don't have to do anything to fix your circumstances or grow, you just need to make yourself feel better by expressing your emotions.
And then they came for my favorite superhero… Hurts seeing Spec’ look so stupid here.
Ah , but you see . the author WILL's it to be . (Because OC/my self insert cant be affected by things like "established Continuity" and "Consencuencis that would logically happen but i dont like")
A "willpower for superpower" exchange would be an interesting tradeoff/twist
What a shocker that incompetent writers produce unbelievably stupid stories, it's almost as surprising as fire being hot or water being wet.
DAMN!... your voice changed... 😅Now this should be called: Just Some MAN!
The mistake you make is you think anyone cares about characters being gay. No one cares.
Is this just a modern comics problem with men who have determination and will? You can't even have your gay hero possess these traits? You have to make him an emotionally feminine gay stereotype instead of a badass who is also gay? So the book, like the rest of mainstream comics, can't stomach anything that looks like "toxic masculinity", even being shown by your gay hero?
Alan Scott was never gay. They only made him gay after new 52 on Earth 2. That Alan Scott had a better story than this new one.
