When my father was 10 years old he once took the sheep out for feeding. Greece 1953. He was not supposed to get far away from the village but he somehow went too far. So at some point he got tired and thought to take a nap. Tne nap turned out to be a 6 hour sleep. My grandfather found him in a mountain nearby. My grandfather saw the shepherds having made a circle around my father while he was sleeping to protect him. 3 of them. the 4th hadn the sheep gathered in a nearby well of shorts. Great guardians. They will protect you no matter the danger. They will fight bears wolves other dogs you name it. Just to keep you safe. I myself have a labrador.. If she saw godzilla she would go to lick him and be his friend. All dogs are perfect

This "Greek Shepherd" is not to be confused with a Sarplaninac formerly also known as Illyrian Shepherd Dog (Macedonian and Serbian: Илирски Овчар) Russia use them as prison guard dogs and Yugoslavia has used the as an aid dog in there army since the 1930's. This dog could probably win against a shiatsu 😅

I rescued Greek shepherd mix from Thessaloniki to Finland four years ago. He's my first own dog and first lgd I've worked with. He's calm and goofy, affectionate and gentle. But he's also independent and smart and will turn furious in a heartbeat if he sees a threat. Will warn even about hawks and vipers. He watches over poultry, that's one of the hardest animals for dog to accept without attacking them. He thinks the flock as his pack and loves them. ❤ He has charmed everyone who has met him with his personality. It will take some time for new people to win him over, but after that, he's a big teddy bear with a great sense of humour! If you are looking for rescue dog, I would highly recommend Greek shepherd type dogs. Just make sure that the dog you are looking for, is fit for your livelihood and that you can change your own if needed. These dogs mature pretty slowly and dog that's ok with city life as 1yo, might not be that way in next two years.

I’m sorry but There’s a bunch. Every American hunting breed will attack a bear. Bear hunting with dogs is an American tradition. Also pit bulls were bred for bull and bear baiting which is attacking bears and bulls. Also most livestock guardian dogs will attack anything they believe is a threat

Me and my family are from the main land of northern Greece and brought back a black variety of Greek Shepard to the UK and is such an amazing fit it too the family. I think if we didn’t bring him back off the streets he wouldn’t last another month. He’s big healthy lovely coat string character lovely temperament and just pure fun. Looks into your soul when interacting. Lovely with all humans but yes has to be trained and loved to adjust its wild side but once done are great laugh. Such a trusting breed if you get right environment. X

These dogs can also be vicious around strangers, growl at you, display their teeth, and even attack you, chase your car, etc., so do NOT approach them if they are not on a leash, or without the owner being right there a couple of feet away. They are gentle around family and close friends/relatives only. Most of them do NOT take well to strangers. Do not walk up to them, especially without the owner accompanying you or without his consent that it is safe to approach. I have run into them a few times in the mountains guarding flocks when my dad and I used to hike in Central and Northern Greece, and have also run into them in couple of towns in the mountains. In every encounter with the shepherds and their flocks we were told not to approach the dogs. Some of them also had spiked collars with fairly large spikes around their neck for protection from wolf bites, and those can be dangerous to people as well. I was able to approach one with its owner/shepherd while he was sleepy and relaxed near the flock that was grazing in a field on top of a mountain. The shepherd sort of held him down while I petted him for a few seconds. I was 12 at the time and the shepherd said that this one shepherd dog out of the 4 he had was the one that was good with children and safe to pet, but he still walked over with me to make sure. That one was a very large (mostly black) around 55-60kg with a massive chest and head, and spike collar. What I noticed when we walked up to these their flocks, was that the dogs were almost always spread out in the perimeter of the flock and had the flock surrounded. They do not herd the sheep but just sit or walk around from a distance always looking around and scanning the flock and surrounding areas. They are just there to protect and nothing else. Some of them do have different personalities because it all depends how they were raised from a young age and if they were around people or populated areas. Those that were, tend to be friendlier and not a threat to people (as much). The ones that spend half the year in the mountains with the flocks, are not as friendly because they do not have much human interaction, or were just raised like that. The ones that are friendly were sometimes trained (hard) to be that way. This breed is not easy to train. They are a very autonomous breed like most dogs breeds whose job is to protect the herd.

There’s this really sweet one that I’m planning on adopting, the second it saw me it came up to me and starting licking me. He follows everything around and he’s so kind. I’ve only heard him growl/bark when this dog starting attacking him (he doesn’t know how to fight and he can’t defend himself btw) Update: we adopted him

There are 3 types of Greek Shepherd Dog. The White Shepherd, the Molosus of Epirus and the classical Greek Shepherd. They developed differently because of the different enviroment they lived. F.E the Molosus lives on the western Greek mountains (Pindos) and in Albania, the Classical one is found more on Macedonia and Thessaly.
