Greek island CRETE: Venetian Fort of HERAKLION (Koules)

Heraklion, Crete, Greece - the Venetian Fort (Koules ) of the city of Heraklion in Greece. Let's visit The Koules (or Castello a Mare - "Fort on the Sea" in Italian) which is a fortress located at the entrance of the old port of Heraklion, Crete, Greece. The Venetian Fort (Koules ) of Heraklion was built by the Republic of Venice in the early 16th century, and is still in good condition today. The Venetian Fort (Koules ) of Heraklion is made up of two parts: a high rectangular section, and a slightly lower semi-elliptical section. Its walls are up to 8.7m thick at some places, and it has three entrances. The fort has two stories, with a total of 26 rooms, which were originally used as barracks, a prison, storage rooms, a water reservoir, a church, a mill and a bakery.
Heraklion, also known as Iraklio, is a port city and the capital of the Greek island of Crete. It’s known for the Palace of Knossos, just outside the city. The huge archaeological site dates back thousands of years to the Minoan civilization, and includes frescoes and baths. Guarding the city’s Venetian port is the 16th-century Koules fortress. Heraklion Archaeological Museum has a large collection of Minoan art.

You sure make learning fun. Thanks for this interesting tour, and for sharing your historical wisdom, Vic. The image of the piled up canon balls made me think of it as an art sculpture (so beautifully filmed!)
