Greek island CHIOS: Medieval Castle of Chios (fort of Chios)

Castle of Chios, Greek island of Chios - the fort of Chios (the castle of Chios, the citadel of Chios, the fortress of Chios) in Greece. Let's visit the historic Castle of Chios which is a medieval citadel in Chios town on the Greek island of Chios (ΧΙΟΣ). The Castle of Chios (the fort of Chios, the citadel of Chios, the fortress of Chios) is situated adjacent to the main port of Chios and its east side borders with the sea. The Castle of Chios consists of an inhabited area surrounded by a large stone wall structure with various fortifications purposed to defend the enclosed population and properties against naval attack and siege.
The Castle of Chios was constructed in the medieval period with its first construction phase having started in the 10th century by the Byzantines. The structures surviving to this day are part of later construction and expansion dated to the time when the Genoese, who maintained commercial concerns, ruled the island during the 14th to the 16th century.

Nice trekking to the castle of Chios! Very interesting for anyone who wants to go to Chios to see them. like me. I'll go this summer. But the houses you say, are not Ottoman, are Greek architecture 11:13 . You can see the same house in Ioannina in Epirus and in the Greek quarter of Constantinople. Greeks stayed in these houses or the Turks encouraged them to stay. The Ottomans were nomads, they had no architecture, they all learned from the Greek Byzantines . and had Greek masters and workers.Friend. in Greece you can speak loud, let others hear you. You speak clearly and have a good automatic translation. However the video is unique and great, as one would go on to explore it on their own, with great information!

Hi and thank you for watching my videos and for your comments. It is, in general, accepted that such architecture is 'Ottoman' in style even though realistically it is Byzantine..

At 12:29 he actually shows the outside of a ruin restaurant. Also at 13:20 he shows some large openings/holes in the wall of the fortress, those holes lead to some internal man-made tunnels that goes really far into the land; there is a strange things in there, dead cats, sleeping bags, rats, trash. Also one of the tunnels leads up to the top of the fortress. And the it's just bang-next door to a refugee camp (I was there around 2016, so it might not be any refugees there anymore.

Thank you for your comments. The large opening you saw at 13:20 was too dangerous to enter due to the amount of garbage everywhere.. the refugees (when this was filmed) were present..

Beautiful old structures. If they would remove the vegetation from the walls and towers, they would definitely hold up better.
