Among the many Gon/Killua training sesh's there are in HxH, Greed Island's is definitely my favorite, Bisky is such a great character/teacher and there are so many funny moments between the three of them.

Thought itd be the 4 main characters getting their license and traveling but no two of them aren't even in the show and half of the show is looking at furries play knock off chess in the same castle. Expectations really ruined it all for me

I am glad that I am not the only one who thinks that the Greed Island Arc is the most underestimated and influential not only on the relationship of Gon and Killua, but also partially on Gon's character development. Glad you released this video. Keep it up bro.

Thanks man. I've always thought the most underrated aspect about Greed Island is how well it transitions Gon/Killua's relationship for Chimera Ant, which is why I really wanted to make this video overall. I'm glad other people feel the same way I do.

I think Genthru does an awesome job at highlighting Gon's insanity.

@@PhenomSage I think it's because of how normal and average of a villain Genthru is compared to other HxH villains. During the fight, he was freaking out in a way no other HxH villain would. Genthru is also a practical benchmark for Gon. It's not just Bisky saying "you're not as good as high level hunters". We know from that actual fight that Gon isn't stronger than top hunters but he's a lot crazier. Another point is that Genthru doesn't overshadow Gon and allows the series to focus on our MC. If this had been a Chrollo vs Gon or a Hisoka vs Gon fight, we would've gotten really cool fights, but this development and this set up for CA? Definitely not. So yeah. Sorry if I rambled too much. Hunter x Hunter just has too much stuff to discuss about its characters. That's something you said in your video and it's true. Edit: grammar

@Alan i whole heartedly agreed with you, Greed island arc make me fantasized about the many many items in the games as well as their power system. Chimera arc is basically a generic Shonen arc, with OP villians and heroes fighting each others. There is no creativity, no room to think. Such intricate power systems got thrashed by pure power. I just hate that arc now that I grew up.

Haha that's funny although ironically probably one of the most ideal arcs you could've randomly stumbled upon in HxH since there's less to keep track of and things to know to understand what's going on.

I just finished this arc a few days ago (currently doing my first watch of Hunter x Hunter) and while it wasn't bad I can definitely see why it might not be as appreciated as some of the other arcs. The Heavens Arena and YorkNew City were some of the best and most heart-pounding arcs I've seen across all of Shonen, not to mention I've just begun the Chimera Ant arc and I've heard NOTHING but great things about it so I'm very excited to see what all happens there. All that said though Greed Island was still pretty good, the show did a great job setting up and foreshadowing it all the way back at the end of Heavens Arena so everything naturally leads to it, I'm a HUGE fan of video games, and specifically RPGs so the game Greed Island turned out to be was something right up my alley. The villains weren't anything special but they were threatening enough that I definitely was on the edge of my seat by the time I came to for Gon to face off against the main baddie and his arm getting blown off was an absolute shocker. Hisoka was probably the biggest surprise here though, I mean the intro shows him teaming up with Gon and Killua but he genuinely seemed to enjoy being around them and was clearly giving his best during that dodge ball match. Despite all the crap he's done to them up till that point I almost don't see Hisoka as a villain anymore, at this point he's a character that Gon and Killua would prefer to stay away from but if they need his help and he can get something out of it he'll likely step up and help and they don't need to worry about him betraying them, and the end where it's revealed that one black dude was the exorcist all along was so well done, definitely didn't see that one coming. So yeah, overall I liked Greed Island, it felt like the Virtual World arc from Yu-Gi-Oh done right. Instead of hinging the entire arc on the likeability of one character (the rival no less) it's instead built on the premise the series started with...Gons' search for his father. The game is well crafted and thought of, the world and NPCs are pretty interesting for the most part, and I very much appreciated that while this does have the typical "if you die in the game you die for real" caveat they aren't stuck in the game until they complete it ala Sword Art Online, which allows for certain characters to still leave and do other things like Killua leaving to get his Hunter's license. Aside from Hisoka being an ally the biggest surprise for me was the reason the old man was hiring people to complete the game in the first place, the fact that he just wanted to save the woman he loved but unfortunately ran out of time to do so (another call back to Yu-Gi-Oh done right) and the scene where he explained all of this was so sad, I genuinely felt bad for the man. On the whole, this is where I'd rank the five arcs so far that I've seen: Hunters Exam 7/10 Great start to the series lore, world and introduction of the main characters, Zoldyck family 7/10 Short and to the point though nothing all that important happens here as a result, Heavens Arena 8/10 Excellent introduction to one of the best and most unique magic systems I've ever seen and the fight between Gon and Hisoka was legendary, YorkNew City 9.5/10 THIS is how you do a revenge tale! Excellent arc, had me excited and intrigued from start to finish, some fantastic development for Kurapika, and one of the best group of villains I've ever seen. Greed Island 8.5/10 Some great work solidifying Gon and Killuas friendship and one of the best examples of how to do a virtual world. Hisoka was arguably at his best here and that dodge ball match was one for the ages! Really looking forward to finishing the show, and I'm especially excited to see what makes the Chimera Ant arc so good.

Was a treat to read this bro! What you mentioned about Hisoka is part of what makes him such a great character, he rides the line of antagonist so closely where at some times you're rooting against him and other times you can't help but love him. He's a character I feel like I never really appreciated enough until looking back and seeing how often his role in the story changed. The subplot with the old man who was hiring people to save the woman he loved was something I kind of wish I talked about more in this video because it's so lowkey and yet it recontextualizes a lot of the people's motivation in the arc in an interesting way, and kind of ties into the themes of Greed Island overall. In general I think I agree with your rankings, I would probably put Greed Island over every arc in the series up to this point except for Yorknew, which is pretty hard to beat for me since it appeals to a lot of things I love in storytelling, with so many epic moments/characters. I'm stoked for you to watch Chimera Ant for the first time, it'll be kind of hard to keep up here but if you want to message/talk with me on Discord, I'd love to see what you think of it as you go through. @@PhenomSage Hey thanks for the kind words man! I've kind of been itching to finally give my thoughts on the series up til now just because of how good it's turned out to be. I decided to try it at my brothers recommendation and he usually is pretty trustworthy when it comes to trying out new things but I still didn't expect this show to be anywhere near as good as it is. Chimera Ant is shaping up to be great so far, not as good as YorkNew City but still very interesting so far.

Greed Island is my favorite HunterxHunter arc. I stopped halfway through the Chimera Ant arc. But Greed Island? That was *chef's kiss*.

Yeess!! I was shocked when I found out that most of the fandom doesn't like greed island, it's one of my favourite arcs! I mean I kinda get it cause when I just started I thought "ill just watch this so i can get to the chimera ant arc" but like... the introduction of one of the best characters, bisky! Gon & killua shenanigans!! Training scenes!!! Hisoka working with them!!!!!!!!! BISKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even though the chimera ant arc is more epic and stuff i definitely had more fun watching greed island! Also, if you watch hxh you probably love gon and killuas relationship. So you love watching them do stuff together. So I dont understand how u can not like greed island!! Its PEAK gon & killua time!! So yeah i just agree with everything you said. Great video dude 👍😄

The whole experience is just so fun and feel good, which might be why people are harder on it cuz they like the darker stuff in Yorknew/Chimera Ant.

Even after watching the whole show the Dodgeball game is still a stand out moment for me and dodgeball alone justifies Greed island's existence. Greed Island is also crucial for where the Chimera Ant arc takes Killua and Gon's relationship. Idk if some of the events in CA would hit as hard if we didn't have Greed Island first. Also even though they are broken up into arcs I don't think there's enough appreciation for how well the arcs flow into each other. the first step to finding Ging was obviously becoming a hunter, but the experience of the hunter exam leads Gon eventually to Wing where he learns nen which gives him a clue to greed island which is intertwined with another plot that came out of the hunter exam by the game being available at the yorknew auction, then when they finally get the game and beat it, it directly leads to the Chimera Ants. Funnily enough when Gon finally finds Ging it wasn't really that he had finally tracked him down. the end of Greed Island is really the last time he makes a deliberate decision to get closer to Ging on his journey, because after that he gets sidetracked by the biggest most sprawling epic side quest ever and the fallout of that side quest just drops Ging in his lap.

It really is pretty interesting how cohesive Hunter x Hunter is as a whole despite the fact that the majority of arcs in the series kind of just start out of nowhere, Greed Island is one of the few that actually naturally flows into itself, but despite that it never really feels jarring when an arc like Heavens Arena just starts. Also good point about Ging, I actually love how Gon finally meeting Ging doesn't really have anything to do with his own search throughout the series, there's kind of a beauty in how anti-climactic it is.

I fully agree. This arc is a lot of fun, thought provoking, and it never bores me. It is very well paced, fitting into 17 episodes. And the training session is great as it really delves into Killua and Gon’s progression. I find that section so interesting. I just don’t get the criticism.

part of the hate that it gets, might be from the fact that on the 1999 version (which for some of use was the first we saw) it was not nearly as good as the 2011 being a lot more censored and slower. or at least that was the filling I got when I first saw it. also it wasn't even part of the show, it was an ova.

I watched the recent Toonami run of HxH and honestly, I had varying interest throughout the various arcs, but Greed island defintiely piqued my interest more than the previous one, and that carried me into and through Chimera Ant. I really enjoyed it

The sheer fun of watching this arc is uncontested. The dodgeball game is one of the most fun experience I've ever had from watching any form of media.

I've had this video in my watch later since it came out. After finally watching it (I haven't seen the last arc yet though, so I'm looking forward to that), I agree with you 100%

Hunter Exam is also super underrated, It's super fun and has it's own merit but I only ever see it brought up as an obstacle to people enjoying the series which I think is a shame

Honestly I was surprised by the amount of hate Greed Island got when I finished the show. By the time the arc ended, I genuinely thought "wow, this show keeps getting better and better." I prefer it over the yorknew city and it progressed Gon's and Killua's character arc so much, naturally leading into the themes of the ant arc. Also, Genthru is better than most of the Phantom Troupe individually as a character and a villain imo. I legitimately think he is underrated and his fight with Gon is on the same tier as Hisoka vs Gon

@@PhenomSage I mainly just appreciate his simplicity and the looming presence he has over the game as a in game "legacy" that no one uncovered up til that point. I love what the phantom troupe stands for as a collective but as individuals, some of them are not that interesting to me and haven't shown much promise. I thought Genthru as a concept and roadblock for this very specific game though was handled very well for such an arc.

Don't worry, I have more HxH video ideas jotted down for the future, as well as some of my other favorite shows that I feel like I should give more attention. It's tough because for a lot of my favorites it feels like a lot of people have beaten me to the punch for videos I would like to make about them, but I've also come to terms with the idea that if I feel passionately about a subject/topic, then I would want to make a video on it anyways, even if it's already been discussed. Thanks for the interest! It definitely makes me want to get on that sooner rather than later.

The Hisoka, Gon, and Killua dodgeball game sucked me into the arc, at first I was kinda meh. But they way that unfolded, was so well done and fun to see someone like Hisoka actually work together with them, without some kind of backstab trope.

What I didn’t understand about the arc is Ging’s request that Accompany (and only Accompany, not Magnetic Force) redirects Gon to Kite rather than Ging. After seeing the last episode, I would think the opposite to be true, that Ging wouldn’t want to see his son if he didn’t learn the “it’s the friends you make along the way” lesson given at the end of the anime. Any thoughts?

I think it's a mixture of things, one, Ging is really immature and childish so he probably thought that was clever and funny. But it also might have to do with that sense that he only wanted to meet Gon when he became a great/strong hunter, so the idea that he would only visit Ging if he could bring someone along might be a sign of being too weak to find him on his own.

Greed island is definitely above the phantom troupe saga for me, and probably neck and neck with the chimera ant saga, though I think it had better pacing than the chimera saga. Hard one to call. I just love all of HxH 🤷🏾‍♂️😅

I personally think its because it went by way too quickly in the reboot. I think the 2004 version is better it gives a little more context, not to mention the opening and ending themes are dope.

A lot of the criticism I hear is that people don’t think Genthru matches up to other villains in the series. Which is fine. As it is true. He is no way as interesting as Chrollo or Meruem. But besides the fact that Gon’s best battle in the entire series is against Genthru, he isn’t even the only villain in the arc. Gon only faces off against Genthru after he teams up with Hisoka of all characters to face Razor, a character who is on the level of Chrollo and Meruem. And the dynamic of Gon’s relationship to Razor is much more intimate than it is with other villains save for maybe Pitou. In fact if Togashi found a way to have Razor as the final villian who Gon and company would have to face off against after defeating Genthru I believe the perception and general favor for Greed Island would be a lot more positive. On top of the battles with Genthru and Razor it introduces Bisky, it has more Phantom Teiupe shinanigans, it’s a really cool world to explore, thematically Gon only wins the quiz at the end because he defeated the game “the right way”, which I love. It has so much to offer and it never stretches beyond its welcome. The anime goes from start to completion in a mere 17 episodes. I love Greed Island and the more I hear it discussed the more favourable people begin to see it. And that’s awesome.

I personally wasn't very invested into Greed Island as a concept and it very much felt like a filler arc in terms of its content. Also thought the villain was really lame. I'm actually making a video about HxH at the moment and I was trying to see what the appeal of Greed Island was for those who enjoyed it. And that's what brought me to your video!

i loved this arc, it helped me make my way through the worst arc in my opinion, the chimera ant arc. my favourite parts of the show were probably when everyone was having fun. and in all honesty, the adult gon part is terrible. its creative i guess, but it doesn’t fit right with any of the other arcs. the chimera ant arc also has standard episodes that are a literal pain to watch because of how boring it is. its like rewatching the same gorilla slip on a banana dude. of course the start was ok, but the episodes started to feel long. so i just rewatched the whole show to experience how fun the greed island arc is. (imo the chimera ant arc barely adds to the story except for some emotional conduct between the characters. it was nice to see gon and everyone be reunited though.) :)

I viewed it as a creative training arc. I got more from the arc in regards to seeing the story elaborate on nen and the boys development. I don’t really rate Hxh arcs because all of them have flaws that are overcome by the high points of them. Greed Island is no exception to me, especially when the dodgeball match happens.

i recently watched this arc, and it absolutely killed me to get through. the fact that gon is willing to sacrifice killua's hand's to win a dodge ball match, (not a life threatening battle) is absolutely selfish, all because he doesn't want to try anything different. Then Gon blows his hands up because he is stubborn and refuses to follow through with any plans. it annoys the absolute fuck out of me that gon never learns anything, and is always void of any consequences because the writer always has something that fixes everything. also why did gon and killua need to impress that rich guy to get into the game when everyone who went in was trash. the card system is irrelevant and never really comes into play. the only thing this arc did was make me appreciate SAO, and i think SAO is trash.

I really disliked Genthuru and whoever his friends were as villains, but Bisky was a cool character.

During that season and they barely even use the cards in that episode because they mostly just ended up doing regular nen training anyway

i thought it sucked and had 0 place in the hunterxhunter anime. It was shit after the phantom troupe and it was utterly forgettable after watching the ant arc people dont hate rpg's or card games, i think that is completely off point. Even if they did it would be because the rpg elements and card game stuff in this arc were completely unnecessary and just bland and boring

I don't think that greed island is underrated, I think that it's fucking dogshit, was the most boring arc by far, and it alone stopped me from rewatching the series.

I've always said that HxH would be the best anime ever if only it forcefully introduced aliens and forgot about/sloppily wrapped up all of its established plot threads in the final act.
