It is mind boggling to think the constant clash between Greece/Byzantine Empire and Persia/Sassanid Empire weakened them to the point that the Arabs could explode and create the caliphate allowing the Ottomans to come in and basically cause the Age of Discovery and shape the modern world. I think Iran might be one of the most respected countries in Greece precisely due to its extremely long history and deep culture.

Just like the movie _My Big Fat Greek Wedding_ ... the locals are very friendly, kind, warm and don't mind inviting you for a big traditional Greek lunch etc. I know people who have had such fortunate encounters, when visiting the Chalkidiki region, or the islands of Crete, Rhodos and Santorini etc.

As Greek from Macedonia I thank you for mentioning our region since it isn't as popular as the island or other regions in Greece and the neighboring country of the north doesn't help much with that. Macedonia is Greek and it's history is Greek and not Slavic as our neighbors want the world to think 🇬🇷

Especially in Soussa town, there are many Greco-Libyans comming from Crete, maybe from the population exchanges between Greece & Turkey. Cretan muslims went that epoch to Libya and Syria. North Macedonia has a slavic population, Hellas has a Hellenic one. The Slavic peoples didn’t move anywhere near Hellas until much later. Ancient Hellenic Civilization is Hellenic, not Slavic, by birth (DNA), language, history, politics and culture. Great video, I appreciate the climate information, people assume Hellas is always hot and dry, it isn’t.

As a Greek I have to say that our cuisine is among the most underrated in the world…also a lot of the focus of tourists goes towards the islands but mainland Greece has some truly spectacular places to visit

And despite that being very underrated its in the taste Atlas 2022 fighting for the number 1 spot out of 195 countries for the tastiest cuisine in the world leaving tge rest of the cuisines well behind and also out of the 50 best cheeses in the world 13 being Greek (number 1), 11 being Italian and 6 being French. You can check it out with a simple google search. And yet still Greek cuisine is underrated because I still meet a percentage of people who havent tried a whole tsunami worth of wonderful dishes. Greece has over 20 regional cuisines and then the Politiki Kouzina which is the Greek byzantine legacy of the cities of Constantinople and Thessaloniki worth thousands of dishes by its own. Let alone the other regional cuisines on top of that

Greece is 80% mountainous with breathtaking landscapes and views around every corner. 20% of all of europes Ultra peak mountains lies in Greece. Ultra peak mountains are mountains that rise atleast 1500 meters above its lowest surrounding point. Meaning the real visual height of a mountain. Greece has 19 Ultra peak mountains. For reference. Switzerland has 8, Austria 12, Croatia 0, Spain 4 on its land territory. Meaning Greece is a tremendously mountainous country with truly spectacular scenery that most people dont know. Greece has also 400 wetlands another thing most people are not aware of. with Greeces 80% mountains and 16.000 km of the most crystal clear waters, there are also a lot of rivers and deltas and and so on from the mountains towards the sea. For comparison. A country the size of Turkey has only 110 wetlands. So it comes to give an idea of how wetland rich Greece is. Also Greece has 800 natural hotsprings which is some of the most in the world. Also 15.000 caves. A whole arch of many volcanos. Among which Santorini is the largest sea volcano in the world Another thing. Greece lies on 4 tectonic earthplates which gives Greece its immensely diverse mountains, landscpses, geology, immensely diverse geography and topography. Greece lies on the European, African and Asian plate which comes together inside Greece. And the 4th one is the one that got crushed inbetween the other 3

For even just incredible mountains all throughout Greece you can check out - Epirus (incredible prefecture full with stunning mountains) - Zagori - Pindus mountains, - Vikos gorge (one of 3 deepest gorges in the world and the deepest regarding width-depth ratio - Tzoumerka mountains, and it's many waterfalls - Aoos gorge - Timfristos mountain, - Aoos river - Acheron river - Mount Olympus, rising 2918m meters straight out of the sea and is one of the 10 most prominent mountains in all of Europe - Tymfi mountain with the incredible dragonlake on top of it - Taygetus mountain a wonderful mountain that rises also 2400+ meters out of the sea close to the coast which gives dramatic views on both sides of the mountain - Kremasta lake among many other mountain lakes with incredible scenery around and incredible water colors in various parts -Rhodope mountains, one of the least degraded forests in all of Europe. there is a very good 1 hour documentary on the Greek part of the Rhodope mountains on KZread - Koronisia an incredible polynesian group in the Ambracian gulf which was many wetlands too rich with birds - Plastira lake another wonderful mountain lake - Smolikas mountain with a dragon lake and outlook on the mount Tymfi - Acheloos valley with an incredible river delta and scenery very unknown to people - Voidomatis river together with the Archeron river and Aoos river one of the cleanest waters in all of Europe and even the world - Prespes lakes, also is incredible and different, it has less than 3 people per km2 and the scenery reminds of Mongolian scenery - Mount Giona, Mount Vardousia, are both mountains opposite from eachother 2500m - Evrytania region is another incredible mountain region with one of the most untouched mountain areas like Agrafa mountains - Meteora, a perfect geological paradise among many other lesser known and plenty geological paradises - Mornos lake - Kerkini lake which is 1 of the 2 most important birding places in all of Europe - Amvraikos gulf - Methana and Methana volcano - Parnassos mountain, - Dirfi mountain on Evia - Aoos lake, - Mesolonghi wetland - Lake Doxa between mountains - Mount Chelidona, - Pelion mountain of the centaurs - Lichadonisia another wonderful polynesian island group - Mount Aroania, - Athos holy mountain, the only monastic state in the world. the mountain rises 2034m straight out of the sea. Incredible views like all the mountains in Greece and so on and so on. One thing people have to understand is. 1. ALL of Greece's mountains truly rise from sealevel. What I mean is. The mount Olympus rises almost 3000m from the sea 0. So the real mountain height is 3000m. 2. When you are inside Central Asia you see a mountain of 3800m. But you are standing on flat land that stretched hundreds of kilometers and this land is on 2100m. Then the mountain you see infron of you is not 3800m but 1700m. THAT is the real height of the mountain. In other words the prominence of a mountain. And if a mountain rises more than 1500m above it's lowest point then it's called a Ultra peak mountain. Greece therefor with 19 Ultra peak mountains is truly a mountain heaven

Which is only logical given its immensely diverse landscape with 80% mountains, with wonderful immensely crystal clear rivers but all rivers being non navigable due to the diverse mountain terrain over which the rivers flow down to towards the sea. And with over 300 mountains covering 80% and Greece having 20% of all of Europes Ultra peak mountain as a testimony to its mountain paradise, Greece has therefore the immense potential of Wetlands which it thus also has. It is a high culmination and density of beauties of any kind. In every corner and every spot of the country you can find wonderful mountains in the vicinity, wonderful coastlines of any kind with the most crystal clear seas in the vicinity, immense gorges like the longest gorge in Europe (Samaria) and one of the 3 deepest gorges in the world (Vikos), 15.000 caves, wetlands, rivers and lakes anywhere in the neighborhood, 800 natural hotsprings which is a huge amount too found and scattered over the lands, at least 5 archaeological sites withon a 3 mile range almost anywhere in the country (Greece has over 18.000 registered sites in the database). And immense biodiversity also due to the isolation that gets created by Greece's immensely diverse geography and topography, islands and mountains. So much in fact that Greece has one of the most bee species in the world amounting to 1100 species about, only matched or surpassed by 3 or 4 other continent sized countries like USA, Brasil, China. Anyway. Greece is a paradise for nature lovers, hikers, botanists, herbologists, canyoneers, but also bird lovers, geologists, food lovers and history buffs alike. The most special thing of the country is that in a single day you can do all of it. You can easily be in the mountains in the morning, stumble across historical sites completely untouched even, be in the forests, lakes and rivers and end your afternoon with a dip in the sea and eat dinner after in incredibly picturesce towns and villages dotted around the country with a wonderful sunset over the sea highlighting the many layers of mountains, other parts of the mainland and islands on the horizon. Which is yet another special thing in Greece. When you are in Spain you look out to sea and see nothing. Its 1 simple shape on the map. In greece looking out over the seas anywhere is a treat to behold at any time of day. One of the many things not thought of but comes to mind when carefully analizing geography. But yes. In Greece you dont have to travel 500 km fo the first mountains, 300 km for the first sea, 250 km for archseological sites. Its everywhere in gorgeous abundances

Η απομάκρυνση από τίς πατρώες αρχές καί ο άκρατος ευδαιμονισμός ευθύνονται κατά μείζονα λόγο γιά τό πολυεπίπεδο αδιέξοδο που βιώνουμε ως έθνος. Οι προοπτικές είναι-κακά τά ψέματα- δυσοίωνες καί όποιος λέγει το αντίθετο νομίζω ότι εθελοτυφλεί.

I live in a very mountainous part of Greece, I think they are underrated. It is amazingly beautiful.

Some facts about the dispute over the name of Macedonia that most people might not know… 01. Slavic Tribes arrived at the region of the NORTHERN PART of ANCIENT GREEK MACEDONIAN LAND (North Macedonia today), approximately 900 years AFTER!!! …the death of Alexander The Great! 😂 And AFTER, THE FALL of ROMAN EMPIRE. 🏛 Greek Empire was BEFORE!!! Roman Empire’s existence Thus they can’t be linked as “Macedonians”. Slavic tribes came from the East North to today’s “Macedonia” but they just step on it, that’s all. Nothing common with Greek ancestors or Alexander the Great. They just step on A PART of a northern land, of the old Greek kingdom of Macedonia. Alexander’s Macedonia was stretched from West -Southern Balkans, Northern Greece to Eastern Bulgaria. Today’s “Northern Macedonians” just grabbed the advantage of the history of another nation, and try to confuse the world, that might not care or don’t know about history. But we Greeks had enough of this joke. And Bulgarians too. 02. Macedonia was an Ancient GREEK kingdom and Alexander was speaking ANCIENT GREEK Macedonian. Macedonians were a A GREEK TRIBE. Ancient Macedonian language was an Ancient Greek DIALECT coming from the Greek DORIAN dialect. Not to be confused with the “modern” Slavo-Macedonski or simply Macedonski as it is today in NORTHERN MACEDONIA. Which is a Slavo Bulgarian dialect. 03. Even after centuries during Turkish Ottoman Empire where Greece was enslaved and occupied by Turkey for 400 years, (Balkans for 500 years), THERE WERE NO ETHNIC GROUPS like MACEDONIANS to both regions of the 2 today’s countries, (Greece and North Macedonia), according to the Ottoman archives. There were Greeks, Turkish, Jews, Bulgarians, Slavs, Roma 04. People of North Macedonia today may falsely consider themselves as Macedonians but in reality they are an ethnic group of Bulgaria Their language is an Eastern B dialect of Bulgarian with some slavic elements in it. All this fuzz about the name is the Stalino-communist propaganda creation of Yugoslavia leader, named Tito. North Macedonians were mostly Bulgarian tribes. But Tito would loose so much land territory. The south part of Yugoslavia. So half of them were killed because they didn’t want to change their ethnic identity as Bulgarians, but the rest of them were convinced that they were a slavic Macedonian individual ethnic group. Cause they weren’t 100% Yugoslavians. They were speaking Bulgarian in a Yugoslavian land. So Tito wouldn’t dare to say you are Bulgarians. During that time Yugoslavia and Bulgaria were at war. It’s like he would surrender the whole south part of Yugoslavia to Bulgaria. So it was inevitable that future generations would be raised as Macedonians through the years in today’s N.Macedonia. And then claim our Greek history and Alexander the Great and the Vergina Sun symbol on their flag. Northern Macedonians nowadays, and their language HAVE NOTHING TO DO with Greek language or Greek ethnicity. They just stole this name to have sth to grab at, during these troubled Balkan territories, back at the time. An identity. Even if it is fake That’s why until nowadays BULGARIA was putting VETO for EU MEMBERSHIP on today’s NORTHERN MACEDONIA. Because of their identity. “Bulgaria invoked its veto power on negotiations with would-be members in 2020 to block North Macedonia's candidacy based on accusations that the Macedonian language was simply Bulgarian by another name and Skopje was disrespecting its shared cultural and historic ties to Bulgarians”. It slowly "became" Greek, sure the population in Balkan and West Asia Minor was mostly Hellenic, up until the 20th century. But the culture, the language, the way of life, was 100% Greek (Hellenic).

In the 2018 Prespa Agreement North Macedonia officially renounced any claims/heritage stemming from the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia and thus also Alexander the Great. There is no reason to be diplomatically equidistant on a matter that has already been successfully resolved.

sorry dear unknown friend, but whatever you learned about the Hellenic language from physics and mathematics is only 5% from the treasure of uncountable high mental meanings that exist in Hellenic language. Our language has a holly power by itself; the ability to make the human brain start thinking! For example, everyone talk about democracy, but try to find how many countries have the name «Δήμος(=people)+Κράτος(=power)» in their official name. Almost none! The used name is «Republic», which means (from Latin «rēs+pūblica») "the public thing", in contrast with the word «ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ» (in its original Hellenic form) which actually means "the power to the people"!

My husband is Greek and I really appreciate seeing something about the country - although of course my family taught me most of your videos content anyway :-)

The main reason many cities in Hellas, like Athena, don’t have beautiful architecture was the destructive earthquake in 1954, which destroyed many lovely neoclassical buildings. The cities had to be quickly rebuilt and many cheap, modern buildings had to be built to house the population. That era wasn’t a great one for architecture in any place affected by WWII, Europe and other parts of the world were economically devastated.

I have never heard of this being a reason as no one earthquake destroyed all those buildings in the same year. I would say it was the huge influx of people from the country migrating into the cities after both WW11 and the Civil War and before that the people exchange that took place in the 1920's, that needed urgent housing,and probably prevented any proper town planning being made that was the outcome we have today. I have heard people who had land or a house gave it to a contractor as 'antiparochi' meaning in exchange for 2-3 apartments in a new block that would be built on his land so big ugly and more modern looking apartment blocks were built to house this massive growth. Neo classical architecture was out of style by then.Athens was a village 1834 once it became the capital of modern Greece. Unfortunately many beautiful mansions were demolished, some due to progress, some due to the war or and others because of bad workmanship.I wish the Aktaion Hotel still existed.I would have loved to see this in person. That would have been one of the grandest buildings in Athens.

​@@passionatesingle Yes your comment is very accurate. spot on! Athens (and Greece in general) was very late to grow because of WW II and the civil war which followed and internal conflict. So there was a rush to cope with western standards for political reasons and the transition from an agricultural rural society to a modern western one was very rapid and overwhelming with little to no central planning. The phenomenon of "astiphilia" (αστυφιλία ---> αστυ=city + φιλία=to like) which caused 'antiparochi' destroyed wonderful buildings not only of neo-classical style but also modernist residences from the 20's and 30's.

Through the American Marshall plan most of Europe been rebuilt with dollars and industrial machinery, to boost Europe’s economy. @ Kimberly Perrotis Dear friend the only deadly earthquake that has been recorded during the early 1950's, was the one in the Ionian islands which were completely devastated and had many victims. Almost all villages were raised to the ground. That was in 1953, not 1954! As far as Athens is concerned, the only true "earthquake" was the one that happened in 1955! This "earthquake" was nothing more that a famous and wretched politician (Konstantinos Karamanlis) who at the time he was Prime Minister. At some point, being the mastermind of the fast industrialization of Greece and in order to "modernise" Greece and especially Athens, wanting to give a "european" character to the city, he demolished most of the neoclassical buildings that had existed since mid 19th century. In their place he built repulsive huge buildings of concrete, glass and metal. Monstrous architecture, as you can imagine! As a result, Athens lost its beauty. For example, the neoclassical buildings that remain around Plaka and Monastiraki are only a tiny fragment of what once existed! And of course as a city, since then, it has become a disgrace due to lack of urban planning. A sprawling city! Since ancient times, three beautiful rivers were flowing through the athenian plain : Ilisos, Heridanus and Keefisos. All three rivers were buried, in the context of modernization. They are all under rubble. Unfortunately, Athens, is the only city in Europe that is not a river capital. Each river had its own rich flora and fauna! Now it's all gone! All this destruction started in the 1950's.

Greece is a fascinating country, which has given the Free World so much. The ancient sites, and the scenery, are second to none. Greece also has great indigenous music, rebetika, which began to be recorded in the 1930s.

Modern Greece (formed in 1822) has nothing to do with the ancient Greeks and has never given anything to the world: Gutenbergs press, steam machine, telegraph, telephone, radio, TV, internet, nothing. And that "indigenous music" came from Turkey with the Greco-Turkish population exchange in 1923. Note that the exchange was based on religion, not on ethnicity, so many of the newcomers were not even ethnic Greeks. They were counted as such just because they adhered to the religion of greek orthodoxy. They brought that new music to Greece. And the musical instrument bouzouki comes from the turkish and arabic bozuk.

The fact that you decided to write Alexander’s name in a Slavic language instead of just Greek is disturbing. Please his name couldn’t be more Greek and he aimed to spread Greek or Hellenic civilisation, as we call it, especially the Greek language all over the world. He would have been offended. Also the people of North Macedonia do not have any historic or legal right to claim any part of Macedonian ancient history as they reached the region far later. They should focus on their own history and prospective instead of creating false judgments with no scientific evidence.

What maked anymosity btw Albanians and Greeks is that the Greek Orthodox Church did "banned and cursed " the albanian language because it wanted that all Albanians to assimilate in Greek language. As for Albanian christians many of them prefer Greeks to Turks, and Albanian muslims prefer Turks to Greeks but not all. Also Albanians are sad what happened to the expulsion of Cham Albanian muslims in WW2. So don't think that "all albanians" prefer Turks, that's not true. Greeks also prefer in majority Slavic-Serbs to Albanains, but i know also some Greeks that prefer Albanians. Peace bro

One fact that anyone should know. Asia Minor (today’s Turkey) was Greek homeland for thousands of years (it goes back even further than the Trojan war (the Trojans were also Greeks by the way)). The Turks invaded 1071 ad and assimilated the Greeks of Asia Minor by force to the Islamic and Turkic culture. Many today’s Turks are the descendants of these Asia Minor Greeks that got assimilated with force by the centuries.

@@GEOfocusChannel hey Paul, both your channels are great. Geography Now is more oriented to young people I feel and he has a staff of 4-5 others that do various segments. One thing he covers that you don't (unless I've missed it in other videos) are famous people and culture. Your approaches are very different and I don't think he would influence you at all, but if you I think it might and don't want to watch for that reason I understand.

Great work. Thank you. As Greek I would suggest the mention of the country "North Macedonia" as "a country that tries to steal the history of Macedonia although it is a small state with no more than 60 years of existence. Secondly, I would recommend the mention that Greece was the county that stood against Germans for 219 days, the highest duration of resistance in Second World War of all the countries by far (Norway was the second with 61 days).

219 days probably includes the fight against Italians... Germany occupied Greece in about three weeks. Germans took Crete about two weeks later; English and other allies were protecting the Greek Islands. We are not talking about the partisan war. Greece is a beautiful place, full of history and culture. Greek food is the best in the world.

Skopians(not macedonians) are connected with alexander the same way brazilians are connected with maradona

There is ONE Macedonia, if Slavic people want some of the greatness of Hellenism, I understand it. However, do not be ridiculous, you have no genetic, linguistic, cultural relationship with the ancient civilizations of the greater Mediterranean. You are Slavs, Bulgarians to be exact.

Outer Macedonia was Hellenized culturally as all Europe was either directly or indirectly. So there is a historically proven connection and a real Hellenide heritage.

It is the Greek government's fault for allowing name recognition as North Macedonia. Skpoje (Scupi) was not part of Ancient Macedonia; I have seen the AGT in Pella, and the one that Slavic People in Skopje have erected is bigger than the one in Macedonia (GR). I have friends who are from FYROM, and they all of a sudden became "Macedonian" although they speak no Greek. People along the border might have some Macedonian DNA, but FYROM people are Slavic people just like Serbs and Bulgarians - there is no shame at that, but trying to appropriate history and culture that they do not belong to is a incomprehensible; now their entire population are just like in a mass hallucination about being "Macedonian"... and they Speak Bulgarian, which now they call "Macedonian". Their Macedonian is just a dialect of Bulgarian; and it is easier for a Bulgarian and a Slavic "Macedonian" to understand one another than a Greek from the island understanding another Greek for the continent, if they speak their own dialect. So, NM people hate Bulgaria, although some NM people take Bulgarian passports because of EU privileges.

@@george_K91 I thought Skopje people are Bulgarians...? yes, Serbia ruled the place for some time; Serbs even had Skopje as their capital under Tsar Dusan or some other Tsar that ruled over the entire Peninsula in the Medieval times.

Hi, I am very satisfied that I found this chanel for learning about many countries. It seems that you are quite good and informed about your theme each time. Especially for Greece, because this is the only that I have seen . I've learned new information for my born place that really I 've not ever heard . When it comes to geography and providing elements for countries you're boss. Keep it up and take it off. I would like maybe videos for specific territories- places in countries characterizing for sth which you are going expose it to your presentation .

That's too funny. I was just learning about ancient Greece in my 8th grade world history class. It's really interesting. Now we're on ancient china. But I think it's really interesting how a lot of our geometry that we learned today comes from ancient greece. Thanks to people like Euklid.

@@kimberlyperrotis8962 my guess is he has germanic roots. You'd be surprised how many words germans kept in their greek form in comparison to other europeans that adopted the latin conversion of the greek word.

Don't go to Santorini, it's too expensive and an overrated island. I have been there and it ain't even they good, there are many other islands that are more beautiful. Crete has many landscapes, islands like Corfu, Lefkada etc have beautiful landscapes and beaches.

According to the "Agreement of Prespa", signed between Greece and North Macedonia in 2018, the modern citizens of the country are recognised as people of slavic origins and do not claim to have any type of connections to the ancient hellenic civilization that inhabited the northern parts of Greece. I know most people try to keep a neutral position, so as not to hurt any viewers, but the issue concerning the national identity of the country's population is officially resolved.

Not exacly. Greeks have kept their part of the deal while North Macedonians still label their country as The Macedonia and still protest on the streets to "claim back" numberous part of lands they never owned or had any relationship with.
