Greece is a beautiful country and I love it. This video where you are talking about rubbish on the beaches, actually it is unfortunate that Greece is not doing what some of the European countries do by using waste to produce energy. Landfills in Greece are causing judicial problems for the country. I do not know how politics are working there but Greece is part of the EU so perhaps something can be done with the help of for example: Denmark, Sweden or Germany to eliminate most of the rubbish and recycle what can be recycled to preserve the sea from waste and also the beautiful Greek nature

I see garbage along the highways even mattresses & appliances; during the pandemic domestic tourists trashed the beaches of the famous & beautiful Lake Tahoe in California and not only that but also National Parks. There are lazy and careless people unfortunatelly everywhere. Thanks for posting

I lived in vouliagmeni (south of athens )for a number of years and took it upon myself to clean and pick up trash from trails and mountain viewpoints - it would be frustrating and locals would actually yell at me not to do it because it’s not your job”- even illegal dumping of construction debris just tossed behind bushes- I notice it would be lower educated locals / foreigners that would dump things and not to think anything of it -

People classified as "lower educated" probably live in areas where trash discartment is not as efficient as it would be in an area with more "educated" people . Sometimes it's economic status and negligence...however no excuse and we should all play our part.

Hi Daniel, I have seen massive changes to attitudes with rubbish in Greece. When I lived there at a young age I remember people would just throw their rubbish outside their car windows or just drop the litter on the street - this was the norm in the late 1970’s-1990’s! So glad that Greece has changed so many of these attitudes and is a progressive and beautiful country. There is hope 🙏🏼 However one thing I have noticed more recently is that there are more and more shops ( especially the little local shops) using plastic bags again!! They are not the compostable bags/ paper bags you might get in the bigger super markets. Please can you investigate this issue resurfacing in some of the smaller village shops. Problem is they do get into the sea and cause problems for the marine life. I still see too much plastic/ bottles/ bags on the amazing beaches round the area you are filming. These things take time to change but really it is urgent to eliminate the use of plastic bags there. Thanks for your great videos 😊

Dude, I was like a couple hundred meters down the beach :). It was packed and scorching hot, we arrived at 9:30 and barely could find an umbrella and sunbeds... People were waiting even half an hour or 45 mins to get one after 11am. We left at 1pm because we couldn't stand the heat. We brought a BIG bag of goodies from KOSMOS (I think this place needs its own video) and we took our trash with us when we left just because we saw the bins overflowing. I mean the city can do a lot but we have to help as well... We have to be more conscious and not throw responsibility away. If you see the bloody bin full, don't throw your trash, KNOWING it'll end up on the floor. The city is 5 mins drive away and you can find many bins in there. It was a beautiful 2.5 days in Nafplio, despite the fact that it was super busy and quite hot. Greetings from (now) Athens.

Thank you for your honesty, once again, in showing the negatives along with the positives of Greece. My friends in Karpathos have the same complaint and write constantly to the Mayor, but … very little gets done to collect the garbage or keep bins clean. Writing from Geneva, Switzerland, where there is no comparison. The bins have liners and are kept quite proper and clean.

It is a big shame! Everyone has a responsibility to keep the country -roads, cities and beaches clean. The responsibility falls on the municipality, the residents and the tourists. Greece and the beaches are not someones garbage can. Respect the environment and the sea. The municipality can hire people to patrol the beaches who should be able to fine people-residents or tourists - for littering. Action has to be taken! This is not acceptable to do this to our beautiful country!

I go to the beach every day and I never take anything with me to consume or buy anything. So I do not produce any rubbish, either. One of the worst kind of rubbish are the thousands of cigarette butts that accumulate on the beaches during the summer. Nobody picks these up, before the first autumn storm sweeps them out to the sea to annoy the fish. Another thing. I am a naturalized citizen (not Greek) now for over 45 years. It is 38 years ago since I lived in the country I have the passport in. My experience is, that a person becomes a mix of all the places lived in. I will never feel purely one or the other, or the third. Now I have lived in Greece for 25 years which is the longest period in my life in one country. The balance of the mix has changed, but I will never be able to feel my self belonging to a certain nationality. I like the very clear Greek distinction, also on official documents, between ipikootita (nationality) and ethnikootita (ethnic belonging and meaning mostly where you are born). There is a big difference. Nationality is just a paper. And hopefully a practical one living in the EU.

Back in the 1980s and 1990s it was worse. I recall many times just strolling on the beach and see cigarette butts (gopes-γόπες) tucked in the sand as if it was an ashtray. We even joked to the ones that tucked their cigarettes in the sand by saying "it won't grow into a new cigarette buddy". Nevermind the tonnes of these resting at the bottom of the sea. Nowadays it got a tad better, yet as you witnessed the problem persists especially with the used plastic bottles. It is also disappointing to see an extensive amount of trash on roads/highways, even in remote areas, let alone heavy debris in illegal dump sites. PS: One of the reasons I rarely drive in Greece are the reckless drivers. In eparchia, oooh boy, you must be on constant alert every second the moment you take the roads even for a short drive.

In ancient Greece, they used to say 'cleanse means culture/civilization' Education starts from home, before school years. Its not only mayor's fault. What can he do if he has a schedule based on the numbers of his men to collect the garbage in some specific days of the week? From the other hand there is always some kind of people that just don't give a f... Throw their garbage on sand, their cigarettes...and bla bla bla. They should forbade the entrance to people of this kind and 'fix their ticket' with a tax fine. FIRST, Karathonas Beach is a BEAUTIFUL PRISTINE ENVIRONMENT... This is a localized problem at Karathona Beach.... its based on R-E-S-P-E-C-T.....as the song released by Otis Redding belted out !!! Karathona is not surrounded by watchful eyes, the local greeks that swim here do not live in this "hood"..... Nafplion and Tolo are 3-5 kilometers away...... therefore, the mentality of folks changes dramatically....lacking respect of the environment as the end result. A SOLUTION: {Daniel: Print out on cardstock A4 sheet paper similar to the following (IN GREEK)} "Sas Parakalo, ....Eav o kados Aporrimmatov eivai yematos, Metoferete ta skoupidia sto spiti sas..... .....euxaristoume para poli..... .....As agapisoume ti phisi!!!!! ELLYNAS MOUSIKOS ADELPHIA , NAFPLION THEN: staple above notice on two sides of each trash can. This just Might Work.....its worth a try. Cheers. Andreas of Atlanta (excuse my poor greek) The TRUTH of the above is implementing a little Common Sense......but Common Sense is not very "Common" any longer......anywhere...
