GREATSWORD BATTLE

Ойын-сауық

A greatsword melee duel between Arlon (black) with his grand falchion and me (red) with my executioner sword. I think I was done before this one started, but that's no credit leaving him - he usually beat me almost every single time.
The sport is called buhurt, or armored combat, where we fight as knights did during medieval tournaments in armor. This is different from HEMA and fencing, there's a different art to it. Not the same as a battle like, lets say England vs France in the medieval times, but like a tournament held instead in medieval times where people still wanted to go home afterwards.
Check my channel for TONS more of this and reviews, armor, workouts, etc. Remember to like and subscribe, many thanks!

Well, you've got moments like 0:40 where red hit black in the head. In the movies that would be a kill shot. But in this case it didn't even slow black down. So, is it because these weapons are dull? Or did medieval knights just not bother bashing each other in armor (since it seems to be nearly irrelevant compared to the wrestling)?

  • @georgiykireev9678

@@cra2cra226plate armour, combined with a large amount of padding, is enough to make most weapons really ineffective. You generally wouldn't even want to kill a knight, since capturing one alive could give you a LOT of ransom money, but if you had to, you'd do so by wrestling him to the ground and stabbing the gaps with a dagger. Full plate was prohibitively expensive for everyone but the very richest though, so encounters like these would be uncommon

Platemail basically made you a tank, and it was very difficult to deal with for any enemy who was not able to afford the correct weaponry or sufficient armor. Honestly, you could be completely mediocre but in plate and fight the best swordsman in the world who had no armor, and you'd probably win. Why? Because it's really fucking hard for them to actually hurt you seriously meaning, but it will only take a single decent strike to put them down, you can just intentionally bait hits and respond among other tactics. We automated warfare, as we did with everything, but actual live combat isn't something to idolize mate, it's a disgusting practice that only causes suffering to everyone involved. The enemy dies or is crippled and your own soldiers are permanently scarred. Why would you ever want to fight up close when you can minimize risk anyway? That's literally the same methodology behind plate, keeping the user as safe as possible and minimizing risks.

I am fairly sure that's a two handed falchion; but it's difficult to tell because often the only real difference between the two is the handle. This one seems to have a round leather grip with an actual pommel, a proper sword's handle; whereas a messer would have a wooden knife-like handle with a simple metal cap as a pommel. As for the blade, there is a considerable overlap between falchion blades and messer blades, so it's not so easy to tell the difference at first glance.

So Im fully aware that using swords is mostly for the sport and dont do much against the plate, but Im wondering, with swords this size or even bigger, how much blunt force do you feel when getting hit over the head and do you think you could get knocked out if unlucky enough? Awesome swords btw, both the executioner style pointless chopper, as well as the mean looking super-gross messer.

  • @GrantTheKnight

Yeah most swords you wouldn’t feel but these do well for blunt force. Mine hits harder than my axe does and I’ve made plenty of dents on others - same for him I have dents on my armor to prove it. When it hits, it hurts, and when it gets in between the armor, it hurts like hell.

I understand all that gear is cumbersome, but I didn't see any swings hard enough to do any significant damage. (Especially from the bigger guy) Even if thwacked right in the head, I don't think those swords have enough weight to cause concussive damage. Maybe disorient someone, but not knock them out.

Something I’ve been curious about is the armour you wear. It looks so much bulkier than the museum pieces I’ve seen and the recreations some other armoured fencers wear. Is that just because you guys are bulkier than them or is the aim here less to create exactly historically accurate recreations and more to ensure the wearer’s safety at all costs?

  • @wolfheardt4169

Our stuffs a little bulkier than some museum pieces and close to others. Often it’s 10-2.0 lbs heavier but we want to go home since the weapons are solid steel too (and that’s what differentiates us from others like HEMA is ours are solid thick steel).

I’ve noticed watching a lot of your videos that you tend to guard a little high. It works out for you most of the time bc you are noticeably physically stronger a lot of other guys and you can overhead through their guard and take a commanding control of the fight. But guys like this one who are a little closer to your strength but are really good at parrying will be able to get in really close on you a lot and destabilize your swing/sword and do some damage while you recover your position. Good show man!

Good fight! You should come visit Serbia, every year we have a huge knight combat tournament at the Manasija monastery, called Just Out Festival. Knights from all over the world attend. There's competitions for sword and shield, 2h axe, 2h sword, buckler and sword, 5v5 team combat. The knights participate in reenactments of historical battles as well.
