Yes it was. But the fords where noted for being a gutless wonder. The older ford police cars especially with the ford 460 cid had the camshaft retarted 6 degs. If the camshaft had been advanced 4 to 6 degrees it would have mad a huge difference.

As a retired police officer, (1967-2000) my favorites were the Ford Crown Vics which were designed as police vehicles. They handled very well at high speeds and ran forever. Our motors were always good for over 100k. The suspension was racing standards. Seats were very comfortable as well. We tried Chrysler vehicles and they were poorly made. They overheated if left running at an accident scene and the batteries died if left with lights on and engine off. The Pontiacs were not intended for police use as the bench seats could cripple an officer. I still suffer from back and neck injuries from Pontiacs.

@@jerry6711 1. The Crown Victorias had been around in police work for a long time and got better each year. 2. The department was attempting to use salesmen vehicles to save money. The seats were not adjustable enough so the back of the seats arrived with the seats leaning back. I was on the way to a baby choking assignment and as I went over a cross street at high speed, the car rose and then fell. My back suffered a downward jolt, injuring my spine. The police surgeon examined me and gave me five days off. When I returned after three days, a particularly nasty Sergeant investigated. He sat in the passenger seat and told me to drive the way i was going when i “supposedly” was injured. Afterward, he was in back pain and left me alone.

@@CTN-dj7frthe Charger is the only one left because it does exactly what officers want it to do. It also has the lowest overall operating costs of any of the North American squads from 2011 on up, particularly the V6 model, which is what led the CHP to dump Ford in late 2016. Those 580 squads allowed the Charger to tie the Exploder in sales. From then on, the big Dodge has edged the Ford aside for the #1 spot, while adding the Durango Pursuit, which means Dodge is going after Ford for the #1 make, in addition to model, in police sales. In 2020, the new Exploder appears, with similar performance to the Charger. Unfortunately, Ford has jacked up the bid pricing to well beyond the 4×4 Tahoe PPV's $34,000, compared to the $21,500 V6 / $23,500 V8-AWD Charger. The new Charger Pursuit appears in 2021, and a new Dodge Ram Pursuit in 2020.

The 1974 Ford Galaxie with the 460 interceptor had the camshaft 6 degrees retarted from the factory. Any time the camshaft is retarted it takes away from lowend and midrange power. If they took the camshaft and advanced it to 4 or 6 degrees advanced it would have been much more powerful car off the line and in the midrange and still gave it plenty of topend.out of all the police cares from the 1960s to say 1973 Dod , Plymouth dominated the area. The AMC matador was a very strong and very fast on car off the line and in the midrange after the Matador reached aprox 110 they started pushing they had no chance against the mopars when it came to top end.

The Crown Vic didnt "dominate" anything until 1997, after Chevy killed off its Caprice and Chrysler with its Diplomat and Fury. Ford never came close to matching Chrysler in police sales, though Chevy began to in the later 80's. Ford and Chevy never had a product that could match the performance of the 440 Mopars, nor could they match the bids. When Chrysler was left with just the 318 from 1981 to '89, the Chevy - which did perform better than the Ford - started capturing bids in certain areas. The k-frame problems that Chrysler experienced in '86 - '88 gave Chevy and to a lesser degree Ford something of an opening, which did occur. Instead of throwing a few bucks at its product, Lee Iaccoca decided to eliminate both that problem and a UAW in Kenosha looking for job security by shutting down production half way through the '89 model year, pissing off everyone but himself. He was gone within 3 years. Chevy perfected the Caprice up through '96, when GM pulled its usual stupid move and killed it off in lieu of more SUV's. From '97 through 2011, Ford then held the market, not by virtue of a superior product, but by default. When the LX Charger was replaced by the LD Charger in 2011, it had been improved sufficiently to take the lead from Ford, and the Panthers were laid to rest. By 2016, the AWD Charger Pursuit had matched the Exploder Interceptor in sales, and by 2019 the big Dodge was the only Pursuit-Rated police car available. The Exploder Interceptor for 2020 matches many of the Dodge's performance attributes, but cannot match the most important one: Affordability. The bid price difference works out to a 3 for the price of 2 situation, in favor of the Dodge. No police agency, even with a strong preference for the Ford, will be able to justify that kind of frivolity. A new LF Charger Pursuit appears in 2021, along with its retail stablemates.

"From '97 through 2011, Ford then held the market, not by virtue of a superior product, but by default." That's the whole point. It was the de-facto police car for that entire time. Nobody bought anything else unless they were supervisors (Tahoes, etc.) or stupid (Impalas). They built so damn many that you can get one for a song and dance today, drive it home, change the oil, and you've got a car that will last at least up to 300k. Only serious fault you'll get is a blown transmission, which is a big job but it's not like you're going to be paying BMW prices. They practically define the body style people think of when you talk about American cars. They starred during the golden years of Cops. They're still in use today across the country despite being 8 or more years old. I mean, a powertrain from 1991 compared to one from 2011? No shocker that Dodge finally got its act together and made a car worth buying. But you can't blow the Crown Victoria off as some kind of weird fluke just because it could have been outperformed. Fact is, it wasn't.

A little known (and probably not remembered police pursuit unit) was a 1965 Dodge Coronet 2-door used by the Fulton County Sheriff Dept. in Fulton County,GA. This car did exist according to my father who worked as a firefighter with the Atlanta F.D. as well as part-time at a Standard Oil service station in the mid-late 60's. The service station also operated a towing service which was on call if needed by Atlanta P.D.,Georgia State Police as well as Fulton County Sheriff Dept. Daddy would take the wrecker if called when he was working his shift and one occasion he still speaks of with both joy and admiration was when a teenage male tried to (and was succeeding) in outrunning Atlanta P.D. on a stretch of then un- finished I-20 West of Atlanta. Daddy was servicing a car when he and his boss (the station owner) heard their police scanner come alive with the action. Daddy saw a rather unusual car pull to the top of the on-ramp and wait. It was the white Dodge. This wasn't any white Dodge. It had been purchased by Fulton County from the late Cotton Owens who had built it for a back-up car for NASCAR Hall Of Fame member and champion David Pearson. It still had the full-house NASCAR Hemi & 4-speed,roll cage,10" wide steel wheels, straight exhaust pipes with no mufflers & one exiting under each door. The car wore full Fulton County Sheriff Dept. markings,a red "Mars" light on the top as well as round red lights mounted inside the rear window. The driver wore a Fulton Co. Motorcycle Officer helmet, driving gloves as well as a Simpson fire suit with Fulton Co. insignia. The police garage had put push bars on the front and a Motorola radio inside. Daddy said this day the kid in the Corvette passed by and the Dodge blasted down the ramp so fast it was blur. He caught the Corvette in less than a mile and smashed the rear bodywork to pieces. Daddy took the wrecker to get the car. He said he wished some pictures of the car still existed but he doubted it.

I think enough other commenters covered the Crown Victoria. Even the earlier LTD units should have been mentioned. The Dodge Diplomat was the staple of law enforcement mounts throughout the 1980s' second half, and was my mount my first few years on the job. Boxy, bold, and authoritative, it was easily recognized day or night. In fairness, the video title really doesn't say the video includes all iconic LE videos. Still, get a Crown Vic in there..!

  • @timsharpe3498

The older LTD Crown Vic's really don't deserve a mention because they were just awfully slow and sloppy. The Diplomat was a solid city cruiser but a white knuckle ride at high speeds. The 1989 to 1990 Caprice was the best overall police car I professionally maintained. Ford couldn't give Crown Vic's away to police agencies until GM phased out full sized RWD sedans.

The Crown Vic had a monopoly on the police car market for 20 years because they were the most reliable and durable car built by anybody over the past 20 years. The reason why GM phased out their RWD cop cars was because they couldn't build anything that was as reliable, neither could Dodge.

The new Dodge Chargers, especially tuned as Cop Car are probably the most intimidating cop cars around. Adding the fact that the Charger is practically a 4 door family car in a muscle/super car package, it's the pinnacle of Law Enforcement. The Ford Crown-Victoria's were super common, as it was such a reliable car, plus it had so much leg room that it was practically a boat, but the Charger 1-Uped it with an impressive performance upgrade.

If so great than why a 3 year run and not a 20 year run like the CVPI? Simple, a police car is useless if it spends too much time on the lift. Look at the Motor Trend KZread Caprice/Crown Vic police car shootout- the CVPI won rather decidedly and MT magazine is no fan of the Ford Motor Company.

A 3 year run because GM turned the factory over for SUV production in the quest for more money, and to serve their (foolish) corporate plan of no rear wheel drive/full frame cars. Your Motor Trend silliness was amusing but had no connection to reality. But hey, when you own a few, and have talked to more than a few cops old enough to have worked with both units (and the new Chargers) you get back to me. Until then you simply lack the necessary experience.

Derek, Sheriff's depts I have worked with cuss those Explorers up down and sideways...except when it snows. The Caprice handled better. It's something you can actually go out and test for yourself, though the 04 and up CV's are a LOT better than the first gens. Not sure how comfort could even be close; the Ford cop seats are horrid. The Chevy cop seats are merely really bad. The units that didn't get the center console space (or used the Impala or Marauder factory consoles and seats) are pretty much indistinguishable in ride comfort. All I hear about the new Chargers, after "Damn that thing's pretty quick!" is invariably "Where do I put all my shit in this little thing?!"
