Greater Anglia Barrier Fail and the DHL driver who couldn;t wait!
Фильм және анимация
The barriers have died so the lights flash and the siren sounds. The train did a full stop and the driver called the signalman on the trackside phone. He then was surprised when the DHL driver decided to go across on red, followed by the train!
There were at least three trains in both directions that had to stop, leave the cab and phone - then proceed slowly across with horn blasting. Most of the traffic was content to wait, apart from the DHL driver - he just went across just as the train started to move away. Gravel Pit Crossing is in Harbour Rd, oulton Broad - and just after the crossing joins the Norwich to Lowestoft line with next stop Lowestoft. This train has come from Ipswich.

Here in the United States the Federal Railroad Administration requires the conductor to put flares and physically flag the crossing. It’s cool seeing how the UK does things differently as I don’t see as many crossing failures like this.

In the UK, we have many types of crossing, and at some, such as an MCB-CCTV, MCB-OD or AHB, a train would not normally be allowed to pass over the crossing unless it had been flagged across if the barriers had failed to lower or were missing. This looks like an AOCL that has been retrofitted with barriers (making it an AOCL+B). These are crossings that would normally only have lights and are found on lightly used rural lines with lower speeds where they pass over quieter roads. Because of some misuse by motorists, most of them are being upgraded to have barriers as well, but these aren’t interlocked with the signalling, instead that little signal on the left hand side of the line just before the crossing will indicate to the driver if the road lights are flashing, the klaxon is sounding and the barriers are down. If that isn’t the case, as is here, and due to the rural nature of this type of crossing, the driver will contact the signaller and get their authority to pass the crossing. They must sound the horn as they pass the protecting signal, then continuously as they pass the crossing and must travel at a speed where they can stop before any obstruction (such as a car). The signaller is likely unaware that the level crossing has failed, as AOCL are not normally linked to the overall signalling systems, but will be now they have been informed by the driver, and a local signalling response team will be despatched (which is what I do for a living). The DHL driver has committed a road traffic offence by passing a flashing red road light.
Ok so here is my take on it. Crossing lights failed and the DHL driver at that point was clear to cross. The train is given the road (we did not see the green or proceed with caution) which the driver did. He continued to use horn as a warning so the train could proceed. Fault lies with Network rail..
When I heard the 2 long blasts of the horn, I was half expecting the driver to follow up with a short, then another long blast as in the US at crossings. Never mind, this was a good catch. A pity the DHL driver thought that the crossing lights didn't apply to him. I shall not be using that company for deliveries if they flout traffic laws.
Also the example of a hybrid train - could see the lowered pantograph and hear the diesel generator in the middle of the train ~ that faulty level crossing in a non electrified section ✅

It’s a bi mode train as the middle bit is the power pack as it’s running on diesel and the whole line is non electrified
@Martindyna

Electro-Diesel in old money, like the Class 73 although it may have been called that because until recently the Class 73 was far more powerful on 3rd rail, the Diesel engine was more of a ‘get you home’. That said the tractive effort was similar on Diesel until about 25-30 mph IIRC. Of course the Class 73/9 changed all that with similar power in either mode.

@@Westcountrynordic Do 755s operate on that route? I thought it was 745s and 720s down there. As far as I'm aware they primarily run routes out of Norwich and Ipswich. There's a few routes like Ipswich to Peterborough that run a couple stops on the electrified GEML but the vast majority of the routes aren't electrified.

Credit to the train driver how they handled that.
Had a few of those (retired GA driver) on of the times you need a guard who could stop the traffic. I would guess the driver also used the manual over ride button as well as calling the signalman.
Did you show this vids to DHL. It's like when I go over a pedestrian crossing before I've got to the other side. Cars have carried on like I wasn't, when their suppose to slow down & wait. But as soon as people have passed their driving test. The highway code goes out of the window!
The sound and the lights should be enough to stop.
@CoolSteve08
Ай бұрын
Assuming the lights were working. It's always possible the only thing working was the sound alert, if the barriers failed you can't guarantee something else didn't fail as well. But sure the sensible thing to do if you see a train stopped at a Level Crossing and the barriers aren't down is to stop and wait. But we also didn't see the DHL van approach, so it could have been the situation that the train had already been sitting there for 5-10 minutes & the DHL van came to a complete stop and waited briefly before checking that the train wasn't actually moving & proceeded through the crossing.
@CullenRick

@@CoolSteve08 It's not likely as the lights and alarm are on the same, original, circuit. The barrier pack is a bolt-on.

Many delivery companies come very close to either creating environments that distract from paying attention and taking care, to incentivising risk-taking behaviour - as much as some like to claim that safety is first, they'll get onto drivers if they're late or take too long to make deliveries, even if e.g. they get misrouted. See the complaints many people have about both how delivery drivers/riders drive, and how they make deliveries ("why'd you throw it in the bush?") - the companies need to be held accountable for the environment they create (though of course, not exclusive to deliveries).

Does anyone know what this procedure looks like on third rail sections? I imagine there's a very real chance of getting the train "gapped" over the non-electrified section having to push off from 0 mph right at the end of the conductor rail.
