lol at the people talking about the shark being harmless. You never assume that a great white who's taken an interest in you will leave you alone. Sharks are very curious animals, and their main form of investigation is to bite things.

That was a great video. The narration combined with the visual really conveyed the power of these creatures. Normally you might think that spear gun would be protection, but then you see that poke barely did anything - no blood even spilled! The other thing that was spooky was how aggressive the shark was becoming. It was testing the situation and w/o that poke it might have become even more assertive.

I had a like 4.5 inch long & small diameter .223/5.56 mm power head that weighs ounces as it s a aluminum alloy that goes on a 5 mm spear tip for stuff like that. I stopped diving years ago as I was disabled from repeated wound from Iraq/Afghanistan and older battle fields. I avoided using the power head as much as possible but kept it on me for emergencies for mainly pirates, great barracuda and sharks. We had a great hammer head named Harold the size of our 20 ft boat that frequented a very isolated lagoon every day at around 14:00 hrs and it never bothered us the 6 yrs I dove the area even though I saw it daily. The area was so super saturated with fish, lobsters and conch it could fill up in matter of minutes That was back in the early 90s in an isolated area of Panama. I also saw grouper as big as our boat that would sun themselves on top of the water in May or lie about a sunken oil tanker. Many of them I could not equal if I stretched my arms and fins out. I saw them eat large snapper like minnows often and if they got angry they would grunt which meant you needed to move or they would get mean as hell. Generally they would just follow you around to see what was up. I had a smaller one like 400-500 lbs push me against cave wall so it could get out and slim me completely then wait outside for me to follow me around for like an hour in shallow water. Several liked to be scratched and acted like a puppy so we put up with them. We also had a pod of giant manta rays the frequented the oil tanker very large ones from like 15 to 20+ ft discs in size very beautiful creatures.

It does take a lot of bravery to be down in the water with them though. Because Anytime Shark's could come out of nowhere to attack you. At least he has protection carrying the spear gun. Predators in general (including sharks) will not attack something if there is a high likely hood of the predator getting hurt in the process. This is common knowledge. When you poke an inquistive shark with your gun you are letting it know that you are not to be messed with, realistically this is a bluff because if it really wants you, you are screwed, it after all is the apex predator. If you think about it, what is the shark thinking, being inquisitive and all. Its first instinct says "is this food?"

Yeah, but the main reason is because humans dont look like the common prey, example, lions know that a buffalo can hurt thems, but they still attack buffalos cause they are they tipical prey, when a lion see a human they dont attack instantly because we dont look like there tipical prey, they start being curious and also afraid because we dont look like the animals they used to seeing.

For all who are afraid of sharks. This is what you do when a shark is too close for your comfort. 1. Remain calm 2. If you are uncomfortable when your in the water with a shark, swim away fastly and calmly. 3. Do NOT under any circumstance take your eyes off the shark. 4. If it goes for a bite, punch it the eyes, nose, or gills. 5. Most importantly, dont try to kill it upon sight. If you do that, one of you is going to be the winner of the fight, and it wont be you.

I think it's funny how much people underestimate sharks. That GW could have killed him in an instant, at any time, and there would have been nothing he could do about it. No matter how experienced a diver or swimmer a person is the fact is that humans are out of their element in the water. The difference between dangerous land animals and sea creatures is that on land humans MIGHT have a chance of fighting off a attacker with rudimentary weapons. In the water the spear gun might as well have been a paintball gun. Humans have NO chance of out fighting a shark in the water. only chance to avoid missing a chunk is raising the sharks bet and hope to fuck he doesn't call

I love sharks and all other fish. I respect them. However, I was raised in a fishing family. I love fishing as well. It might sound strange that I love fish as well and I love catching them at the same time, but if I ever happen to kill one, I only kill it if I will eat it. Even then, I do it in the most humane way possible. To kill something, you must have respect for it. In this guy's situation if I were to run into a Great White, I would have done the exact same thing. I would have poked the shark simply for my own safety, but try to avoid hurting it. This guy did just that. I challenge you to jump in the water with an animal that can kill you if it really wants to and not attempt to defend yourself. Unless you have no brains or sense of safety then you would do the same. I don't think of sharks is mindless killers are always out to get you. That's just stupid. But they are animals of incredible power, and I will always protect myself if I feel threatened, just as they would.

Vandiminion Farnese It is a process when the shark is challenging him. The shark compare his height with it's own by diving next to him, checks his heartbeat and the human may result for the shark as a PREDATOR or PREY. This guy was lucky becuase his skin is covered with suit and i think this is his advantage. Because a very hungry great white shark can't refuse a meal when it smells human skin. In a few words, in the moment when he noticed it, if he would swim away erraticly and terrified by fear, i think 90% he would be attacked.

Holy Shit Eugene! You had the sense to stand up to the big fella. Most ordinary people would panic and swim away and that exactly what the white was looking for. But I tell you what mate I would not have wanted to stay any longer in the water as the white might have said ah bugger it I'll bite him anyway. We have some BIG BASTARDS in Australia. Keep safe Mate. If you come across any more please film it, and always watch your back when in the water mate those Combi Wagons are out there.

Glad to see that someone else dives alone. I've been free diving for about 15 years consistently and I always catch flac from people about being alone in the water. I feel it is safer to dive with a partner but sometimes i fee; like i have a better connection and awareness of the environment when I'm by myself and i also feel like i find more fish. Just a thought.

Cant believe the negative shit people are saying. Its like they watched shark week on discovery channel and now they know everything about sharks. I'd like to point out that if he wasn't watching the shark it probably would have taken a test bite, and to a creature of that size, a test bite to him is a missing leg to the diver. And jabbing the shark with the spear if it comes to close is recommended by various dive associations and government bodies that overlook diving and other recreational water sports, sometimes its even recommended to bring some sort of spear with you if your in waters with the potential of shark encounters even if your not spearfishing. Seriously amazing how idiotic some people are *cough* ***** *cough* *****

clearly ignorance abounds. This shark does appear more curious than aggressive, that being said answer this, 'how does a shark satisfy it's curiosity?'. Answer, with it's mouth of course. I just came off a dive with some small bull sharks. Yes, I was spearfishing. No, I didn't stop, or freak out and get off the water. Did the sharks show interest? Yes, but they never appeared aggressive and they maintained at least 15ft of distance between me and them. If a shark approaches close enough you can "poke" it, then it's more than just curious and I have no problem with a diver defending himself by poking the shark. If a shark that size decides that he is curious enough to find out if you are good to eat it may casually cruise in and take an exploratory bite. This of course is no consolation to you as it has probably taken your leg and you are a long way away from proper medical treatment.

Jason Thompson The point isn't about who was the "macho man" and didn't get scared; the point is that this shark was investigating the man which makes it a threat. The diver has every right to be alarmed that an unpredictably dangerous wild animal is trying to examine him. Animals' only goals in life are to feed and reproduce. He can't reproduce with the diver so his interest in the diver must be the latter.

eragon2121 Jon Bob is correct, we invade the sealifes homes. And take food from their habitat. When people say the waters are "shark infested" they are wrong. We are the ones infesting their home which makes them the owners of the sea not us.

Nice one boet!.....I did a lot of spearfishing off Cape Point and Rooikrans area. My biggest shark was a white off of Oudekraal on the Atlantic side.....didn't expect to see one there. This one came underneath me and nosed my bag of fish before I saw it. It looked like a big limousine cruising around slowly.....Pec fins stayed up so I was not too concerned and a seal arrived at the same time who also showed no signs of concern. Made it to a rock and hung out till it looked like it had gone.
