Great Miami Tornado of May 1997 Part-1
Ғылым және технология
This is local Media Coverage of the Great Miami Tornado of May 12th 1997. Although this tornado was only an EF-1, it was very large and quite photogenic as it tore through the streets of Downtown Miami and across the Venetian Causeway. As you watch this you can listen to some of the eyewitness reports from both the public and the local media and you will truly see why they call Miami, The Banana-Boat-Republic. "Looks like we're not in Kansas anymore Chico"

I remember this. I was in the 2nd or 3rd grade at the time. My dad had come to pick me and my little brother up (they were evacuating our school because our elementary school was ground level with open hallways- no protection), and I just remember walking outside and looking up and just seeing this massive monstrosity. We lived closer to the city, so while the tornado was still miles away, it was close enough for me to see how terrifying it looked. There was this part that I'll never forget- near the top of it, at the clouds, there seemed to be this grey rectangular shape that remained still, and I just kept my eyes fixated on it because I didn't know what it was. My dad rushed us into his car, and the first thing I did was start crying about my cousin and my mum getting picked up. My dad went to our home and picked my mum up, while my uncle (RIP, lost to COVID) drove his family away. We drove north. That was the first tornado I had ever witnessed, and it was scarier than any hurricane I lived through while living in Miami.

Same here. I was in 5th grade when this happened. We couldn't see it from Deerfield Beach where I lived but I remember seeing it played over and over on TV and remember the constant tornado warnings all over the place even as far north as Royal Palm. Scary.
What a historic event for Miami! This storm is unfortunately my greatest miss as a chaser... From 1:25 - 2:46 in this clip I was at work, only 1/4 mile to the southeast of the funnel (right about at the spot in the lower right corner of the footage), but looking towards the southeast... had I just been looking in the opposite direction I would have had a front-row seat to this incredible event.
Damn Daddy doesn't understand
I still have my copy of this tornado featured in the Sacramento Bee. My sister moved there two years prior and tried to tell me "oh no they don't get tornadoes here. That's up in tornado Alley." She quickly found out she was wrong. They lost a tree and her children's entire swing set got relocated to somebody else's yard.

There are lots of waterspouts just offshore in Florida, but there are also a lot of tornadoes. Many of them are from tropical systems, as you said, and the majority of them are rather weak and short-lived.
I have lived in Miami since 1983...never even heard of this. My mom worked downtown from the 80s till now yet again never heard a word of this.

It looked like a fine day but when i saw that funnel i looked at the sky but i dont understand it doesnt look that stormy
classic looking tornado, unusual for us here in Florida--although I saw one right offshore here in Jupoiter, Fl that was similar, pretty awesome sight
By no means was this tornado tiny. It may have only been an EF-1 but it was quite large in size. A good deal of the tornadoes that occur in Tornado Alley can be rather small. It's just that when a large and destructive tornado wipes out a town like Moore, Joplin or Greensburg they tend to get a lot of media attention, just like this one did when it formed over Little Miami-Havana back in 1997.
7:48 "freight train force winds". What does that even mean? Freight trains move at different speeds and generally don't go that fast.
@moviemagg
6 жыл бұрын
When people talk about a freight train in relation to a tornado, they are referring to the winds the tornado produce's sounding like a freight train. It has nothing to do with the wind speed of the storm. It had to do with the sound. Some tornados do indeed sound like a freight train. The news reporter who says "with freight train force winds" at about 7:48 is Miss Dumb-Ass herself, Belkys Neray from WSVN Channel 7, the Fox station in Miami. No Brains!!!

What's even scarier is some of the tiniest tornadoes do the most damage. It's not the size of the thing as much as it is the wind gusts from it. There have been towns wiped out from tiny tornadoes. That's a big misconception. It is sooo scary, I agree!!

Not strange or uncommon at all. The state of Florida ranks number 3 in the number of Tornadoes that occur nationwide each year. South Florida can get Tornadoes anytime during the Months of March, April, May or June.
@afh7689
9 жыл бұрын
+moviemagg Tornadoes in Florida are associated with summer thunderstorms (weak EF0 tornadoes) and squall lines along passing fronts during the winter (when strongest ones can occur, but most are still EF0). April & May are the driest months. Practically no fronts (at least none with squall lines) pass through during these months and the rainy season (with its thunderstorms) doesn't begin until early/mid-June. So yes, it IS a very strange time of year!
@moviemagg
9 жыл бұрын
afh7689 The South Florida rainy season normally begins during the middle of May. So May can be a rather wet month. Tornadoes don't need a squall line to form. There are many factors which could occur to cause the formation of a Tornado in South Florida such a disturbance or low pressure passing over the local area. The worst Tornado in Miami history occurred in the first week of April in 1925 and killed several people in the Hialeah area. Another historical tornado ripped across central Florida in April of 1966 and killed several people as well. So EF1s and 2s do happen more often then you may think and April and May can and does produce quite a number of tornadoes.

***** He does. He had a plan for this person to create and experiment technology to study weather and alert civilians.

Why? Would it really have mattered? We're all going to return to dust eventually and the entire existence of the human race will be forgotten. Nothing matters.

Well, if you take a look at it, Miami’s not a well-prepared city for a tornado. They are very prepared for a hurricane, but not a tornado. Tornadoes rarely hit, and why would you want someone to die in the first place? At my school if you say “I want someone to die” or “I’m going to kill you”, you’ll be sent to a counselor, and maybe a mental hospital. Most of the time, the kids return to school.
Natural power reminds me that humans are nothing compared to God.

This was an F1. Florida doesn't have a lot of tornados. On May 12, 1997 this happened. It was scary. I was there. I was 22. I was at work when I saw it coming down a few blocks away. My boss said "Everyone to the basement now!" It was scary. Thank god nobody was killed. I walked away with a broken arm froma. wood plank flying through the hallway as I was running to the elevator
I was there that day i live in coral gables Miami next to 8 st and the wind and some heavy rain past over my appt before it became a tornado i was almost out to work and have to wait for the rain and wind to past when I was able to get out to go to work and look East see the black cloud cover over 8st in the little Havana area Wich i wonder what it was all that bad wether that past over my appt... minutes later at work i was informe at work about the tornado ....this was my first experience whit weather like this in Miami
I have seen worse tornado's when I fart.

Yes, water tables as low as 6 feet occur in some areas in Florida at certain times of the year. I think the bigger problem is the porous soil (basically sand). The result is that when a hard rain comes (extremely common in Florida), you have a rapid flow of water through the soil. So yes, no basements in Florida. In fact, many houses are raised about a foot off the ground to further prevent water incursion.
Nice compilation.
and this is why in 2021 you can still get a newly built 3000 square ft home in Florida with a pool for $350,000
Nice thank for sharing it..
I was there in 1997! I was crossing the Venetian Causeway that afternoon when it formed over Biscayne Bay and crossed in front of me. :(

Looked a lot like a wall cloud lowering just behind where funnel cloud is trying to form a tornado.
I was working in Downtown Miami when this tornado hit.
Perhaps Brayn Norcross was referring to gusts as opposed to sustained winds-- I don't know. I was in Broward County, where the wind and rain were more like Tropical Storm force/Cat 1 gusts, and I could only go by what was on the news. A compact counter-clockwise cyclone making landfall near Homestead is going to have its NE quadrant still over water near the Beach, and a lot of wind-related damage and waterlogging still can take place (and did). I saw it when I returned.
How the hell do you get "earthquake" out of this video?
Belkys still works for WSVN after all these years! Amazing!
