It's a shame yes. But people running a guerilla war of liberation could ill afford to leave large buildings available around the countryside as makeshift garrisons for an army of superior numbers and resources. That was the sad truth of it in most cases. They had to go.

They were noted for their generosity and sold champion horses just to fund grain for them during the "famine". The burnings were nothing but blind reactionary destruction. Had they waited it out, many landlords would've sold up or opened up (e.g. Westport House).
