Great Gray Owl Nest 1 of older owlets leaves nest 5-28-2017

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

one of the older owlets goes exploring around the back of the nest tree then ends up on the ground and is exploring there now - not all fledges are planned this is normal for owls but it will be just fine parents will continue taking care and instinct will kick in for owlet and it will try to get higher up as the day progresses

I like how the smallest Owlet notices and stares at the exit door then at his sibling as if do say "did you see that". then everyone looking down in amazement...too cute!

For those worried about the fledging owlets, they’ll be fine. I’ve never seen an owlet fledge, but from watching a lot of smaller birds I’m pretty certain that it flapped its wings on the way down. It’s not strong enough to fly level yet, but more than strong enough to slow its fall. As pilots used to say, any landing you walk away from is a good landing.

I was so amazed to see the little owlet squeeze through that tree. :o I also assume that it flapped its wings to landing and would be just fine. I was very surprised to read your reply to Carol regarding the brooding and feeding from the parents to the little owlets. Mom leaves it up to dad :o Dad's are always great (moms are too) with their young. I have been watching Eagles for six years now it is so beautiful to watch the parents be so loving, caring & tender with their eaglets and so very proud to watch their little ones fledge the nest.

I remember watching this live. One then gets stuck in the opening on the right hand side, one falls down the front, ranger puts him back in the best with a long ladder and he jumps out again!💕

I just had a small grey owl on my deck, looked to be a fledge, was making a sputtering/spitting noise and then flew off into the night @ 10 p before I could get my camera.

How is it known that the parents will still care for it on the ground and it won't just be eaten or something?

  • @polo7422

HI Kat, well that is the owl way of doing things - the owlets fledge from the nest then learn how to fly and hunt and while they are learning the parents provide some food for them as well as protection until the fall usually then the fledglings are on their own and parents don't provide for them and push them out of their territory to find their place in the world -- also the instinct to get high up off the ground is in the owlets so they will try and get up by climbing using beak and talons then as they learn to use wings they will fly up

Did another one split the scene to groove on some new action? I'm only seeing two owlets this evening. I know the one bigger one of the remaining three was checking out the rear hatch not long ago.

they are coming and going out the back door so hard to say if another one is totally on the ground or just out the back in the right side of the nest tree out of camera view -- I have not heard another go to the ground as of 6:51pm MDT (nest time)

I hope so. Since the nest is so high up in the tree stump, there's no way it could get back. I also just noticed that the cam is down again. Sorry, I'm not always a downer... I just got hooked on these owls and I don't know why.

no matter where the Owlets are in the nest or on the ground up in other trees other than nest area Parents still provide food for them. Once the owlets fledge from the nest the Parents still take care of them for many months -- they just don't come back to the nest -- The parents supply food and protection -- When fall comes around that is when the parents start to stop providing for the young and they are on their own

I think, eldest Owlet leaving patern of Nest is accidental. At night, Fox or snake will come and take it away. Timely leaving nest of bird always can fly from tree to tree following their parents. This owlet might be falling down within the crack open of that tree by accidental and at last fall down to the grown. The fallen owlet if not taken by fox or any other roaming carnivores, will be losed by her parent anyhow. Sorry for that. If a men near there, it will be good to carry and put it back on the nest.

  • @polo7422

yes when this happened the ORI representatives placed it back into the nest snag -- however it did fledge again quickly so it was ready to go even though viewers didn't think so .... And Owl parents know where their fledglings are once they leave the nest and feed them -- Fledglings have a natural instinct to get higher off the ground and find a place that is up higher either by climbing up or taking short flight to get there
