Regarding the WA rhododendron question: our neighbor cut their 30+ year old rhododendron almost to the ground and after about five years it’s right back up to where it was. I limbed mine up to a tree form last year after flowering and it is stunning this year. I need to open up the canopy some more this year. I’d never done anything like this before so I stopped after taking off probably 25% and crossed my fingers.

I appreciate your insight into fertilizer! Last year I pushed my roses too much, and they suffered from lots of aphid and worm/sawfly damage. This year, I gave a slow release fertilizer early in the spring when I pruned them, and nothing since. They haven’t put on quite as much growth, but they’ve had zero insect pressure, which is a trade I’ll take! So, thank you for explaining how too much pushing can cause a host of issues.

Oh oh, I “ limbed “ up my seven sons temple of bloom shrub ( very small shrub ) thinking that if I did that that it may save some energy to produce more height on it and develop stronger roots can I glue what I pruned off back on ? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I bought the shrub smaller with the intention of growing it into a small tree form. I thought by trimming it up and not growing foliage on the branches that I was just going to trim off anyway it might send more growing power to what was left. Guess I thought wrong 🥺 lesson learned. 💐💚🙃 It’s still a VERY bushy shrub at this point. 💐💚🙃

Question: a few weeks ago, you showed your acanthus mollis in bloom. I bought one (‘Whitewater’ variety) but am now concerned about planting in my 7a/b Maryland garden. I read they can be quite aggressive with roots shooting up “babies” all over. Are you concerned? Should I be concerned?

Sow/Pill bugs were disturbing the roots on my newly planted distress sale Butterfly bush. Sprinkled with Sluggo.

Hi Jim and Stephany...I think I killed one of my favorite trees by cutting very low limbs off...its a hornbeam and suddenly all the leaves are crispy brown..Zone 8a Cary, NC...it has only been 2 weeks since pruning that it happened 😢

Very informative as usual. I especially liked the coverage of the mycoryzeal bacteria - because no body covers it. Only my Master gardener instructors gave me the lowdown on it and you. Also you’re mentioning the growers mix. I’ve always wondered at my inability to grow some things from seed or cutting s and realize the growing medium may matter. Many things will sprout but it is hard to get them to full growth.

Question: I planted an azalea a little "high" as you've recommended for clay soil, and amended the native soil 50-50 with soil conditioner to fill in around the 3-gallon root ball, mounding up to the base of the plant and packing it gently all around. But when I watered it in, the soft soil immediately washed away from the root ball, leaving about two inches exposed! I mounded the now muddy soil up again, and replaced the mulch I previously raked away. Will the azalea be okay, or should I take it out and try again? Thanks so much!! I'm in zone 7b, Richmond VA area.

My MOST prevalent weed this year BY FAR is catch weed or bedstraw again I’m very rural surrounded on three side by farm fields and we have approximately three acres to TRY and keep up with. I am / we are losing the battle. I cringe when people plant grasses in their beautiful gardens because I have grasses everywhere that I’m trying to battle. Hi Jim, maybe you can help with this question: I’m in New Orleans, LA and planted a Southern Magnolia that we got for free as part of a city-wide tree giveaway. We had just purchased our house and there was nothing but grass. When we dug down to plant it, we found we had clay soil and there were also a ton of white shells mixed in. It was hard to dig but we got it in the ground. The magnolia has been planted now for 3 years, has definitely grown taller with a thick sturdy trunk, and lots of leaves. However, it has never once flowered, and the leaves are not that dark, dark green you expect. The nursery person here suggested I fertilize because I never had. So I did, this Spring. Alas, leaves are still a “regular medium green” color unlike the magnolias I see all over New Orleans. What do you think could be happening? (This tree was put in before I found your channel so I’m not sure I planted it right. Also, the rest of the things I have planted are thriving, thanks to you! Love this channel!)

Should be OK once it's mature, but make sure it's got enough water those first few years while it's getting established.

Question: Neighbor across the street has a plum tree with gall. I have a row of 1 Kwanzaa & 6 Yoschino cherry trees. Literally right across the street. The house is a rental so I would probably have to speak with the investment company. Do I need to worry about the gall spreading to my cherries? What can I do?

I have Praying Hands Hosta in the ground and is spreading quite fast. When should I divide it? My other question about hostas, what do you think about growing them in grower bags and bury the grower bag in the ground in order to avoid the rapid spreading and having to divide them. I love hostas, I would like more varieties but I am worried about the maintenance. I am in Raleigh NC.

My Serviceberry tree in the front garden has a problem that mimics your front garden's Serviceberry. An old failing Maple was removed, the stump ground up and the Serviceberry was installed by a local garden center about 6 months later. It is healthy, flowering, fruiting, and growing well. But it leans, and with each passing year more so. It is not staked, nor has it ever been. Do you think I should stake it? Should I have the garden center or my landscaper dig around the root ball and correct this lean by backfilling with soil or stone? I would like to address this issue before the tree gets any older and taller. Zone 7a/b in Northern Virginia. I very much appreciate all of the advice and knowledge you share in an informal and relatable way in your videos. PNW 8b. I have a “Goldflame” honeysuckle (purchased as 1 gal four years ago) planted in part sun. It blooms well, but is bare on the bottom four feet. What can I do to push new growth from the base/roots?

Jim, I planted a limelight hydrangea,sunshine ligustrums and gardenias under two large longleaf pines about two years ago. They’re get plenty of light and are irrigated 3 to 4 times per week. In many cases, especially if it's an already established bed, neither one! :) With cardboard, remember that you're creating a barrier, and that's going to slow down the ability of nutrients to get down deeper into your soil. Tilling is good if you want to work some organic material down into the soil when you're first starting a bed, but 'tilling is killing' - you can also disrupt the microbial life that's already down there and end up killing it.

I’m in 9b Southern California (Sunset zone 18). On your recommendation I bought some Soft Caress Mahonia to plant in the shade on the north side of my house. The foliage on top looks great but it’s bare on the bottom. Is this normal? Not enough sun? Too much or too little water?

Question: I’m in west central gulf coast of Florida. Zone 9B. I have a black knight butterfly bush that grows great in spring after hard winter prune, but the flowers fade and turn brown, and I never see any new growth, does it need another hard prune? Or am I impatient and should just leave it be?

Celtic pride Siberian cypress- any knowledge on these? I’m in zone 6 north New Jersey and have about 8 of these on a slope by my house, I planted a couple years ago. This year most greened out but 3 are dying. Is there anything that can affect these or is it just random? I would like to replace them with the same but not sure if there is a disease they can get or not.

I have both Minerva and Aphrodite that are listed as sterile/near sterile. In nearly 10 years, I have only seen 2 seedlings under the Minerva that were easily plucked out.

Hi Jim! Serious question but a homeless cat keeps pooping on my mexican feather grass after hydrating at my container pond (bowl of water). Do you have any advice to deter it? Also, do you have any interest in adding ponds or small container ponds to your landscape? For the wildlife benefit and visual aesthetic.

Foul smelling rain barrels. The first couple of fills in the spring smell particularly bad (assume detritus from birds, etc. accumulating and feeding bacteria). Are there any concerns for use in hydrating the gardens?

I have a question for you.... I had five Lelands planted by the last owner in a very small space so they were too close together. I'm in the Charleston area and have found out that we ended up with the Leland blight which has affected so many plants. All five died from bottom to top at varying rates - so fast I couldn't believe it. I had them cut down this week but left the stumps because I read we are supposed to do something with them to get rid of the fungus in the soil. Any help as to what I do next? (These were not the first plants to die in this space we hear?) I'm in Zone 9. Clay soil.

New sub here, really appreciating the smart videos. My question: I live in the DC area, zone 7b, which is great because we have so many beautiful options for plants to grow. But I’m in a part of Maryland where the soil is all clay. Im becoming really disheartened about it, my plants are really struggling. I amend the soil as I plant with conditioner, but I can’t help but feel like I’m just creating the “clay pot” issue. Is there a bigger kind of treatment I can do to help these beds? What about news beds - what should I do before I plant?

You’re at the right channel! Many of the videos talk about helping soil. Since this is such a focus of Hortube, I’d try watching prior videos, especially the ones just earlier this season with thumbnails of him reshaping the garden with new planting areas. He talks about that.

Do you still have them and am I seeing them in this video at the 18 minute mark behind you to your right? This is a silly QUESTION : since your pro compost, BUT because I can’t compost my whole garden actually non of it, can I cut back my daffodil foliage early if I throw a handful of organic fertilizer on it ? And your thinking she can buy fertilizer but not compost ? 🤣💐💚🙃 To my knowledge I have no idea where to buy bulk compost in my area and bag compost is expensive AND at 70 years old with major back problems I can’t shovel / fork a lot of anything anymore. No! Fertilizer on bulbs during dormancy can cause bulb rot. They must have time to recharge for next year and they use their foliage for that.

Fertilizer and the foliage do two different things. Fertilizer provides nutrients (primarily nitrogen that plants need to build proteins) while leaves photosynthesize. Photosynthesis fixes carbon from carbon dioxide into sugars for fuel (and then cellulose, lignin, etc). The nitrogen from fertilizer or compost helps the plants build enzymes that do this photosynthesis.

We have an ongoing problem with rabbits and voles. I am in Raleigh NC. Do you have any recommendations for managing this problem? We have tried trapping rabbits, but them cannot move them, legally. Tried weekly putting out various vole and rabbit repellant, and that has not worked. (I must Garden with Chile peppers granules, rabbit repellent...) have put chicken wire cloches around my plants, but that's so ugly! Put vole baskets under my tulips and they actually came up this year. The rabbits eat the base of my hollies up about a foot, ate my azaleas, hostas, tiger lillies,Asian lillies, coneflower, red hot pokers, achillias/yarrow, erigium, begonias, etc etc. The voles are eating the roots of many plants and a few small trees including the firepower nandinas, Chinese fringe tree, small cherry yoshino, Japanese maple, geraniums, and our grass centipede. We need help!! We don't have much money and I am feeling like we are just throwing it away to feed the critters. I don't use any poisons in the garden, for bugs or otherwise so we have a lot of bug eaters including opossum and chickens. ( yes, we have 6 chickens, nice gardens and love it!) On the verge of putting out poison for the rabbits and voles though.

Have you tried Liquid Fence? It isn’t a poison, but has been effective for me in repelling rabbits and deer from our beds. It is a spray and organic. Smells awful until it dries. When it’s dry we humans don’t smell it. Best of luck.
