Grays' Live Stream: An Homage to Nikon F4
Ғылым және технология
With industrial design by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the #NikonF4 was the first professional Nikon to feature a practical autofocus system. The F4 succeeded the F3, a manual focus camera introduced in 1980 but outlasted the F4 as it stayed in production until 2001.

The F4 was my bread and butter for several years. Lugging it around football fields and NASCAR tracks, with a 300 or 400 mounted on it was always a good time.
I still have the camera and used it during my early college years as I was studying photography and film. A camera that I adore and can never let go.
Definitely my favorite body of all time. Had the F4s for 15 yrs.
I had an F4s from 1988 - 2001 & loved it! It was stolen in the media room at the Mtl jazz festival. I had it replaced with 2 F100s.. They were OK. Then switched to Digital D1x, D200, D300, D700 - D800. I just saw a Cameras of yesteryear on the F4s & realized how much I missed it. I looked into getting one. I got one from Japan for $100 delivered. It was brand new. I’m so happy! It is forcing me to think again!!!

That is the advantage of being the lest popular of the F pro bodies i buy f4 for parts such as new non breeding viewfinder, clean back and to turn it into a standard F4 form a heavy F4e 😀

What a bargain!
Another great show, thank you.
I had and used F2`s and F3 . was never tempted by the F4 . But if Nikon in 1988 had paid Becky and Kon to do a tv advert for it I would`ve bought one for sure . Gray is so lucky to have you two . Great show again Thank you so much .
I love my F4, just acquired the sales brochures for the camera to add to my F4 collection. Good stuff, thank you. Cheers!
The real issue comparing the F4 to the early Canon EOS cameras was that most pros were using the Nikon and owned tons of glass while Canon was a very small part of the pro market, mostly amateur photographers. So, a lot of pro Canon users started buying into the EOS as a better autofocus method than the screw drive Nikons. Also, Canon really made this the only way forward by dumping the FD mount. There was no other way forward. Nikon fully supported all their lenses with the new bodies so there was no great pressure to change quickly. Within 10 years, Canon had captured the sports/action part of the market because of the speed of the autofocus. Nikon didn't start to pull away from the screw drive until the G lenses. By then, many pros were already committed to EOS. Nikon has trailed in the market ever since in terms of users. I became a Nikon user because of this ability to use all the glass, manual or auto focus. In terms of speed in focus the last of the Nikon pro bodies (D5, 500, 850) are very good and every bit as good as any Canon. So, I have seen no reason to invest in Canon.

The Nikon F4 was the best manual focus camera ever made. At least that was the joke going around at the time.
This is a very nice talk about a camera thank you very much for this.
I have f4s with the infamous ldc bleed.. but still working amazingly, bought from old photographer with the 80-200 , 28-85 , sb24 and catalogue of lenses from that era and 2 video tapes for how to , for sb24 and the camera itself , so very lucky 🍀.. love the feeling and sound of this camera 📷..cheers excellent show !!
Putting cabbage into this delicious conversation about old cameras has left me emotionally hungry 😁
My dream camera back in my film days. I still have that F4 brochure
Great show again guys! Thanks. I used to own a Canon T90 & got so annoyed when Canon abandoned the FD mount. I switched to Nikon. Ooh I nearly forgot CABBAGE!
Love the stream and cabbage
My F4 is still a valuable piece of my kit. Film lives!
The F4 is a monster, especially with an 80-200/2.8 ED AF-S and hood. ;) When i want to travel light, i just use my F80, and when i need a F2.8 zoom, i go with my F100, which is suitable for 99% of my needs. When i have a unsafe location, or bad weather, i just grab the F60. Simple as that.
Loved my F4 when I had one ☝️
I still have my F4s + F5 and my FA with MD 11 motor wind.
I STILL HAVE AN F3 AND HAD AN FA WHICH WAS AMAZING!!!
Loved your show guys, Whoooops ! I almost forgot to mention the cabbage🤔
At about 30 minutes in, Kon mentioned the the later Leica R cameras that could shoot film and digital. I have a R8 and a R9, which the range finder folks hated the looks of. They actually look stunning, and I think G.G. had a hand in the design. I looked for a digital back in 2009 for these cameras, but the cost was at least $3000 for the 8mp digital back. Being mainly a Nikon shooter I skipped the digital back and opted for a D700. I have a F4s, but prefer using my F6, F100, or Fm2n. Great stream as usual!
The AF with G lenses is awesome! You can also use S mode as well as P&Ph. The only problem is the DoF preview always shows closed down all the way. Oh well.
The first mass produced autofocus camera was the Konica C35AF of 1977. The first AF SLR was the Pentax ME-F of 1981.
Memory lane , I had the F2. Fm2, F4 , F5. I skipped the F3 I must dig them out now
How I so miss using 35mm film cameras. DSLRS and mirrorless are too expensive.
Late to the party but at 20:06, I believe there was one press edition (F4p?) that had an additional shutter stop at 1/350th and another at 1/750th. Very uncommon. My F4s didn't have it but I remember reading about it somewhere.
I use my F4S all the time. Duracell AA batteries work just fine for me. Been using them for years in a very cold climate.
I cannot think of anything witty to say about cabbages. I did get an email today that my 40mm Z lens is on its way to me, from my local camera store in Canada. I guess I am already a winner. Still, spin that wheel! Looking forward to the Homage to the F3, one of my favourite cameras.
Cabbages Kings and Grays of Westminster what a combination.
When buying an F4 be careful to ensure the LCD display seen in the viewfinder doesn’t have “bleeding” many now do with deterioration from age

So true, my first F4 had bleeding in the viewfinder so i got another F4 because of the great prices for a good viewfinder and to turn it into a standard F4 from the heavy F4e 😀 👍

@@nigel8uk yes, different cameras have common issues F3’s LCD’s start to fade, F100’s rubber finish often have a sticky back door, F2’s photomic head light meter electrical contacts and internal resistors fail, Nikkormat slow shutter speed s etc All these types of issues are age related
Still have my original F4S, I just can't part with it. Only had one failure with it due to a humidity issue at Cape Canaveral. Nikon fixed it and it never failed again and still works perfectly.
Hi! Is it possible to adapt vintage manual lenses (contax/zeiss, zuiko...) on the F4? Will there be huge limitations other than the lack of AF mode vs using native (or tokina etc) lenses? Thank you!
Thanks for the reminder on batteries, Kon. I checked my 801s and I'd left batteries in it - which were on the verge of turning nasty!
I had an F4s in the late 80s/early 90s and used it exclusively with a 135/2 AIS and TriX. I took some of my best shots with it. Gutted that I got rid of it! P/Xd it for my F5.
Don't forget the F4 included a second shutter release button for shooting vertical. I love my F4s, the weight is a great stabiliser. Cabbage is ok pickled, like in kimchi.
Hello I love cabbages brought one in Tesco’s today
Always ate my greens as a kid, my mother would praise me by saying that I was a good cabbage!
I had an F4 - lovely camera. Mine had a bit of bleed in one of the LCDs which turned it into a bit of a cabbage sadly!
After waiting seemingly ages for a taxi, one eventually arrived but, in my excitement, I stepped into the CABBAGES ("cab ages" 😎) before I should have done and dropped my treasured F4. However, being a sturdily made Nikon, no damage to the camera accrued but the damage to the taxi was extraordinary.
I was shooting my F3hp yesterday. Always thinking about picking up an F4 but I already have so many cameras. It just doesn’t make much sense.
Konica made the first mass market autofocus camera and Polaroid the first SLR. Minolta was third. All cabbages now but.. Kept my F4s for 15 years till D1.
I own both the F3 and F4. The F4 is way better in my opinion. Better metering, diopter for my lousy eyesight, faster max shutter speed and winder. All it needs to be better.
I love my F4…use it all the time. But don’t think that the F4 is some old camera from the distance past. If you shot film it’s very much a viable shooting option.
F3AF didn't have screwdriver AF, all 3 dedicated lenses had an integrated AF motor G lenses have integrated AF motor and mechanical aperture control, E lenses have integrated AF and aperture drives
Oi - what's wrong with the F-301? Great stream otherwise :-) Thanks to Kon for sorting out my cap...
Sorry I cannot be with you next Friday as out for the day with NO S/E but will watch for the Cabbages on the recorded stream
Love to have a z9 in cabbage color
The Nikon F3 was produced for over 30 years. The F4 does NOT support image stabilisation, about the only thing it doesn't. The F5 and F6 both have dumbed down dirty digital Menus so you CAN'T change settings and keep your eye on your subject.
It's Friday it used to be Crackerjack now it's Grays'. Don't get three cabbages or you're out!
Cabbages pickled in Korea = Kim Chi (or kimchi)😋. Does anyone else have recipes for pickled cabbages?
Nothing to do with the F4 but, since your mentioned it, the D40 actually had only 3 focus points.
Why pay homage, it's still alive. Kodak had its first digital back made for it. Mine is still great.
Remember the Cabbage prize on Crackerjack a Friday TV show long ago. Prefer your Friday show.
I would love to win the cabbages giveaway comp! Cath Middleton
Canon FD lenses were made by Nikkor. EF lenses were created so Canon could make their own.
Cabbages are the new lemons
Cabbages, potatoes, tomatoes, I want to win!
Cabbages pickled in Germany = sauerkraut.😋
I like corned beef and cabbage
Well.. a bit late to the party. I actually own few F4 cameras: F4, F4S, F4E and a zombie F4S.
Never tried the F4 unfortunately but I've had cabbage many times.
I keep thinking about buying a F4 or F5 but I will stick with cabbages.
Wondering if you have a Nikon FA was my first Nikon film camera .. and how many cabbages of cash would I need to get one in the USA... yes I said Cabbages
Forgot about the cabbage, oops!
Cabbages, best open a window!!
An homage? A homage?
I would like to win the cabbage giveaway
I don't like Cabbages, I do like Nikon
I eat cabbage everyday.
Nikon were cabbages for not releasing a screw-motor enabled FTZ adapter.

@@DixonLu Many thanks
I bought 2 F4E's when all the idiots went dumbed down dirty digital. Their price dropped to where I could afford them. I had an F301 previously and still. In an Homage to the F4 why are you showing a book on the Nikon F?????????????
I don't like cabbages

At the time of the F4 release I was using Cabbage T90’s. Superb camera. My friend just got the F4 and I was blown away with the build Quality.when cabbage ditched the FD mount and I wanted to go to auto-focus I remembered the F4 and the fact that Nikon had kept the same lens mount and I knew I had to change to Nikon. (D2H) at the time.
