Gray Area Cartoons: Not For Kids and Not Quite Adult

Фильм және анимация

The trend of gray area cartoons, basically a blurred gray line for shows that lean between the edge of being a more mature kids show or a mild adult animated show, has been flourishing since the early 2010's. Prime examples include Regular Show, Daria, and Dan Vs.
The main driving factor for these becoming so successful is that it’s easier to market toward a broad demographic instead of targeting a certain niche, which has a higher chance of failing. Not to mention a wide variety of mature subject matter can be discussed that is also appropriate for most ages and is much looser in terms of standards.
In my opinion, it's a good thing that this category is rising because it destigmatizes "animation is just for kids" and shows that animation can appeal to anyone. It also gives creators more freedom by using the TV-PG or TV-14 rating, thank Cartoon Network for pioneering this concept!

I think the TVY and TVY7 ratings were originally for the children's programming block. When the rating system came out, networks aired children's shows on weekday mornings, afternoons, and on Saturday mornings, but the networks don't have these programming blocks anymore, so the Y and Y7 ratings really are unnecessary now.

Honestly, I really miss how "edgy" early 2010s CN was: Regular Show, Mad, Generator Rex, Robotomy, Sym-Bionic Titan, and even Secret Mountain Fort Awesome all pushed boundaries and nowadays CN doesn't really have much to offer in terms of teen/young adult shows. Yeah we had a Problem Solverz and Annoying Orange get thrown into the lineup, but overall CN was a lot more experimental back then, and I wish they could return to the tv-PG format. Though given the status of cable TV and CN as a whole, I doubt that will happen any time soon.

I think The Simpsons, while is an adult show like King Of The Hill, should still be mentioned here. It was aimed at families so much at the time that they even marketed it to kids and sold toys/games, and yet it was considered very taboo. Simpsons T-shirts were banned in some schools. A very similar thing happened with Ren and Stimpy. Also I don't think Dan Vs couldn't be pitched on to CN because of the CN Real era. Adult Swim is still Cartoon Network. It sounds like they probably wouldn't have wanted the show at all. Also, the fact that Checkered Past is on Adult Swim, Nick Rewind was a thing on Teen Nick, and episodes like Mid-Life Crustacean are now banned episodes, shows to me that the standards for what's acceptable on children's entertainment has drastically changed. We're always seeing posts on social media about how much innuendo there was in 90s/00s/early 2010s cartoon shows and movies. Michael Ouweleen, the current president of CN, said he wants the channel to be more of an "animation network" than a "kid network". It wasn't really meant exclusively for kids to begin with tbh.

New subscriber here! Speaking of The N, one example of a "gray area" cartoon I must bring up is "O'Grady", produced by the same folks as "Home Movies", which itself may also fall under this category. Like "Daria", "O'Grady" is aimed more at audiences who are of the same adolescent age group as the main protagonists. It's a very underrated sitcom that combines high school life struggles with surreal phenomenons, and I recommend seeking it out! Another underrated gray area show I'd like to bring is a more recent one: "Young Love" on HBO Max. I honestly thought it would be more family-friendly like the original "Hair Love" short film it's based on, and while it IS safe for family viewing, it contains mild swears and references to sex & drugs. "Young Love" is a very good, chilled slice-of-life cartoon that is also worth checking out. I have no idea why it's rarely talked on social media.

Already know that people say Total Drama can fit. It’s predecessor show, 6Teen can as well. I think Bob’s Burgers can fit there too. But anyways they’re all mature cartoons that have adult things but compared to something like South Park or Family Guy, they don’t go as far as they do and are aimed like at a tween to teen age range.

Could Gumball be apart of these “Gray area” in it’s later seasons? I know that Gumball is rated TV-Y7 FV in the U.S. but in most countries the show has a TV-PG rating or an equivalent to one. Some reasons why I feel this way is because of some the episodes have political or social commentary that younger viewers may not fully understand. Anther reason why are because of the more short of in your face adult jokes, I remember watching the choices when I was younger and not understanding why Nicole and Richard in the doctors office had this “ oh no” expression and then showing them getting married but when I got older I understood that the reason why they acted that way was because they had sex and conceived gumball before they got married. In the episode The Cringe, there is this scene/joke where Gumball was going to give HotDog Guy “the talk”, and I can only imagine the amount of young children that probably asked their parents what Gumball was talking about. But Gumball with its humor feels like it’s aiming at a younger demographic.

One cartoon I'd say falls in the grey area would be Fred's Head (or Blaise le blasé as it's known in its original French), an obscure French-Canadian cartoon that aired on Teletoon which was aimed specifically for teenagers, as it had references to alcohol, cheating, minor swearing, etc. It didn't last any longer than a single season (which is a shame as I found it pretty funny and relatable).

I think the golden of animation deserves a special mention as the "original" grey area cartoons, because back then, cartoons were primarily aimed towards the adult audience in the movie theater to give them a brief laugh before their movie begins, however, due to the Hays Code, virtually *_all_* media at the time had to be family friendly whether they liked it or not. One of the most well known examples of the Hays Code's effect on media at the time can be seen with the Betty Boop cartoons, which were already much tamer than any modern "adult" cartoon, and yet they still had to be toned down by about 1935, due to the Hays Code starting to take effect by that point.

Beavis and butthead were the first to bring about shock humor in cartoons which is why we have shows like South Park, family guy and Rick and Morty. Also while ren and stimpy came out around the time beavis and butthead came out and carries the shock value genre it was on Nickelodeon which is a kids network. Still not clear on where Centaurworld lies, it has Adult Cartoon vibes written all over it, but so do a lot of shows these days that are obstensively "kids" cartoons. It was made for animation nerds first and foremost though, and I kinda feel like we're gonna see its influence in the animation scene some subtle way down the line. And as an aside on video production, I suggest a bit more emphasis on the transition from one subject to the other. Maybe a beat to breathe, a bit more emphasis on the title of the next show, etc. Or conversely, go a bit more into the conversational vibe. This is the first video of yours I've seen, but it feels like you could go either way, depending on preference- as a more presentation oriented channel, or as a more discussion/essay type. But in this video, the idea of whether or not it was a list video felt a little less prioritized. Which is fine for me- I watched the whole thing after all, but you know how the internet is with lists. Also, cute avatar. Lean into the aesthetic.

Does my adventures with Superman count as a gray area cartoon? it feels a little light-hearted for an adult swim program but I don't think it kind of deserves to be on Adult Swim

Honestly, I really miss Dan vs: the show had so many stories to be told and nowadays the show has been canceled from the hub for over 10 years. Yeah sure the show is underrated and nobody really talks about it lately, but overall Dan vs is alot more edgy and experimental for a show that actually aired on the same network as mlp, and I wish it could continue one day. I would expect freeform but though given how freeform is as a whole with the majority of shows they air on that channel I doubt that they will be interested in picking up Dan vs. And I don't even know if TBS as a channel would do a better job at handling dan vs if they picked it up.

If they make a reboot of Dan Vs, the ideas for episodes I have would be Dan Vs The Network, The Internet Troll, and Karen.

Also if they brought it back, the networks I would expect to pick it up would either be FXX or Adult Swim. Freeform is kind of an "anything goes" sort of channel and wouldn't work, MTV has nothing to do with animation these days, Comedy Central would treat it horrendously as we saw with the Beavis and Butthead revival and Digman, TBS doesn't do animation anymore since 2021, and Syfy also abandoned animation in 2021.
