Grave of the Fireflies - Official Trailer

Фильм және анимация

In the aftermath of a World War II bombing, two orphaned children struggle to survive in the Japanese countryside. To Seita and his four-year-old sister, the helplessness and indifference of their countrymen is even more painful than the enemy raids. Through desperation, hunger and grief, these children's lives are as heartbreakingly fragile as their spirit and love is inspiring.

There’s so many small details in this movie that make it so relatable, so human, and so sad. From the aunt immediately scolding Seita and asking if he contacted his father instead of consoling the fucking child for his loss to Seita finally breaking down his stay-strong facade after Setsuko tells him she knows their mom is dead because the purpose of the facade was only to protect the innocence of his sister. What a stab in the heart.

Ghibli films taught me 500000000000000 things that Disney never has, and I've grown up with my mom as a Disney addict, always playing Disney movies and literally everyone I know is a Disney fan because not many people watch Ghibli movies in New Jersey because they are idiots who stereotype all anime (which is ridiculous) But in all honesty I have never learned better lessons than the ones that Hayao Miyazaki and Isao have taught me

People need to keep in mind that this movie was not created send out anti-war messages, or put the blame on Americans (This was publicly clarified by the creators of the movie). It beautifully illustrates the conflicting interactions between individuals and the Japanese society during the chaotic periods during the pacific war. The original story was written based on the actual story of the author, from the guilt of allowing his sister die from starvation during the war from starvation. Each character has flaws, and makes mistakes that leads to its consequences, while also illustrating heart warming aspects despite desperation during war, such as the lady who gave rice balls to Seita when he was nearing his death at the station. Regardless your view towards history, I believe this movie is a masterpiece that allows you to think about the various interactions that takes place, beyond simply feeling sad, allows the audience to develop various interpretations.

@@fortunefavoursthewriterYes, was that supposed to be a takedown gotcha moment? It shows the realities of war, that’s basically every good anti war film ever made. The creators can say this film isn’t anti war but they could also say this film is a live action period piece set in the 1650s, just saying it doesn’t make it true, this is clearly anti war.

  • @fortunefavoursthewriter

@connorbranscombe6819 But showcasing the civilian point of war makes it anti-war? Showcasing the atrocities of war makes it anti-war? So all war movies should just glamorize and show the one-sided heroics of war? Those are the movies that are accurate? Yeah right. Like you said, just because someone says it, doesn't make it true. Just because you believe only the golden side of war should make an accurate movie. Doesn't make it true. And I'm not trying to 'take down' anything. I'm trying to showcase an educated, realistic perspective. Anyone who's actually been through war, who's touched it, knows it's absolutely terrible. George Orwell fought it a war and writes of it's horrors and uselessness. Hayao Miyazaki himself lived through wars and bombing. But I'm supposed to take your opinion as the correct one. Some simple minded child who watched a war movie and couldn't enjoy the cool action packed scenes???? Go read a history book and grow up.

I have lost my mother in this pandemic, i have my younger sister too, i don't have a very good relationship with my father, forget relatives. This movie tramatized me, unleashed my deepest fears. I have experienced ptsd while watching this movie. People are so cold hurted, who show data, statistics, numbers of any casualties. They lack compassion, they can't feel if they haven't suffered anything It looks very cool for them to say this many millions people died. Each dead person in those reported and unreported millions of death, have their own story, own trauma and thier own tragedy. And one death in family is not only just one death, it literally destroys 2-3 lives for their rest of the life. I am fortunate enough, that i atleast i have food to eat and house to live. Which most of the time we took for granted. This is so sadning to think that war, pandamic have made several childrens and young adults orphans.

I have watched this film around 4 times. Not that the pain diminishes each time, but to remind myself , that this is what humans are like, some fight, all suffer. Some never wake up and some never end up living. Some die young and some die old enough to be regretful of their lives. There is a lot of happiness in this movie, the little moments of brother sister love, and the toffee candy. These little moments are what matter the most

I Doubt it you see it's their story. The difference between their story and ours is that They made it. Even if they made the movie the story went along with their imagination so they can convince them self of any happy ending they want too. We are not in control of the ending so when we see something happen all we can do is hope that it ended well. That's why when you are left on an unanswered question your mind cannot relax until the Director confirms a happy ending for example Your Name SPOILER In Your Name even tho they met again everyone wanted to confirm their relationship rather than imaging it with their head.

I watched this film recently. As a grandson of someone who lived through the Japanese occupation of our south east asian country during WW2 and was around to tell his grandkids about the horrors done by the japanese soldiers, this film still moved my heart.. It is hard to reconcile the price of war on civilians of both sides. The people of both sides suffered hunger, malnutrition, physical and psychological torture. There was no glee of retribution that "the other side suffered just as horribly" ... Last night, weeks after watching this film I still think of Setsuko when I had my rice dinner, and felt soo gratefull and yet achingly sad for her and others kids like her, for the bellyfull meal that I had. White rice never tasted so fullfilling and precious to me.. What an amazing thing storytelling can do.

I assure you. US civilians did not see anywhere near the hardships suffered by Japanese civilians. The author, Akiyuki Nosaka actually admitted that he wasn't giving enough food to his sister, in order for him to survive because of the fact that there wasn't just enough food for both of them, and he did get relieved when his sister died, but tbh if he didn't do that they'd have both probably end up dying by starvation. The reality is much more bitter.

If this film teaches you anything, I hope it inspires you to think beyond those abstract “countries” and political justifications and to give a thought to the countless innocent people who get caught up in conflicts because they just so happened to be born at the wrong place at the wrong time. However justified or holy your cause may be, wars do have casualties and consequences on both sides.

"just" wars is just a made up modern concept used to justify war. There are never good and bad guys in wars, and it's always innocent people who pay the ultimate price for other people's crimes. People who argue Japan "had it coming" for continuing to wage war or that the protagonists of this movie deserved it (it's a movie ffs, a story) are horribly misguided and without compassion -- not to mention they missed the point. It's not about the US is right or Japan is right, because neither were. No noncombatant civilian deserves to die, and many times it's their lives which slip through the cracks when two parties fight major wars. The sad irony is that many times such "tactical" carpet bombings had little to no effect on a nation's ability wage war except killing thousands of innocents and ruining the lives of countless others.

This is genuinely one of my favorite movies of all time and definitely the best war film period. The animation is beautiful and the music does its job, however they are part of a story that I never ever want to experience again, there is such a simple beauty in a lot of peaceful quiet and honestly downright nostalgic moments yet the events that fall upon these two children have this looming air of dread over the entire film that no other film I think has ever done to me like that. I'm not the best at expressing my feelings with words but this movie was so incredibly touching that I just can't go without writing a comment. So, I've been trying to watch all of the Ghibli movies and I noticed the only one missing from Netflix was this. I rented it from my local library and went into the movie with no idea of what was to come... Just the start of this movie was so, so heavy and I instantly realised that this isn't your ordinary Studio Ghibli movie.. I felt like I was on the verge of tears almost constantly but I just couldn't let myself cry since I watched it with my younger sister even though I could have.. But now that it's past midnight and I'm in bed thinking about it I am crying my eyes out, the movie was so extremely sad.. and I almost missed the ending scenes due to the movie being so intense. Grave of the Fireflies is undeniably the most gut wrenching movie that you'll ever see. It'll totally change your perspective on so many things in life and it'll leave a huge mark on you. It's so powerful how an animated film can tell such a profound story that'll definitely stick with you for a very long time.. There aren't that many movies that can impact one so deeply and this movie is just a true masterpiece. Thank you Akiyuki Nosaka for sharing your extremely moving story to the world and Isao Takahata for creating this incredible movie inspired by the book, may the both of you rest easy.

I didn't cry, but I felt like crying. I ended up talking it out with my parents and friends is what I did, just cause I couldn't stay quiet about it. What it really ended up making me do is talk about it, its a movie that makes you think. Its clearly an anti-war film, and its unfortunate what happened to the characters in this film.

The soundtrack, the artwork...a perfect rendering of the wonders of youth, how children see the world and their limitless imagination. The flamboyant colors of the artwork and the innocent playfulness of the soundtracks....all of it is mesmerizing. Studio Ghibli and the composers made a wonderful world as seen/felt by children, while showing daily struggles, but the strong emotions and relationships make it all worthwhile.

The age gap between my younger sister and I is around the same as the siblings in this film. I loved being a part of her growing up, while having her help me keep my youth, through radiating such a simple understanding of life that is ever-present in a child but forgotten by many adults. Being too young to understand why people actually kill off other human beings. Being too young to care about war and only caring that you keep your older sibling close to you throughout the conflict. This is one of very few films which is able to accurately capture the essence of not just being brother and sister but knowing that without one, the other could never function or live through such an ordeal. It is a true love story in its purest and more crushing form. I actually had to leave the room a few times throughout this film, when I first watched it, because I didn't want my mates to see me full fledged crying. The last time I cried like that I was 10 and my rabbit died. Anything that can break me down into my own soul THAT much, deserves a comment opening up in appreciation. What an excellent and timeless film.

eclipsesonic Sadly, in my situation, there is no winning with anime haters. With my dad, he thought it was childish and stupid until he watched GotF with me. Then he thought it was boring and "too melodramatic for a cartoon." I guess if it's Japanese, or rather non-American(although there seems to be a strong discrimination against Japanese media especially), people are going to find some excuse to try to not like it. On the other hand though, I also watched this movie with my grandfather, and he loved it.

The English subtitle "I came to deliver something you'd lost." in Japanese says the lost part is "something you'd forgotten ("I came to deliver something you'd forgotten"). This indicates that these events were not uncommon at the time. However, as time went on, people began to forget. When this movie was released in the late 80's, when Japan was booming, it was 40 years after the war, and these events were becoming distant from generation.

My great uncle who I never met nor ever even saw a picture of died the same way at age 7 in Japan during WWII. He wasn't orphaned (mom survived the war) and they had a home since they lived in countryside outside of Hachinohe, but the malnutrition right down to the constant diarrhea near the end is right on point for how he died, with no access to medicine and minimal food rations. I'm glad this amazing film wasn't released until 3 years after my grandmother's death, because she would have probably seen it and I can't imagine reliving that kind of trauma again. RIP Abe-chan.

No movie has ever made me cry as hard as this one. Probably because the ages of the characters are about the same as the age differences between my sister and I and we grew up in a military family. The entire time watching it, I kept feeling that under different circumstances, this could have been her and me. Also, I think more Americans should watch this movie. I don't think enough of us realize what it's like to be the battleground of a major, modern war. The US hasn't had a war fought on its soil since the 1800s and too many simply don't understand the trauma inflicted by military action.

This movie breaks your heart. There's a lot of films that can make you cry, but this movie goes beyond that, it beautifully hurts you.

I hate Isao Takahata for making this film. Actually, if i didn't jumped of joy when i knew he died, it was because i'm too good person to be happy for someone else's suffering. PD: i would see his other films. But this i wouldn't watch it even for all the money in the world
