I liked her alot and can still remember the episode where the dad James dies ...still can bring tears to my eyes. She played the role perfectly and how strong she was til she wasnt. That one broke me

I'm glad to see this homage to a great actress who deserved a lot of respect. I know that Esther and John wanted Good Times to be more of a drama but the Evans family's impoverished situation would have been far too depressing if it hadn't been for the comic relief. It was so successful because it had the right balance of serious situations along with the humor. Esther had the right idea of showing a loving father in the home and truly once John left the show it was never the same.

I know she wanted to make the show more realistic, but atleast she was able to make the show a strong family show and even help her friends. Great lady, Thanks Jordan!

Oh I'm so happy that you honored this wonderful lady Jordan. I live not far from there and I have brought her flowers twice in the last few years. Last time I was there, the grandson of the owner of the cemetery property and I had a nice talk and he was sad that such a historic cemetery had been ignored and asked me to write a letter. It's an historic old African American cemetery as you know and is on one of the busiest and most unglamorous corners of Broward County. I used to go to the recording studio and record right around the corner from there many years ago. ❤️ this.

I never watched Maud but I was a fan of Good Times -- especially while she and Amos were on the show. They were the heart of the show. Growing up poor in small all-white town, my only black experience was TV. I really credit her and Nell Carter for shaping my views on race. RIP to them both. Thanks, Jordan.

Oh yeah, I remember that video! I'm the flight attendant from Dayton that took your first Scott Michaels' tour. I had JJ on a flight to Columbus once. He kept to himself, unfortunately. Didn't get to talk much to him or take a picture. @@DazewithJordantheLion

As usual, a fantastic cemetery vlog. The cemetery doesn’t look as well kept as it should be 😢. I also remember Esther Rolle from Good Times and Driving Miss Daisy. My mom and I once saw her many years ago, driving in Los Angeles. She looked so glamorous.

I want to mention she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie in 1979 for "Summer of my German soldier"

Good Times was outstanding and I'm so disheartened to hear what John Amos is going through right now. It's egregious! I'm experiencing something similar as a disabled woman and it breaks my heart.

Jordan , i saw Esther Rolle in the mid to late 80's when i worked as a busboy at the Hershey Hotel ( now Doubletree Hotel ) in Philly . In the entrance to the restaurant lobby there was a long bench and chairs nearby for patrons to sit while waiting to be seated . She was a nice lady very friendly. 😊 I also saw Hank Aaron in the same lobby , I was shocked !!

I Love her!! She was adorable! I always felt comforted some how watching her. I have seen her both on Maude and of course Good Times.

That episode really rocked me as a kid as well.

I saw her at her house. It was in the Baldwin Hills at her hilltop home. Her house had a wonderful view of Los Angeles, looking north towards the Hollywood Hills, that was about 1979. Thanks for bringing light to her life, with your vlog, as how she wanted the best portrayal of people in her TV series.

It's nice to see how much interest you took in featuring Ester Roll, because of this I could never consider you to be a bigot nor a racist. Sometimes we think about that when we see certain white performers or creators. You have certainly earned credibility in my world with this posting.

I met her at an Urban League dinner. She was a very gracious and intelligent lady.
