Grateful Dead - Throwing Stones (Oakland, CA 12/31/87)

Музыка

"Debuting in September 1982, Throwing Stones rather quickly found a home as the penultimate song of many Grateful Dead second sets in the final decade+ of the Dead's touring activities. Usually followed by Not Fade Away, Throwing Stones was a powerful Weir-Barlow song with a political message, a rarity for the Grateful Dead. Now, nearly forty years after its debut, its message still resonates, perhaps more strongly than ever." - David Lemieux

Kind of weird to think the next time we get a new Dead video, it will be 2020. That's to keep the lenses at his focal point. His vision would otherwise go either blurry, or he would see double. He definitely would not wear them if his eyes could focus properly. It's typical of aging and will eventually affect most of us. That said, he was one hell of a musician.

I have to say I agree expect for Bobby and that's completely to be expected. It was generally either him or Jerry that the band had eyes on and played to them. Watching body language etc. But Bobby even admits he kinda leaves his real persona behind and during a show a sort of mythical superhero takes over. Well the music leads them, but yeah however one sees it, it's pure 🪄✨

The solo was a confusing mess back then. It had no beauty to it. They converted it to Samson and Delilah shortly after the 7/3/84 Kansas City show but I haven't determined which show. This video has recharged me to use the archives to find the show when the solo became S & D because it turned this song into a masterpiece 🎧🎶🌈 😎

@@staggerlee4979 I'm a big fan of Throwing Stones, but an even bigger fan of Sampson and Delilah! Some of the S&D performances during the '70's were such absolute FIRE! Particularly the solos! And the drum intro was ALWAYS recognizable...man I love their rendition of that one! I always listen to a show while I'm at work - last night I listened to the show on 5/15/70 from the Filmore East in New York. Rarely am I let down by a show but I was let down by this one. Lots of acoustic songs that just didn't have much direction...I bought the show from Itunes as one of their "Road Trips" series. There's one song where Bob is just trying his best to literally SCREAM every single word!! Pass on that one if you happen to come by it...one of their worst shows I've ever heard from a normally AMAZING era for the Dead!!

I remember everyone singing to Ashes to ashes all fall down.. So later that day, while tripping balls, telling a friend, I really liked that one earlier, Ashes to ashes. Lol That day I barely remember except two things-- it was broiling hot all day and that I had the time of my life. Dead and Dylan,?.How could you not? Lol

He is supposedly sober during these years, but I have to imagine after seeing him in multiple 87-90 years when him and Brent are ripping it's hard to believe they both aren't "up and down and all over in the best possible way" Brent apparently egged on Jerry to use. How true this is idk. And

Apparently Brent's death was when Jerry started playing like he did in the early to mid 80's god for some of the shows that truly were terrible they more than make up for it with magic like this. I'd love just one of these 87-90 rippers to shake me bones like crazy to "love and in person" instead of watching years later. However I'll gladly take this however I can get it ✌️😉🙃

@@CrimsonJam Wow. OK... Ram Dass was born Richard Alpert. He taught with Tim Leary at Harvard and both were tossed out for giving graduate students psychedelics in their psychiatric research program. Check out the double blind study with liturgical students. Half got psilocybin, half a placebo. In a church. Guess who saw God? He then went to India, where he met Bhagavan Dass, who turned him on to his guru, Neem Karoli Baba. Then he took up the spiritual path, wrote the classic BE HERE NOW, among many other works. Super high guy. Dig him.
