One of the best Scarlets ever! Captain Trips sails again, bringing out Tiger's ferocious grip on the listeners. Fluid arpeggios dance across exotic hardwoods, and the good Captain casts his net and captures us once again!

Wow ! You certainly have a way of painting pictures with words. I feel that a Scarlet without a Fire is like a day without a Sunshine Daydream, but that's OK because we can always put on the "In The Dark" album. Cheers !

For real, the song is the bass line, no one ever says shit about Phil. Im suprised my the lack of enthusiasm by Brent. Usually dramatic in his playing.

I was at this concert with my brother Jay July 7, 1989 the last concert at JFK stadium. Scarlet Begonias is my favorite tune by Grateful Dead. I saw Grateful Dead 33 times in concert the most of any other band I ever saw. My brother and I saw Grateful Dead/Bob Dylan on July 10, 1987. I just love their music. RIP Jerry

With due respect, mid 70s is the best time for the great Grateful Dead. Keith on the keyboard was the best era IMHO. To me, Brent was given a more prominent place in the sound mix in GD concerts. Nothing against Brent though as he had a great understanding with Jerry.

As I was walkin' down Grosvenor Square, Not a chill to the winter but a nip to the air, From the other direction she was calling my eye, Could be an illusion but I might as well try, might as well try. She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes, And I knew without askin' she was into the blues. She wore scarlet begonias tucked into her curls, I knew right away she was not like other girls, other girls. In the heat of the evening when the dealin' got rough, She was too pat to open and too cool to bluff. As I picked up my matches and was closin' the door, I had one of those flashes, I'd been there before, been there before. Well I ain't often right but I've never been wrong, Seldom turns out the way it does in the song. Once in a while you get shown the light In the strangest of places if you look at it right. Well there ain't nothin' wrong with the way she moves, All scarlet begonias or a touch of the blues. And there's nothing wrong with the look that's in her eyes I had to learn the hard way to let her pass by, let her pass by. The wind in the willow's playing "Tea for Two, " The sky was yellow and the sun was blue, Strangers stopping strangers just to shake their hand, Everybody's playing in the heart of gold band, heart of gold band. Songwriters: Jerry Garcia / Robert Hunter

If you ever wanted to explain to someone why people loved the Grateful Dead live just let them watch this. So many times jams can lose the average listener but not with the dead. The jam becomes its own song.

I attended this show with my brother. I was 23. Little known fact: JFK STADIUM was in such disrepair that the city of Philadelphia almost cancelled the show THAT DAY to condemn the building, which had major major structural flaws and compromised support beam integrity-LIKE CHUNKS OF CONCRETE MISSING,EXPOSED REBAR,etc. Fortunately, the go ahead was approved, the show went off without a hitch, and the structure leveled shortly therafter. It was utilized one more time when the STONES rehearsed there for, I believe, Steel wheels tour. Imagine telling 70,000 Deadheads no-show today! Yeah, it almost happened. Other than 7/12/90, and maybe fall 89 at the Spectrum(R.I.P), this was BY FAR my fav show. Amazing energy going back and forth between the band and the deadheads all night. Let It Grow, Scarlet-Fire, Estimated, Other One. What more could you ask for as a 23 year old kid?

Phil Lesh, maybe more than the others (in my opinion), really improved during every stage of their career. By this point he was so so so good. Not to take anything away from the others, but he was nowhere near the bassist in the early days as he was in later on. By '89 he could DRIVE the thing so hard. Just my opinion.

That's very true. They all had improved by this point - this was the apex in a lot of ways, really, but Phil really is something on this tune - especially compared to how he had been playing just 7-8 years prior. They're a marked difference, and way for the better. His clarity, his phrasing, his melodic ideas, his feel - just dynamite!

A difficult song to play. You can see them getting ready for it at the beginning. Around 3:40 Garcia signals to his band mates the time is here for them to "take the musical excursion" and why, in an interview reflecting on a question about his playing he answered saying, "i don't play the same song the same twice." One of those excursions is wonderfully taken here by the Grateful Dead as they play out, "Scarlet Begonias".

Was in the front "row" (obviously, it was GA) in front of Jerry. Not the best spot for sound, but still excellent... and it was a very special evening. Even mom and dad were there, too, up in the stands.. their one and only GD show. They loved it. In truth, it wasn't as great as Buffalo on the 4th. That was truly a legendary show. But it was probably the second best night on the '89 east coast summer tour. The best Scarlet and Scarlet jam I ever saw was yet to come... Copps Coliseum, 1990, which was pure supercharged tripping from note one onward.
