Donna and Bob Wier had a magical vocal interaction. Their voices blended beautifully. So the Dead were very, very strong 72-77 in part due to Bobby and Donna really stepping up so Jerry could concentrate on writing and playing and making the movie. I think Donna helped give the Dead some breathing space and should be remembered for that. Kieth also had a wonderful piano sound - a great "gospel" feel that worked so well with Robert Hunter songs. Original American music.

I worked at many Greatful Dead shows in the old days, so bear with me. The espoused philosophy is only possible if you have the luxury of standing by while others fight and while others try to stop it. I was up for the draft, but I could not run away, and I could not quit go out into the streets, but I knew that the thing was wrong. I was 18 and all sorts of claims and motives were out there, competing for your attention. Now we know, but looking back, it was a real confusing time for a kid.

I love the Dead's early period, and this is one of my favorite songs. All the more amazing that Pigpen and Bob Weir were, supposedly, struggling to keep up, and were in fact "fired" in 68 or 69, but essentially kept showing up anyway. Jerry Garcia was an inspired guitarist even then, but damn. I don't think any of the Dead were good enough technically, at that time, to stick on side and go about kicking people out of bands. The band rocked, and Pig and Bob were big reasons for that.
@jazzmanchgo
4 жыл бұрын
Well, they weren't struggling so much on straight-ahead rock & roll like this -- it was the "out" stuff, the free-form jams, that they were getting lost in. And as the Dead grew, those jams got more complex and exploratory. Weir was eventually able to find his place in them, but poor Pig never really did, which was why they relegated him to hand-drums and percussion for a while (which, supposedly, really broke his heart).

Thanks for the posting, love this song. I realize the Dead only did this song 7 times in concert and understand the quote from Jerry: however, I honestly want to know: if Jerry felt this way, why (even though they did not write it) did they play "Morning Dew" (which I also love) so many times? Not looking for flames, just honest answers.

@redtelephone66 If the song was inspired by anything Arthur Lee did, I think it would have to be "7 And 7 Is". I can't think of too much else from Love that reminds me of this particular song. "7" didn't come out until the second Love album, but I think they used to play it in concert well before then.

@detkadetkadetka I think the fact there is no military conscription (draft) as there was during the Vietnam War, casualties in Afghanistan are relatively much lower, napalm (sp?) is not being used as it was in Vietnam (the use of this and images that showed its horrific effects on civilians was a major factor in turning many Americans against the war.) and the idea that the present conflict is in response to 9/11, thereby justifying the war, point to why there is no large anti-war "movement".

Great music
different versions..... i think almost every show, there songs were different, be it from lyrics or sound.... thats one aspect that made them so great...
Nice track much better than the Album it was on.
Forget the "Ds" and the "Rs" -- just get into this mix and dance. Life is too short. Enjoy it all while you can (or while you can afford to enjoy it, anyway).
only love can conquer hate
@petegib7 yes to that, I've always liked the first studio album as well. As for 'garage rock' I think even by this time Garcia already knew his way around the guitar much better than most professional rock and rollers of the day.
Epic introduction
Those were the days.
I love the LSD, AND THE GRATEFUL DEAD, the days spent at Grateful Dead shows in Cali blazin on a sunny afternoon in the lot waiting to see Jerry G. and the Grateful Dead, "hey now"...........doses, doses, dancing with ther pretty girls, and guys in beards, "she had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes" dancin, dancin in the street, THE DEAD ARE PLAYING GREAT MUSIC NOW FOLKS IN 2010 LOOK UP "THE ROAD" ON FACEBOOK TO HEAR RECENT GREAT DEAD SHOWS, NOW GO SEE THE DEAD SUMMER TOUR BE THERE
@redtelephone66 If the song was inspired by anything Arthur Lee did, I think it would have to be "7 And 7 Is". I can't think of too much else from Love that reminds me of this particular song. "7" didn't come out until the second Love album, but I think they used to play it in concert well before then.
STARTS AT 1:35 VERY NICE.
oh baby that is sweet
@60spastlife , Cont.> Peace to you and yours my friend!
But Morning Dew is a nuke song and they kept playing that
I think it's a damn good album but has little in common with the type of music associated with the Dead. Actually the first one and the one that followed, Anthem of the Sun, are my favorite Dead albums.
Thanks. But I am hoping to find out the exact date & concert so I can somehow put this song on CD. This is the best version I have ever heard! Totally rocks! Can anyone out there help-?
@MrMeddled Yes. Mickey Hart also I believe.
Significant vehicle without a top at 6:21...
Strange times indeed
@detkadetkadetka I think the fact there is no military conscription (draft) as there was during the Vietnam War, casualties in Afghanistan are relatively much lower, napalm (sp?) is not being used as it was in Vietnam (the use of this and images that showed its horrific effects on civilians was a major factor in turning many Americans against the war.) and the idea that the present conflict is in response to 9/11, thereby justifying the war, point to why there is no large anti-war "movement".
theres also an itunes version
@gratefulvideo Thanks for the upload. Could you post Jerry's quote somewhere. I really like it
My grandpa would think that guy mocking the Air Force would be just terrible
they have gotten a-lot better at making war more acceptable...
I can't read all the quotes. Any idea what Carly Simon is saying so intensely?!
@1999wharfrat Everything u just said x2000 spot on bro
It has nothing to do with " punk " this song is psychedelic at his best
THIS IS WHAT'S UNDER LYRICS ON THE ANNOTATED SITE FOR CREAM PUF WAR. artsites.ucsc.edu/GDead/agdl/puff.html

@MrSharkey11 Lets hope it does change, and for the better! All I'm sayin' guys, is dont vote for change just for the sake of change its self, thats what got us where we're at right now. Peace :-D

Don't vote at all! It's just playing their game and a way of making you think you're making a difference! Don't even go there!
That is not true. What is the name of the track (or track number) that the quote appears on? I have that CD and this quote is nowhere to be found in any part of the interview, unless there are different versions, which is highly unlikely.
whos going to the new years 2 day show in san fran...phil lesh and friends
BEST FUCKING QUOTE!!!!
2:32-3:19 Gal let 'em HAVE IT! Sucks something stopped her but that's how these shits go
Sorry for what happened to your uncle man...You're right though, so senseless .
I don't understand why put that quote, followed by that video? It's like allowing Jerry to talk some sense, then completely ignoring what he's just said.

@MrSharkey11 I was shocked also when I found out about the Bohemian Grove. If this was what you meant . Also the involvement with the politics WTF ?
fucking sick
@pallet3473 I don't think the band ever quite did learn how to sing :) Though Pig seems to have been one hell of a good front man on things like Turn On Your Love Light.
what concert is this version of cream puff war from? thanks!
Im not speechless but how long can someone talk to themselves before they get put away?
@MrSharkey11 I was shocked also when I found out about the Bohemian Grove. If this was what you meant . Alsothe involvement with the politics WTF ?
@clockworkplumbs then why are they protesting?
Sorry for the spiel on my uncle, but it is true & seeing this really brings it all back, Vietnam so sensless, Iraq/Afghanistan also senseless!
