I mean I've been in many actual knife fights and I was only stabbed once ... Myself. You're going to need to play a game to win against a knife and that game is Stay in the better position - if you're not in it get in it. make the knife attacker take risks. That way the knife attacker will either 1 take risks and you'll be able to disarm them Or 2 not take risks ... But now they can't kill you. You'll get cut but won't die.

The best part about a grappler is they have two hands. Every time a knife or weapon holder thinks they have two hands take their weapon. They will be reminded they only have one hand the weapon hand. Their own weapon is their liability in grappling.

Run, hide, fight. If you can run away completely, then this is your best option for survival. If you can run away but not completely out of danger because you're too tired, then hide and find something to fight with. A stick is preferable to keep distance, rocks or something like sand that you can throw in their eyes in the form of throwing a fake punch from slightly out of their range. Definitely watch "Active self protection" to learn about transitional spaces.

Yep! Running away is the smart move, not the cowardly one. I got randomly attacked by 2 dudes when I was on my way to work one night and the first thing that came to my mind was my Dad. He told me to never get in a fight with someone you don’t know (especially multiple people) because you don’t know what their mental state is and if they have a knife, gun, or some other weapon. After I was sucker-punched and had my lip split, I just put up my hands and walked backwards. Fighting for your “manhood” so that you don’t feel “disrespected” is going to offer little solace to your family when they’re standing around your coffin, or worse.

  • @1bullneck1

Had a couple of altercations against multiple dudes during my times. I always tried to defuse the situation with being passive and through talking to them. When i was 13, there was a dude at school who hated me despite the fact that i had no problem with anyone. He tried to fight me twice and both times i made him lool foolish as i defeated him in the most polite way possible. But i guess this made him have even a bigger grudge. So cut to a couple months later and a guy who i thought i had no issue with comes to tell me my brother is around back this store and so i follow him(yea was a bit naive), only to find that guy walk out behind me and another guy already around back. The three of them came at me so i covered my face and all their shots hit my back and sides but honestly i didn’t feel a thing. My adrenaline i think helped. I walked away without any real damage. Then at school in front of everyone i called him out on his cowardece. I purposely egged him on by dismantling his ego, til he came at me and i put him down again in front of everyone. No one messed with me at that school for the rest of my time there. Honestly i think if i fought back against the three of them i would have come away pretty messed up. If they had knifes or if i didn’t know them i would have ran like hell. The point i learned was pick your battles and you’ll be far better off, losing one moment. Especially one in some back ally, no one will care if you did the smart thing in such a situation and ran, and you stand way better chance of surviving it. Then get your revenge when you are prepared, and ready. But a guy with a knife, unless you have a gun, run, run like the fucking wind, like your life depended on every step… cause it does….

I wish he doesnt spread it around, i learned those techniques in Malaysia, 14 years old. Malaysia doesnt allow civilians to have, own or even hold a gun(without supervision from the authorities), so knives are the best concealed and silent weapon. But not many knows that, and machetes are prefered by thugs, i wonder training vids like these would change that. A small kukri or kris even modified or modern ones are f**king dangerous.

The best knife defense class I ever had was where the instructor told us to bring white tee shirts and the "knife" was a sharpie. At the end of the class, everyone had black lines all over their shirts & arms. Even when only the point was dangerous, you can't completely avoid it. The only truly safe way to avoid a blade is to avoid the altercation completely.

Compare an untrained slob against a judoka, a wrestler, or a Jiu Jitsu practitioner and see how well they fair against an opponent armed with a blade. The grappler's survival rate is always going to be higher than someone who has zero training. That said, there is no one perfect self defense system. In my Kung Fu self defence workshop, we did a segment for knife work. The very first thing my teacher told us was ALWAYS run away if that's an option (almost felt like my money was wasted😂), the second was 99% of the time (unless you're an EXPERT going up against an amateur - and even then the chances are even slimmer) you ARE going to get cut, and probably badly. He then went on to say hopefully by the end of the workshop we will know how to minimise the damage we stand to receive from such encounters. He also told us that sometimes a complete idiot with a knife can turnout to be more dangerous than an experienced knife handler, basically telling us to take each and every situation with a knife lethally serious

There is a reason why edged weaponry have survived the test of time through the aeons of warfare, even in” Modern times” it will never find itself obsolete, from the homemakers hands to the convicts prison shank, a sharp edge, Will always be an advantage, this is why the adage” Never bring a knife to a gun fight” actually will be more complete if one adds” Never FORGET to bring your knife to the gun fight” The moment that sharp steel gains momentum, the context has changed from ” I will try to defend..” to the likelihood: ” mitigating between the lesser of two evils” Ie: cuts or death.. The reason, cops handle people armed with knives so well is because there are lots of protocols in place and they receive training on how to handle potential knives. It's always at least two on one when apprehending someone and they will force the suspect into a safe position before one of them gets close while the other secures him. All of this is because they are terrified of knives.

That's also why every fighting knife should be double edged. You can leave one side (preferably the outer side when your arm is extended, facing your opponent) somewhat less sharp, or with a much more steep edge. The Shivworks clenchpick blades are incredibly effective for this very reason. I literally never leave home without mine. But you also need to understand how grappling works, be at least trained to the introduction of grappling (preferably grappling with a blade), and know that blades are not only effective towards the head, neck, and torso. Your best targets in a clench are going to be the areas that your opponent is trying to use their body on yours, specifically the arms/hands/wrist and legs. Plus, there are lots of squirty-boys in those appendages...

At my school, i have some "basic/generic" defenses that we teach, but i pretty much tell them to either run, give them what they want, or distract them long enough to pull out a gun. There is really a 0% chance of defending yourself from a knife. You pretty much either die on the street or on the way to the hospital. And lastly, not all the time but most of the time, if they want you dead, you are dead, they wouldnt even bother showing you the knife. IF you see the knife, they probably dont want you dead, they just want your stuff, and my stuff can be replaced. Its also another reminder to never have anything too valuable or irreplaceable on your person, and to be mindful of where you are and who is around you.

@@dvk578 he is spot on. I also got attacked with a knife and was lucky to dodge multible thrusts with it. I was lucky the attacker used some kind of fencing motion. grappling would have killed me. being on my feet, chaning the angles is what kept me alive. a few strikes and kicks would have get me quicker out of that specific situation.

If you're going to engage in knife combat, you need to accept that you're going to get cut. Go in hard and don't stop till it's over. Or run away. Half measures will only get you ventilated

The weapon is a great advantage. However, if this is something that interests you, or if your life unfortunately requires it, you learn and practice to increase your chances. Training doesn't turn you into a superhero, but it increases your chances of surviving (even if injured). I have practiced since I was about 3 to 4 years old. Some weapons are my toys as well. But this is not the case for most people. So, some crasy guy that grabs a knife and comes at you will probably have no skills with the weapon. Furthermore you should not focus on the weapon. You have to block or, somehow, prevent the original strick (which will probably be a comited one). But you must do that while attacking the wielder with enough brutality as to cause serious harm. This way he will be too overwhelmed to strike again, grab another weapon, or switch hands. It is difficult, the other person is going to resist and has the advantage of a weapon. However, learning and practice gives you a chance, which is more than you would have without it. There are ways and nothing is set when the fight begins.

Sorry mate anybody who has a knife especially against a grappler has such a big advantage. You and a friend Put a white tee shirts in and both have a marker pen attack one another for a minute and see what happens. Also try grappling him with a marker pen .I have been in the martial arts for over fifty years. I think the grappling is one of the best things you can do ,but not against a knife.Done loads of defence against a knife you always found to get cut hopefully not in the wrong place .Really you need a knife if you can’t run

@@johnbartholomew2035 I once had a friend attack me with a dummy knife because he wasn't convinced disarms would work, I wanted to show him, but when he came at me I instinctivly kicked him in the balls quite hard after which he didn't feel like trying again😅 in a real fight it would be probably not be over, but it's really hard even practicing "realistic knife defense" in sparring because the only chance is to be so violent that you can end the confrontation in one or two moves, which is really difficult if you don't want to seriously hurt the other one. I don't know what kind of grappling background you are talking about but I think it can be valuable doing grappling sparring with weapons. You know the channel hard2hurt? I think they have some good concepts and they also talk about weapon use even if you have a gun you might need your empty handed skills to get to it

When I was in military we out felt tips on plastic knives with chalk on them and jus go at it, then see where all the cuts are. One thing they would say is if your fighting a knife with your bare hands or jus in general, your going to get cut. Also a hard stick or baton is not so bad defense

I was a victim of a knife attack when I was growing/selling weed, and it really isn't as easy to disarm somebody with a knife as what those BS self-defense instructors claim. I boxed for the best part of my life, so I was no amateur when it came to defence. However, it meant nothing in the moment, and I still came off worse. Now, I would turn and run.
