Granulating colors selection | a watercolor set by Rembrandt

Ойын-сауық

Hello friends!
I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.
Today I'm swatching and reviewing a very interesting watercolor set: the selection of granulating colours by Rembrandt, the very fine watercolor professional range made in the Netherlands by Royal Talens.
This set consists of twelve tubes (it is also available in half pans) and it is an ideal introduction to the world of granulating watercolors: actually, it consists of nine naturally granulating watercolors and three "dusk" colors. A very interesting approach to a soft, gentle and organic granulation.
I will also try a simple galaxy, just to see how this paint behave on paper.

Dear Elisabetta, Perhaps you will go and see your son there soon, for a nice lunch. I love the Netherlands too! It seems we share a love of the country there.... Fields of Yellow tulips, Van Gogh pictures make me cry tears of joy, Leiden cheese is like a cheddar matured, with the red wax and cumin seeds, cat droppies licorice, Apple and cinnamon cake, spekulas cookies, Delft and it's Blue (Indanthrone Blue PG60) and creamy coloured whites... On Mum's side, my grandfather was one of 17 siblings, and married his first cousin, whom he knew from the day she was born! Later, my grandmother had to cut her hair short like a boy's cut, to leave her country behind in disguise, and the chief of Police of Holland, was her father, couldn't find them as they had moved to Australia. The boat which took 6 weeks, my mother was 5 years old. I always say this is the reason my family has all kinds of issues! Two brothers out of seventeen came out here, married, children, so I have quite a few cousins I have never met, in the Western parts of Sydney. Mum also has a painting that we think is a real Rubens and it was covered over by a bad restoration...It was found after the war in a rubbish pile for burning....my grandfather saving it and bringing it here. We will take it back to the Netherlands soon for the experts to evaluate it, x-ray it and begin the restoration removal to see the original. Luckily our evidence is a few photos before the terrible restoration in the 80's for 5000 dollars is enough, and the UV light will show the old layers of paint. As far as I can tell from the research, it is real, and the missing painting is a study of the Doubting Thomas, and it is not listed as missing. It has the old high white collar that is concertina. It spooks me a bit, for all kinds of reasons, and is in the south 6hrs from Sydney, with Mum, hanging in her bedroom! I wear a lot of the Delft blue dresses, and scarves, we have a few pieces of the china. My grandmother was from Delft. Most of our family with the surname Van Den Hooven are from Rotterdam.... I particularly like the tiles that are behind the old stoves and kitchens. Lets hope you see your son soon.... In kindred spirit, Eliza Most Beautiful Day is Today! 12th of July 2023; 9:07pm PS: I don't own any Rembrandt colours, but I liked the Ultramarine Blue that you swatched for us! I think the lavender might be nice too.

I really like the dusk colors but I actually prefer the Van Gogh version of Dusk Pink. It’s not quite as dark, and is one of my all-time favorite colors. By the way, some time in the distant future, many years from now (make that many, many years from now), when someone inherits your watercolor collection they will sure inherit something truly special. What a magnificent collection you have.

Thank you Elisabetta. I really enjoy my Rembrandt set of 48 pans that I was very lucky to find on Amazon for the ridiculous price of just £90! I still pinch myself at the luck. I also enjoy using Van Gogh’s dusk colours, and in their respect, see little (if any) difference in the colour or quality. Your video has highlighted so much for me. Some of the colours I haven’t (until now) been reaching for, but are truly beautiful. Sadly, everything is now packed away - play has halted as my home move is almost upon me. I leave on Sunday, spend a night in a hotel (I’ll need the rest), and meet up with the movers once more on Monday. Excited, but just a little scared too. To think I am going to have an actual whole room to have as a studio!!! That will slowly help me unwind, and settle in my new home. I am only sad to not be moving with my sweet cat, Lily. But in a way, I shall as I now have her ashes in a beautiful bamboo casket with her name on a plaque. Sorry, feeling a little tired. I fell asleep to the sound of your gentle voice, not once, but twice during this video! 🫣🥴🤷🏼‍♀️ That was once last night, and one in the early hours. I have now awoken for good this time at 5am and watched it once more, only this time, I got to the end! 😁 I have just discovered the ability of your lovely voice to soothe my frazzled nerves, so next time I am tired, but unable to sleep through fretting, or pain, I shall reach for one of your videos 😊 I hope you don’t feel offended by my falling asleep, it’s a first, yet enlightening event!! Oh dear…I have allowed my weirdo brain to go a wandering… 👋🏻 ciao my friend ❤️❤️❤️💤🖌🎨👩🏻‍🎨💤💤

Unfortunately, having a studio is an encouragement to stock new art supplies.... :) I wish you a lot of luck in your new home in your beautiful country! Thanks for your comment kind as usual. Take care, Elisabetta

Interesting. I have about half of these colours. I do like the dusk colours very much. Thanks for including so much information. I think I got a greenish umber recently but did not know it granulated. I really like the delicacy of real viridian, it makes nice water when diluted a lot. I absolutely love black iron oxide, what a versatile mixing colour it is and always gives interesting effects. Thank you for yet another interesting watercolour journey!

This is completely different as it’s not super granulating paint. It’s a selection of colours that are naturally granulating, so the final result is softer and less dramatic compared to Schminke. I quite like it!

@@WatercolorElisabettaThe cadmium reds I have are all granulating, only less so than the Schminke Horadam Volcano Red, so my best guess is that it's a natural property of the paint. Maybe less mulling is a factor? As with phthalo colours, which are, apparently, naturally granulating! Cool, right? Hence the W&N Aqua Green ☺️ I saw a handmade cadmium paint combined with zirconium somehow that granulates as intensely as the Volcano Red, so that seems to be a thing too! I'm really enjoying the granulation festival we're seeing in watercolours at the moment! 🎉😄
