My theory as to: a) why Granny and her family members hate each other so much, b) why the Master Craftsman's Son (Grog) was in the Lost Woods, and c) how Granny's family wound up where they are. A bit of a sad theory, but I do believe it to be the most logical explanation for what we see in-game. So, yes - this is a Granny theory, a Grog theory, and a Master Craftsman theory. Let me know what YOU think tore this family apart in the comments! Thank you for watching, and as always, stay tuned for more, my Hylians!

I liked the theory, there was only one thing that I kept thinking about. Isn't granny a y' know granny? As you stated it's weird for the craftsman to refer to his wife as "my old lady". I've never heard a couple call each other that, what I have heard however is people call their parents "my old man" for example. So doesn't it make more sense if granny is the craftsman's mother and (since they don't have a real name let's just go with Anju and Corg's) grandmother? Also makes more sense to call your grandmother an old hag and your grandson a lazy bum and a good for nothing fool, right?

Thanks for the comment! This is something I hadn't really questioned before, although it is a possibility. I was going off of what the Zelda Encyclopedia says, and every other source I checked (Zeldapedia, Zelda Dungeon, etc.) was in agreement that Granny was the Master Craftsman's wife. Ichiro, one of the carpenters, also hints at Granny's Potion Shop being where the Master Craftsman lives. And I'd also have to ask: if Granny is not the mother of Grog, then who is the mother he references in present tense? For simplicity's sake, I'll assert that Granny having been the Master Craftsman's wife is just another part of my theory, haha.

"Old Lady" was a term for "wife" or even "girlfriend" that was slightly popular in the United States during the sixties and seventies, but it's rarely used now. Having an older man like the Carpenter use a term from that era for his wife is something a game developer (or translator) from the nineties might do. Believe it or not, that term was actually meant as one of endearment, even though it does sound insulting. Does this mean the carpenter still views the potion lady as his partner, despite the divorce? Or are they still married? I don't know, but I got one other thing: Granny's pet is not a cat, exactly, it's a tiny tiger. A reference to a real life predator in Oot, but where else do we see a real life predator? The famously phony looking sprite of the shark in the old man's Lake Hyrule Lab. Merriam/Webster defines a Tiger as a "a fierce, daring, or aggressive person or quality" also "someone or something (such as a situation) that is formidable or impossible to control" It defines Shark as "a rapacious crafty person who takes advantage of others" and, fittingly, " one who excels greatly especially in a particular field"

I can think of only one issue with this theory, granny is a term for "grandmother" - meaning that she''s the mother of the master craftsman and the grandmother of the master craftsman's children (his son and daughter), unless you can explain Granny's (potion shopkeeper) apparent age as I think she's older than the master carpenter.

@@Retroatron Should have brought that up in the video, but I personally don't believe this particular theory. Why is the name Granny only referring to her shop? @@Retroatron I believe that’s likely an error by the encyclopedia, which has a ton. When the craftsman says “my old lady”, he could be referring to granny as his mother, because “my old man/lady” is commonly used to refer to parents. Also, granny is Anju’s grandmother in Majora, so they probably have a similar relationship in Ocarina, given that their ages are about the same between the counterparts in Termina.

You have have grown up in the city. In the city "my old lady" is an insult and that's because city folk use it to refer to their mothers or generally women older than them. In the country "my old lady" does refer to one's wife but is actually a term of endearment. I grow mostly in the city myself but my grandpa is a country boy and taught some terminology. By taught I mean he talks like that and I just learned from listening. My gf is also a country girl and confirms the terminology. When comes to the relationship between these 3 family members, the dad is a carpenter and the mom is a doctor. A carpenter will always see his son as "lazy" because there is no work more physically taxing than construction. Doctors, mainly ones that make medicine rather just subscribing and administering medical attention, always view other people as fools and idiots because of course they aren't going to be as smart as a doctor. So I always believed that they were strict and hard on their son. Putting a heavy burden of expectations on him and he rejected and resented them for their lack of actual parenting skills. Ever notice how you'd never know the Cuckoo lady is the sister if she hadn't said anything about it herself. The Carpenter and Granny only speak ill of their son but nothing at all about even having a daughter or a second child at all? I doubt Granny and the Carpenter are divorced but it's entirely possible the marriage is strained. Things like this aren't uncommon in the real world and typically is a result of the parents putting too much pressure on their kids. If you look up the term "tiger mom", it suddenly feels like the fur pattern of Granny's cat makes sense. You're theory was enjoyable to watch and the idea that Granny having an affair with the Lake Scientist is something I thought of before

Cheating is just a too common cliche. I would like to think that the Granny and Master Carpenter drifted apart and they weren't earning enough. Granny grew to resent her family because she was never able to earn enough by herself for her family to live off of. The Master Carpenter was always away but because he had a wife and kids to support, he wasn't as free as he wanted to be.

As someone who came from a very dysfunctional family, I don't think they are necessarily divorced, I believe they are just very distant from each other. I also think that granny knew her son had some kind of illness or something and her son knew he could be saved if he brought the mushroom to her, that's why she says that the potion won't be of any use for a monster (knewing he went to the forest and transformed into a Stalfos). Maybe one could argue their children's health could be the source of the disagreement, and the son being fragile and not able to work as his father wished was the source of father and son hate, while his mother not letting him go to the forest to pursue the cure was the source of hate between the two. You see she calls him stupid many times knowing what he've done. I think in the end she even cared for him a little.

Using the ending cut scene is pointless for any theory because Granny along with all the other people behind counters were rendered with out a lower body and couldn't be grouped together with any character that did have a lower body rendered. In addition her reused sprite was in a wheelchair so they wouldn't have to give her legs

It's an American thing, boomers especially refer to wives as "old lady"s. Heh, my grandpa used to refer to his first wife and my grandma would get so mad at him because he was referring to her, his first and only wife.

Is wench another word for prostitute? In the _Song Of Ice And Fire_ book series, aka Game Of Thrones, Jaime Lannister frequently calls Brienne "wench" despite knowing that she is a virgin. This is a story in which prostitution features heavily, and I can't think of any other character using that word to refer to actual prostitutes (Tyrion and Tywin prefer to use "whore" instead). So, I'm not too sure about that. It may just be a derogatory term applied to women in general.

That's the point. Wench is just another way of calling a woman a whore or a hoe. It's the same. An insult aimed at sexually.

Small note, "Old Lady" that Mutoh of the carpenters mentions is not Granny. The house near the box where you find the Cucuo in just at the base of stairs leading to Death Mountain that is his house, his wife is the rather large red haired woman in that house the one who often is cooking. Granny is literally his mom, I mean I don't judge Young old relationships, my dad was dating someone 10 years older than me and I was in my20s at the time he turns 60 this month. But look at her and tell me she isn't as old as Professor Farnsworth in Futurama. Plus "Old lady" when talking about your wife is a term of endearment, just as "Old man" if for the husband. You never heard couples call each other that? I have.

I like the theory and maybe they were divorced but one element of your theory is definitely wrong. You cannot make the point about him referring to her as his "old lady." It does not support your theory because in the south of the United States, in places such as Tennessee and Alabama and probably a few other places, there are minority groups of hick people who do use the term. "old lady." It refers to their wife and is not supposed to be derogatory. I don't like the usage of the term and I think most ppl around me in TN do t say it but I have met a fair amount of ppl in my life who regularly use this to refer to a wife. Women here also refer to their husband as "old man." You are not the only KZreadr to bring this term up and use similar reasoning to imply a character could not have been close to another character bc of this term but that is false bc it is used to refer to a significant other and the couples I know who use it are lifer those who don't divorce and often will nitpick or say sexist stuff to each other and to them it is all in good fun bc the relationship, in spite of this is not toxic. But there are trashy ppl who battle addiction etc who also use these terms and with them it might be more negative but the person is still a significant other that they either are with or they keep going back to. I am unsure I understand why sineine would say that a person is their old lady if it refers to an ex. Maybe I missed a context clue there but I believe this is most likely you being unfamiliar. We don't know all the slang from every part of the world and whoever made the translation wanted the family to seem more hick and obviously used these terms, but in the real world it does mean wife and is not usually meant as a bad thing and it is not something I have heard to refer to an ex.

Also: how does he know that the old lady there is actually his mother ? Do we know they are blood related at all for real? And what does the Japanese text and manuals (THE ACTUAL CANON) say?

Unsure I never looked into the family and the context clues of how he presented this, it did not seem to be a serious theory. It came across more like speculation that he dramatically told in a comedic way but I stand by the point of "old lady" being irrelevant and actually is a counterpoint to what he is saying as it absolutely is used in alerts if the United States to refer to a wife and usually one who is a lifer.
