Grandmother | 2-Op Analog FM Synthesis

This video explores how to achieve analog 2-operator FM synthesis using Grandmother.
In its simplest form, FM synthesis is a sound design method involving two oscillators, typically using sine waves, where one oscillator is used to modulate the frequency of a second oscillator in order to create a new timbre. Adjusting both the depth of that modulation and the harmonic ratio between the two oscillators can yield a wide array of different sounds, ranging from harmonic and musical, to inharmonic and alien.
While FM synthesis is most often associated with digital synthesizers, the all-analog Grandmother is capable of a wide range of FM tones by incorporating the filter and modulation oscillator as sound sources.

I've owned a lot of synths in the last 20 years but none of them enchanted me like the grandmother and her daughter.

cant say this is the most musical sound but is informative is revealing the grandmothers possibilities. fm in this context is cool for creating metallic like tones and the moving the modulation rate dial comes up with a lot of different sounds

Ooo nice sounds. This is a great spot to park the filter for pitch tracking too. The bypass to vca part of the patch is nessisary if you mix more sound sources in. Otherwise easier not to

So in theory, we can achieve a similar result with the Mother 32 since it also has a sequencer, an lfo and a self-resonating filter

  • @MoogSynthesizers

Well not quite, because the Mother 32's LFO doesn't work quite like the Grandmother's. The Mother-32's LFO doesn't offer a sine wave, and its CV input doesn't track at V/Oct. You'll be able to get in the ballpark, but it won't work exactly the same.

I love this series of videos, but I'm having trouble getting that metallic sound. Are any of the other knob settings critical? I can't really see them all very well in the video. Trying this out, I did get something that sounded like the Mario Bros. running sound, which was a win anyway! Thank you for any advice!

Hmm, it's hard to say. Make sure the filter's resonance knob is turned all the way up, and that you have a dummy cable patched to the input of the filter. The mixer's output is normalized to the filter input, so without the dummy cable you can get phase cancellations from the sinewave getting fed into itself, resulting in silence. If you still get nothing, try and reach out to our technical support staff for some help @ techsupport@moogmusic.com
