    I'm with you there hardfugoo. William Cheung's story as to how how he came into the "traditional" style of Wing Chun is actually an interesting and believable one. Considering the fact that people are now revering him as the true grandmaster of Wing Chun shows that he's either just a protege who doesn't want the credit or his story is true. I've been studying under his lineage for almost 10 years and it really is a very effective and phenomenal art.

    Wong Shun Leung was the best street fighter in Hong Kong, until he met Yip Mans Wing Chun, Wong was a boxer and kickboxer until he met Yip Man, Yip Mans lineage of Wing Chun is deadly it’s reason his style was versatile, Wing Chun is used for Health and self defense, also Bruce Lee never mastered the 6 forms of Wing Chun and really understanding it, why he mixed his Wing Chun with boxing, only reason why Bruce Lee was so good as a Martial Artist, was the self defense mechanism with Wing Chun, once you learn the counter and sparring that comes with it, it’s easy too beat anyone

    I'd love to hear the reasoning behind some of these people as to why they hate this man so much... is it just because their masters and friends say so? Whatever this man learned or may not have learned... it evolved into something. He grasped something that many long time practicing WC masters never learn. A practical side. Even if you argue this man's forms aren't true and his training was only half complete. What he teaches has turned into something true and effective. Arguably more so.

    Well. Looking at the fact that he helped to train Bruce Lee who used his wingchun in actual streetfights and tournaments there really is no question concerning if Grandmaster Chuengs Wing Chun is effective.

    true, its not so easy to hit the back of the head, but at the same time its not hard. even in UFC, the back of the head is illegal, as many opportunities to hit it arise. for example, during a good ground and pound. again, in my sparring i have this opportunity a lot--you have to set it up.

    In the 90’s, I remember William Cheung came to NY for a seminar because I was studying Wing Chun within ‘his traditional system’ under one of his top students. It started out as a nice seminar. Even Sifu Sonny Whittmore was attending and he was assisting. Well two things happened on that day which caused me to leave his supposed system. First, he was demonstrating a technique with Sonny. I don’t remember exactly which one but suddenly William nearly went over because Sonny did ‘something’ out of character with the pre-planned movements. Everyone immediately gasped as Sonny quickly stopped William from falling over. After saving him, there were some quick courtesy bows exchanged between the two and Sonny apologized. I always felt he did it purposely as a test. At the least… it created a doubt. But we moved on. Second- He was showing us how to defend against a sweep kick from behind where the attacker’s foot is basically hitting at the back of your foot’s heel. His solution was to quickly shift the foot. Well, my intuition light bulb went off, because as I imagined it happening in real time… as in… a FAST attack. I couldn’t get past the idea that you would be able to shift your foot quickly enough. By that time… you’d be on the floor is the way I envisioned it. Because it’s one thing in slow motion for a class demo but quite another in real life. So I politely asked him: “Sigung… how do you defend if it’s happening quickly?” (or something like that.) I don’t remember his answer, but it was basically: “It works… don’t worry about it.” A few minutes later while practicing the first form, he looked in my direction and said: “Everyone, remember… if you ask questions about this system… you don’t belong.” He OBVIOUSLY meant that for me. It was a little embarrassing. But it also pissed me off. I’m sorry… but this is America and I’m PAYING YOU $350. Needless to say… I now laugh at his phony system. Remember, this was back in the 90’s with no internet. My local teacher would tell us stories like: “William Cheung learned ‘special moves’ from Yip Man. They were only taught to HIM”. Apparently, when William lived with The Master, he was stirred from sleep and told things like: “Tan Sao… not like this… but THIS.” This was only for those DESERVING of the REAL WING CHUNG. This was the TRADITIONAL system. LMAO. It always smelled funny to me and I knew it was a PR stunt. To this day, it still goes on as to which Wing Chung is the real one. Doesn’t matter because it’s useless. Check on KZread “Wing Chun vs. MMA”. USELESS.

A person can grasp quickly to learn a form, but lacks the focus to use it to spar. And vise versa for another individual. Martial Arts also teaches one to be calm, especially WC and since you have shared your opinion which I thankyou for it, your spark of firey attitude needs some attention.

    +mightymeatmonsta Stop being silly! William Cheung was very easily beaten by a then novice Emin Boztepe in 1986 - a novice easily beating a supposed Grandmaster! Now did William ask for a rematch after that? No he shut up for good & stopped making his silly claims in public (Emin had warned him if he did not shut up, he'd come & do the same again). William Cheung could not fight sleep & it is obvious his terrible Wing Chun has no relevance to as real modern day street fight. The Grandmaster got his ass kicked using that B.S. against a novice in Wing Tsun, what makes you think it is going to work for you in the street?

  • @mightymeatmonsta

    @mightymeatmonsta

    No, he didn't. The Grandmaster was turned and walking away when Boztepe jumped him from behind. I remember seeing the video when it first came out. It was soon edited to take out the part of him turning and walking away to make it look like it was a fair fight. If he had a problem with the Grandmaster, then they should have settled it the right way. In a closed room, just the two of them, with some witnesses. The way he did it was just disrespectful and a sign of desperation for someone who was losing students to Cheung, along with a lot of other modified schools. If they had faced off, man to man, face to face, not back to face, then Boztepe wouldn't have lasted one minute with the Grandmaster, who had almost 50 years experience at that time. He was just a coward, who know he couldn't beat the Grandmaster face to face.

    It HAS, when it first came out, but they took it down and edited it to look like they were facing each other. That can easily be done by any editing program. I can't. They took it down and the REAL unedited version disappeared. It was up for a couple of months before they edited it. Yes, they faced off, then the Grandmaster said he didn't want to fight him, and turned and walked away. No, he NEVER lost students. In fact, it was the other way around. That's why this whole thing was set up because he was stealing students from all the modified wing chun schools and all of the modified douchebags didn't like that and wanted revenge on him. • @Crazy93SG
    @Crazy93SG8 жыл бұрын

    To be honest, even if these are just technique demonstrations, it is unrealistic. Frozen partner is one of the failures in wing chun training, since it teaches student that the opponent does not pull his fist back after punch. A real person fighting against you pulls his fist back to punch again, meanwhile you are closing in and trying to block with pak and punch with other arm, he will pull his fist back and punches fast again. You have to be extremely fast to do it. Since if Cheung is more about street fighting, how come he teaches this, since it has no purpose on street fight situation. Yea I know he changed the form because of the "street" realm, but only real thing I see in his Siu Nim Tao is the wu sao which is higher protecting the head as it should. The only problem is that he brings that Wu Sao just too close to his body which creates possibility of grappling and jamming the arm there, Wu Sao should never be so close. So at least he can't say he is doing traditional wing chun, if he changed forms and says its street effective. What is this contradiction between his own statements. In our Wing Tsun schoold we do drills, but don't use million technique to penetrate the center line. In some parts cheung seems to chase more of his hands than his weak oints, which is not Wing Chun. Real wing chun/tsun is about the most simple way to defeat your opponent by destroying the center while absorbing opponents force. Here we just see some random hand techniques he perform on opponents frozen arm mostly. Where is the hip power, or the power from spinal movement in techniques? All the basic techniques create power from down to upward motion, not with frozen back and stillness. And in his wooden dummy form, why there is that stupid crane step where he lift the leg up and move to dummy same time. You shouldn't lift your leg expect while kicking and with steps slightly. Some many things he do are not entirely correct according the principles of wing chun. All the applications in video are some way very unrealistic if you concider street fighting. No opponent will freeze like that with their limbs if they are determined enough to attack on you. And the way he blocks the kicks, jeez he's only going go the his hands hurt this way if the kicker knows how to kick a little bit. Especially if you use your palms against kick, many things can go wrong. Even though I don't support hatred in martial arts, which wing chun schools have much between one other, he is bad. Far from real self defense. I don't care about challengin fights etc, but I would say our Dai-Sifu would beat him easily as our Master in my country. And hell, Wong Sheung Leung Wing Chun is closest to Ip Man and more realistic than this stuff, he is respect by many Wing Chun masters and professionals. I've made my statement, I don't start with the "secret" techniques and "only student to learn traditional wing chun" stuff, but this video shows nothing but unrealistic drills.

    bunch of crap as always... come to BJJ to see what happens...

    Wow, bjj in many principals is a young cousins of Wing Chun’s and for open ground areas. Wing Chun is for close quarter fighting, and much faster then bjj. BJJ is a wresting system made for small person to out think the other person in a fast submission regardless of size. All while reserving energy. Same in Wing Chun a standing trapping and striking then grappling system were energy is received and allowing the practitioner to return incoming force onto the attacker. I move my tan sau into a low guard bong sau and back up ti tan fast enough to hardly see it and just hear wind. No joke, in fact I find that and other moves often move so fast they make wiping noise. You bend over to drive in we set a side and low guard onto you neck and then pull down and push face to ground hard! BJJer closes in fast, Chunner sweeps legs out by doing a tan across neck one direction and leg sweep low the other direction. WC wrap arms fast, WC slaps on a rear blood chock on super fast as it literally wipes around neck and tightens so fast from moving quickly to the blindside. BJJer comes in for one leg drop Chunner, wraps leg around back of neck as they slip back to let head over commit and then lift leg quickly over head down onto neck. Trapping in WC is key, trapping key, fighting within a safe distance either back waiting for attacker or to move in closely to make there power weaker, both similar ideas. I like to see BJJ done in a public washroom were there is urinals counter, partition walls, toilets, hand dryers in the way and a tiled floor. Plus it is a night club and their are three of them and none are too drunk all are hyper street fighters. Wing Chun then is your best friend as BJJ is not intended for this very real life type of fight. Happens in ever club at least once a month. A fight on a subway or bus not and it is two guys with knives, BJJ not the best in that situation. Go into a large octagon ring with safe pads and ground. Chunner brings out an offering arm in guard, oh no frying arm bar and down to ground into ground control mount with legs wrapped, and moves upward around upper body spins into crucifix, and sets up the kamora, and tap tap tap BJJ wins! Wing Chun works in many true life situations, and when when done right, moves extremely fast. Guy with knife tan sau whipping down into a trapping bong sau and gauging both eyes with darting fingers of other hand, hits onto forearm a stunning pak sau of a hard closed phenix eye fist and and hand flys open, do to involuntary reaction. Why pressure points, in which both these distant “cousin” disciplines use!

    +Brian McComas Stances? Again he has their reasons for them. ''Kick my nuts'' - most stances don't hide them, besides if you had experience in real fights you'd know not easy to hit there anyway especially against a moving target. Look at say Leung Ting in Wing Tsun with 100% of weight on back leg stance, they have their reasoning for it, others would say it is ridiculous & not practical. I've no doubt William Cheung could beat you then pull down your underpants & play the bongo drums on your bare butt cheeks.

    Brian McComas. It is icredible how many of you are so sick and ignorante about martial arts and WC. You back up your truth with the Emin Boztepe fight!??... A perfect Young man, that already had many years of martial arts training. Young, fit, and some years of WT...plus eager to be somebody and show his loyalty to LT and KK!!??? On the other side, William Cheung Sifu, a man many years older, a father, somebody who could not believe that this was happening and felt ashamed of this situation and holding back this embarrassing situation, trying in one second, to realice what the heck was happening...was this serious!? Now William Cheung vs young Emin... You think that's fight, because that fall you are going to put down a SENIOR WING CHUN TEACHER.... OR WHO EVER. THAT my friend can happen to anyone!...even other great teachers/ fighters had their bad day. SO HE FELL, with a Young tough man with: ONE REASON in his mind, on top...that was it...2 minutes...and that was the fight, that's W CHEUNG'S wing chun or Emin's Leung Ting wing tsun!???... GROW UP BRIAN. NOW LISTEN 2..why sifu W. Cheung did not ask for a rematch?...well maybe because he is not like Emin, Keith K...and Leung Ting. another reason is because perhaps he just sat down and observed with a broken heart if one of his advanced student would defend the Honor of his Sifu !? no one did, why?!? who knows...martial arts is more than BULLYING. Maybe he told everybody to chill out.THE SAD PART...Leung Ting used this fight for his advantage and KKerns...? what ever, did a great marketing out of this. Again Brian and others. Grow up!! 3, about the wing chun...many many teachers get to their own conclusions. Ip Man's WC is not like the one he learned..he made his changes to make HIS OWN KUNG FU. His feeling, his aroma...like many others, many kung fu teachers, karate teachers, etc etc...even the famous bjj once was basic judo!!! and Helio put his feeling out of it. William Cheung's Wing Chun is the way he likes and understands HIS Kung Fu...it is his expression...YOU DO YOURS AFTER LEARNING WHAT EVER YOU DO, if you can!??..now...the good thing...nowdays, you have many WING CHUN WING TSUN VING TSUN... to choose or to mix or to delete or to .... again, third time... GROW UP AND train.Hes's 74/75...he hasn't quitted!!! he's still there sharing, training, giving, supporting, and working and getting the rice and the soup on his table...so...what ever you are AND who ever you are...LEARN TO BE A GENTLEMAN AND A REAL KUNG FU MAN. 4...SO HE DID HE WAS GREAT, SO HE SAID IN THE 70'S AND 80'S HE WAS GREAT...there is a reason for this too. He said it because he was telling in a way to the world that he was a fighter, a roof fighter in HK, he was also Bruce's friend, he stood up to the name of wc and yip man whe the clf and other schools were defeating them...so what...he was Young...everybody when their Young have moments of ego. PS: I'M NOT A WILLIAM CHEUNG STUDENT...but after training for 39 years, wing chun, kyokushin, aikido, and kajukenbo...We can all learn something from this Sifu. Joseph

    +Joseph William Cheung issued the challenge himself = he said he was the best fighter in Wing Chun, should anyone doubt it - they could come & try him anytime. He had said that many many times in interviews (incl. in UK based magazine 'Combat' - which Emin had a copy of when he challenged Cheung). Cheung sadly had started believing his own hype that he was some great fighter, he never was beyond fairy tale stories of fighting 20 people at one time on a boat etc. It is important to be clear = Cheung issued the challenge. Emin was 24/35 then & Cheung around 45/46, age is no excuse when you are ''the best fighter in Wing Chun'', besides if attacked in the street - please don't hurt me Mr Mugger I'm a little older than you. Regarding Cheung's claims - Master of Di Mak Death Touch LOL!!!!! = well he never used it on Emin! Regarding his history & Ip Man etc please read : cheungswingchuntruth.blogspot.co.uk/ then draw your own conclusions.

    Silly talk. Try this in the MMA ring and you will see reality. No one is going to charge in for a takedown and stop right there for you to chop him up. In a choreography like this, yes, it works beautiful. But it will never work against a trained fighter. It's very simple, talk is cheap. Just sign the contract and enter the octagon for your lesson. You will likely throw out everything you have ever learned about Wing Chun and realize its limitations within a minute.

  • @gentlemangentleman6787

    Wing Chun is useless. These useless theories or techniques done with a cooperative partner with no resistance looks good in a choreograph video. On the street, any street fighter, boxer, MMA fighter, Mui Tai fighter, just about anybody can beat a typical Wing Chun guy. To prove your merit, it's simple. Just step in the octagon. Talk is cheap and is an insult to those who truly ply their martial arts skill in the ring, day in day out. Wake up all you Wing Chun practitioner. You are wasting your time. If you don't believe, just spar with a boxer, I mean a real boxer, not some guy who has trained for two months like those you often see in made up videos to show that Wing Chun is credible. It is useless. I have been a martial artist for 50 years and studied many different types of fighting concepts. None is more useless than Wing Chun in general.....other than those who is willing to modify it based on its limitation.
