'Grand Theft Auto III' - RETROSPECTIVE.
Ойындар
Do you remember the first time you ever laid your eyes on Grand Theft Auto III? What about the first time you actually drove through the streets of Liberty City yourself, experiencing the sights and sounds of everything this world had to offer? How did you find out about the cheats? All weapons and ammo, full health and armor, spawn a tank. Man, the tank. Where were you? When was that? Grand Theft Auto III is immortal. It’s a piece of art that changed an entire industry, and initially… the people making it had no idea what they had on their hands. From the initial 2.5D concept stages, to the struggles of structuring a world this large that wouldn’t collapse on itself, we’re about to dive into the blood and guts of it all. This is Six Stars in Liberty City - A Grand Theft Auto III Retrospective.

I can't wait for the Spiderman and San Andreas retrospective series' San Andreas was my introduction to GTA and I have a fun memory from it 😄 as with spiderman, we'll I grew up with him as my favorite super hero alongside the likes of batman and superman like most people I'm sure but the Raimi films just hits home for me and it sets the standards of what a basic super hero movie should be 😌😎🔥 (I still really wish we got a 4th one 😢)

I was 15 at the time and watching Raw with my mom and we both were stunned by the game. I had a PS2 and when we saw the commercial my mom looked at me and said “Next payday, we are getting that game. I want to play that!” And I’ve been a GTA fan ever since.

You have a great mom.
This game really defined the open world sand box genre of video games. Incredible how much this franchise been evolved over the past 23 yrs since this came out. It got me excited to plat GTA6 next year.
I spent so much time in Liberty City in 2001-02 that I'm pretty sure Ilived there... hey, that's my apartment window you're shooting at!
Appreciate the use of the Smackdown Shut Your Mouth OST. Few headbangers on there!
I love his use of smackdown music in non wrestling videos. 😂
I worked at Blockbuster Video at this time and I rented a PS2 for only 3 games WWF Smackdown Know your role, Legends of wrestling and GTA3 (only after the hype got me)
0:36 I can easily tell you this. The first time I heard about it was the beginning of 2002. My older brother came back from Chicago and our cousin told him about this game. So my brother went and bought it and he played for a while and then that was that. I picked it up and I been a fan of the GTA ever since. The memories of just grinding the game, getting wasted countless times(I thought that after so many times the game would restart). I was 13 at the time and it just blew me away with the freedom you have in this game. I remember times of having to either play all the way through in one sitting or letting the PS2 run overnight to finish this game. At the time I didn’t complain much about having to restart hard missions from the start when you fail because this was the first game in the 3D series and I didn’t have a checkpoint feature. Who all remembers the Brady Games strategy guide era? I bought one, well my mom did, I remember taking it to school and reading about missions further in the game(I wasn’t close to getting off of Portland). The countless hours of reading forums about secrets, learning about bulletproof vehicles, and cheats. I beat this game on PS2 at least 15 times and more times since then. This game may not hold up now because many games have built of the formula of GTA III but I do not tolerate GTA III slander lol, the atmosphere is very unique. No other game I feel has captured the sheer dreary, coldness of a city like GTA III. It’s easily one of my favorite games ever. I still learn about different things almost 23 years later. Your retrospective did my favorite GTA justice.
Honestly would love to see a The History of GTA series. Great job bro

My buddy and I were 11 when it came out and I slept over his house the night GTA III released. I had only ever seen/played the original GTA games for PSX at that point, but knew GTA III was gonna be real different. I watched as my friend begged his father ALL DAY to bring us to the mall so he could get the game, and he finally gave in and brought us. Ahh, the good ol' day.

Yeah and im good nvr got in trouble for bein violent because of video games common sense
My first memory of GTAIII I was at a friends house in around 2001 or so, after playing baseball. He always had a new/different game at his house and he was playing GTAIII. I was glued to the game and the eventual series. Til this day I will always remember R2, R2, L1, R2, left, down, right, up, left, down, right, up
Ya know what’s funny? I just got the the remastered collection for Christmas, slept on this game for such a long time I didn’t even know the collection was all in HD, fired up GTA3 first, because of course I did. Finished two missions and started rampaging like I did in the good ol’ days. Me and my cousins, at a sleepover, with our Pepsi and pizza and chicken nuggets or whatever, laughing or asses off until his dad came downstairs, always while we were like setting a prostitute on fire or some shit, looking at us while we froze, saying you guys are nuts, then grabbing a Labatt Lite and going back upstairs. I miss those days. Anyways, what’s funny was Ian starting the retrospective with the story that he didn’t do the missions either. I’ve only seen all of Liberty City once, when my cousin showed me cause he completed the game, he was the one in our group who did that, the rest of us couldn’t be bothered lol. So I thought it was always just me who slept on the whole campaign and just blew shit up. Cheers Ian, to blowing shit up, stealing the tank, and forgetting about the entire rest of the game 🤘🏻❤️
I didn't have a PS2 at the time, so I remember playing it in my buddie's college dorm room, well, i should say watching it because he wanted to beat the game and do all the side missions and didn't want me rampaging and ruining that. SO we compromised, we set up a separate save file so I could rampage to my heart's delight. Thanks for the Retrospective.
When you mentioned the part when gangs shoot you on sight, nothing is more annoying than the Mob when you go through that part of the first island. They use shotguns that almost immediately explode your car or kill you. Lol I loved this game though, it was such a revolution and has a special place in my memories. I was 15 at the time, got it for Christmas.
This was a fantastic retrospective on GTA III. While I never played this one as a kid, when I first played it back in 2021 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this game and the PS2 trilogy as a whole, I was blown away by everything. The full scale of Liberty City, the sh*tload of ways you can cause chaos, and everything else in an early PS2 game of all things, I legit couldn’t believe my eyes. While yeah, the visuals of the OG haven’t aged well, they didn’t distract me away from the gameplay which was great. The story was fun too despite the confusing way it handles progression and that. But overall, while I may have been late with this one, I truly enjoy this game and I can see why a lot of people love this one. While my favorite will forever be San Andreas, GTA III will forever be special, no matter what. Lastly, I loved that you used SmackDown Shut Your Mouth’s soundtrack in this video, Ian😅. So much nostalgia and I love it😁. Amazing one today DanDan, and I hope you and all the other DanDans have a very nice and fun weekend, stay safe, and I love you all😊❤️.
This game is the most influential of all time for me personally. The music pretty much shaped my music taste and my two favourite cars in the game (Mafia Sentinel & Infernus) I ended up buying their real life counterparts (metallic black BMW M5 and a satin black Lamborghini Huracan) and lived out my fantasy of going at silly speeds to Slyder - Neo (The One) and Omni Trio - First Contact. It also pushed me to love anything in the movie industry defined as "crime" or "mafia". I love the other GTAs particularly Vice City and San Andreas but something about GTA III just makes it so perfect.
GTA: 3 blew me away when I first saw the commercial, I loved that game.
Great job Ian. GTA III is one of my all time favorite games. I had to wait until 2002 to get this one on PC myself because I didn’t have a PS2. The checkpoint system was not in the original game. When you died in mission you lost weapons and some cash and had to drive back to the mission restart point. For the definitive edition, I preordered and enjoyed it (I guess I did at least seeing that I have 100% completion in all 3) once they patched them. They have done a lot of good even though they are still missing custom radio stations on PC which was a staple off this era of GTA games, but I feel they play about as well as can be expected seeing that Rockstar North has lost most of their compitent business people and had a mobile game developer make the ports. Going to back to the originals are a little rough at this point, because the game and controls feel a little sluggish.
I remember the 1st time I seen gta3 like it was yesterday. Christmas day 2001. My little brothers friend gifted him that and he called me into his room to show me it. I was blown away and hooked!! I played the game to death. Had to keep bridging my little bro to bootie his ps2 as I didn't have one. Happy days.
ManHunt was another masterpiece by Rockstar!! I love those games. This was a great retrospective, it took me back.
Oh i like seeing this, a GTA Series Retrospective in preparation for GTA 6? Sweet. (if this is the case, you will skip 1 and 2?) *BTW, great seeing that you want to do a THPS one too
Tips and tricks magazine is where I got my cheat codes back in the day 😊
The first time I ever saw GTA3 was at a friend's house. I was not an early adopter of the PS2 like yourself Ian, I actually got the PSOne (the mini console) before getting a PS2. A couple of my friends did have PS2's though and they had GTA3. I actually never owned the game myself and consumed it exclusively through going to my friend's houses. We spent a lot of time playing this game together and it was also a sleep over staple for us. We'd constantly switch between GTA3 and WWF No Mercy. We'd do the same RAMPAGE thing, passing the controller to the next guy once we inevitably got killed. Despite liking the game enough, I actually didn't own and fully play through a GTA game til IV.
So many great memories of this game and the radio stations were incredible sometimes I would just sit there and listen to chatterbox that was my favorite one and could always make me laugh
Unfortunately I don’t have any fond memories of GTA3. San Andreas was my first exposure to the franchise but I will be forever grateful to this game for the way the other gta games that followed came into existence. Great review!
I was 15 when I first saw GTA 3. It was on one of those new articles. Gave me flashes of when MK 3 was everywhere and blamed for everything it seemed.
I still remember it.. I was off at College and I saw a trailer playing at a FutureShop store (RIP), and saw that it was coming out in a couple weeks. I then went to Blockbuster (RIP) and I reserved a copy to rent when it came out. I rented it for 2 months.. and then Blockbuster shut down and I just got the copy of GTA3 because they didn’t want it back, told me to just keep it.
I remeber playing this for the first time at one of my moms friends houses. I just drove around in a limo pretending i was rich, which makes no sense since I was driving it lol
I have the same memories of GTA 3. Watching Raw or SmackDown and the commercial would play. And just like you, we didn’t even own a PS2 at the time. Only a PS1. Then when I moved from Chicago to Delaware, that’s when we got the PS2. Unfortunately, I never purchased GTA 3, only played like 20 minutes of it at a friend’s house. But I did buy Vice City when I was 14. It was $20 in birthday money.
I was 13 when GTA 3 came out. I rented it from the local rental store that was super small, and randomly realized they had it one day when I was looking for games when I got my PS2. I had a few other games that I owned, but getting to rent and play 3 was fucking awesome. I was a major fan of GTA 1 and GTA 2, and used to play 2 all the time on Dreamcast. 3 is pretty barebones and basic, but it's still a pretty smooth and fun playing game. Seeing this 3D version of GTA was so damn cool as a kid. It was like playing Driver 2 only not janky and totally glitchy as hell. This is an awesome video, Ian. Same with me, I literally hardly played the story as a kid, and was only in the first city like the majority of my time playing the damn game. Lol
I love your retrospective videos, Halfway tempted to just buy enough patreon spots so you can go ahead with the San Andreas retrospective lol.
This game is responsible for my current gaming addiction. It came out when I was a senior in high school. I played it at my buddy's house one day, the next day I got a PS2 and GTA3. It was the only game I had until Vice City.

God, the ps2 era of GTA was unreal. My dad, my brother and myself spent so many hours on these games. Messing around, driving like maniacs, going on rampages, playing with the various cheat codes and going to areas we weren't supposed to yet. Good times, man. Great video, man! Cheers! 🍻
Another great video!

Tips & Tricks Back then I barely bothered to play a game if I couldn't use cheats. My older sister was the main one who wanted GTA 3. I liked the trailer, though. She played that game til the disc got worn.
Best review thus far keep up the good work 🤝
I can remember a bunch of my teammates talking about gta 3, I was in high school and never heard of the first 2 lol. I was mostly sport’s and fighting games but this one definitely caught my interest after I decided to grab it. And like you said homie I’ve never quite played a game like this at the time.
Dude this was the game bro, the game that got me into open world games💯 GTA3 changed so much in what I expected in video games as far as open world! Great video my dude💯 #ThanksForWhatYouDo #WeAreTheDanDans #MuchLove #GTA3
My only experience with GTA 3 is the commercial. Made me feel like I was watching a mafia movie. Wouldn't actually play a GTA game until Vice City at a cousin's house
Man that wwf toy ring commercial took me back 😮
Super Mario World and Gta 3 were the first 2 games i've ever played lol. I was only 3 years old but I have an older brother and he would let me play whatever. As a kid all I would do is drive on the sidewalk and mow people down and use the cheat code to change the character model. Honest to god some of my very first memories. Gta is goated.
It's insane how they decided to break gaming with the type of scope this had when you go back and watch the making of GTA 1/2. It doesn't seem like a huge studio at the time, some dudes from England making a 2D over-the-top game... then they were going to have to repeat this and become bigger each and every time from there. It must have been so much developmental pressure packed into that old box.
Oh yeah was hoping a gta retrospective would be achieved thanks ian for your hard work and everyone that helped make this possible
Forgot to add the story when I first saw this game. I walked into my buddies house, knowing that his dad had just bought him the new ps2 I had to check it put and there it was.. On the screen of that old school TV playing was GTA3. After that moment, my gaming life changed forever👍
I read about GTA 3 before I ever saw it. I played 1,2, and London a bunch on a friends PC when they were newer, and I subscribed to EGM back then. So I knew it was coming. The first time I saw it I was 21 years old. It was maybe a month after release when I was at a buddies house buying a bag of weed... His brother was playing it, but I didn't know what the game was. It became clear as day what game he was playing when I saw him pull off a drive-by with the drivers side door open, finish dumping the clip, and peel off... then Claude grabbed the door and flung it closed as he drove off. The animation was so smooth, so... lifelike. I had never seen anything like it before. It really was one of the defining moments of my "gaming life". I said right then and there "well, that's that... I need to buy this game!" I did, about a week later, and the rest is history. Its a shame how GTA V ended up mostly being a shark card shilling cash grab... cus up until then, R* could do no wrong. Every GTA game has been excellent... even the off-shoots like Vice City Stories, or DLC like "Episodes from Liberty City" were all top quality single player experiences. GTA IV even had a great online component. They ruined the single player experince with GTA V... and I'm worried that there will be even LESS single player content for GTA VI. Though I do hope I'm wrong. Fucking EXCELLENT retrospective here, my friend. Well done. Can't wait for the Vice City video!
i like how joey is voiced by Michael Rappaport who also voiced troy Bradshaw from saints row 1 and 2

The first time I played GTA III was at a buddy's house back in 2001. I never heard of the game before but as soon as I started playing it I loved it. Not long after I got my own PS2 and got the game myself. I was 20 years old at the time. I'm 43 yrs old now and I'm still playing GTA.
I was always a Vice City guy. Honestly was not a fan back in the day when I first played it growing up. This video makes me want to give it another shot
Another banger ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ banger retrospective by you
I always loved the radio stations in GTA as well, especially the talk stations (Vice City and Vice City Stories being my faves). 3 introduced us to Lazlo, that annoying fan hound lol
I was 14 when this game came out, and like you Ian, I first saw the commercial for the game during Smackdown back in 2001. For whatever reason, it didn’t appeal to me (and boy, was I dumb). My friends and I formed our first band around this time, and my bass player friend had convinced his mom to let us play at his family Christmas party (we were terrible, unless you like 20 minute mistake-ridden vocal-less renditions of Metallica’s Enter Sandman and Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, and his family was too kind to entertain us). I was glad I was there because my friend’s uncle gave him a copy of GTAIII for Christmas. He ripped it open, threw it in the PS2, and the rest is history. We were absolutely blown away by what we experienced, so much so that I quickly called my parents to ask if I could sleep over because I didn’t want to leave and miss a second of this game. The subsequent weeks had plenty of sleepovers, where we’d pass the controller around and take turns with rampages, trying to ramp up our wanted level to 6 stars and seeing how long we could last. To this day, I’ve still never beaten the game (further proving your point that the game’s story is a secondary feature), but I can count on one hand the number of video games in existence that I have more vivid and fun memories than the ones I have with this game. Thanks for bringing me back to a simpler time with this one Ian. Excellent work as always.
I was 17 in 2001 when this was released, I owned a PS2 and had such a hard time finding it because it was selling out everywhere like hotcakes. But of all places I bought it for the first time at a Toys R Us which was ironic considering it was rated M for mature 😂 but what an amazing game. Me and my best friend played the entire game all the way through in 1 weekend awesome times. Of course finding the infamous cheat codes online, because my friend happened to have a computer and internet access. Awesome video Ian 👍🏻👍🏻
Im glad our parents let us play these lmao. My mom was cautious but she knew i wasnt over there huffin farts thinking i can do these things IRL xD
I owe my discovery of GTA 3 thanks to two different sources. My gym trainer and the game State of Emergency. When State of Emergency got released by Rockstar it had lots of controversy cause it was simulating rioting. I owned the game and loved the chaos fun it had and was chatting about it to my gym trainer who then began telling me about Grand Theft Auto 3 and he asked if I owned that game. And he told me about how you could drive tanks, helicopters, steal cars, punch people, do all this crazy stuff and how I needed to own this game. Sure enough, I did get it and I was gobsmacked about how much freedom you had in the game. GTA3 was also my GTA debut as I had never played the original PS1 games before.
I remember randomly playing gta3 at my cousin's house over xmas week when it came out. I wouldn't get to play it until a buddy of mine got it later on
Yeeeees! Let’s gooooo!!!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🔥
You're right. Parents should enforce what games their kids play and let them know that it's just a video game and it's not real
A thing of beauty GTA 3 is
After Salvatore Leone gets whacked by Claude, the Leone goons in St. Mark’s District start blasting Claude with shotguns which is a nasty hassle if players want to do stuff in Portland like completing missions and collecting packages!
Poppa dandan stay making amazing content
Damn same here my first exposure to this game was on a commercial during smackdown! And of course game informer 😅
Kinda ashamed to admit I didn't beat GTA 3 till the definitive edition I tried so many times on the PS2 for ages I was stuck on the damn racing mission and yes the other missions were pretty hardcore as well hated that one where you have to collect those 3 cars in like 5 minutes trying not to bump it but those cartel guys always shoots making you go to the pay n spray took me awhile to beat that one haha but it was still a fun time when not trying to complete the story. I Didn't play it at release either didn't know about GTA tiill Vice City somehow laterI got that GTA double pack and got GTA 3 that way I didn't even know about SD Just Bring It till after I already got Shut Your Mouth with my PS2 Christmas 02 best one I had but anyways I'm getting caught up in my nostalgia too love the videos Ian been subbed for years now keep doing your thing man.

PS: the game is a 10/10 and even for today's standards I was surprised by the number of small details they took the time to include.
God I miss sleepovers. Pizza, soda, and GTA/Here Comes The Pain all night until we pass out in the morning hours. Why dont we have more sleepovers as adults? Normalize that shit and bust out the old PS2 with the boys
I got this for christmas from my mom along with my ps2 and was hooked, I played the shit out of Driver 2 on ps1 for its open world and the ability to leave your car and steal another, but it was very bare bones. This was everything I was hopeful Driver 2 would be! I still do play this one, I time to time will do a GTA-3D universe play through of the games in order they are on the time line so Vice City Stories, Vice City, San Andreas, Liberty City Stories and finally GTA3 and always have a good time in all of them.
Hell yeah retrospective daddy 🤤
The 1st time I saw GTAIII was when I was 11 years old in a local gaming magazine called Bonus in November 2001. The reviewer gave it raving review (all 5s) & even then by looking at low-res pics, I thought that the game looked really ugly. The 1st time I played GTAIII was in September 2002 when I got my PS2 & GTAIII was one of the 1st games I got for the system. I started playing it & after sometime I turned it off & I thought to myself "this game is trash & how did it earn all 5s?". Sometime later, in early 2003 I gave it another chance & as I was playing it, it started to grow on me. The amount of freedom the game gives you was never seen before GTAIII. You can be a fixer, fire fighter, paramedic, taxi driver or vigilante. You can do Rampage missions, collect packages, do stunt jumps. The story is not perfect & has it's ups & down, but the side characters are colorful & give Claude some sense of personality. The game become my GOTY for 2001. On the side note, Ian, you forgot to mention all the stuff that was cut out because on 9/11 attacks. Nonetheless, a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ retrospective Ian-Boy. Can't wait for GTA:VC retrospective
We weren't allowed to play gta 3 at the time 10 years old. But we got good at the 1st hour and a half and could consistently take out the don. Never got to save. Vice city came out at when i was 12 and by then parents didn't care.
Walking into Blockbuster and seeing about 40 copies of GTA III.
The tank! He'll yea the tank. My favorite thing to do was to drive forward point the cannon backwards & hold down the fire button. With each shot propelling you faster and faster seemingly infinitely lol. & Would go until they were able to stop me lol, so much chaos & havoc lol
You never forget the 1st time you played GTA 3 in your life.
This Chanel is 🐐'd
unlock memeories i never knew i had 💜
My oldest nephew introduced me to gta lll I had vice city liberty city stories and san andreas
I remember my mom taking me and my brother to blockbuster to rent a ps2 and GTA, back when you could rent the whole damn console and we didnt have a memory card so we left it turned on for 2 weeks straight praying the power didnt go out or anything to lose all our progress
Never got far into 3, which is weird because I was aware of how big a shift it was. I guess I was too busy with Shenmue 2
Many, many memories of GTA III, I specifically remember how frequently the trailer would play on G4. I remember how much my parents opposed getting me and my siblings the game, and when they finally did cave in, my Dad INSISTED us kids stay in the car, cause he didn't want the employees knowing he was buying it for us. (One of my parent's acquaintances had played the game gave my parents false info about the gameplay, really skewing their perception of it.)
16:00 the best open world in 2001 was and still is Shen Mue 2!!!
I loved this game when it came out. i was already an adult, 23 years old, then so that wasn't a problem. But yea I agree, parents should be parent and shouldn't let the government do that job for them. But I pretty much did the same thing you did. I would do a story mission than during the off time I would go on a rampage and see how far I can go before I'm "Wasted". The first two games were cool, but I didn't like the controls and lost interest over time. Thought the perspective was jarring. But GTA III putting the game in third person view made the series better, IMO.
