2001: The Greatest Year in Gaming

Ойындар

A couple years ago, I made a video about how 1998 was the greatest year in video games. But if there's one other year that could put up a fight, it'd be 2001, the dawn of a new generation of games on new hardware, including the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube.

The graphics were _so good_ around this era. They struck the right balance between creative art design, semi-realism and cartoony 'game-like' graphics. They had detail _and_ charm, not like the ultra-realistic boredom of today. Early 3D worlds have such a surreal, dreamlike feeling to them - it's really cool.

i still remember my father calling my high school to ask to speak to me like something was wrong and instead asking me if we had a ps2. I told him yeah we do and when he got home that night he handed me a copy of GTA 3 he had bought on the way home. He heard about it on the radio and thought it sounded really funny. He sat and watched me play for a bit to figure it out and then asked me to show him how. He laughed his head off just screwing around in the city for like 30 minutes and then never touched it again.

PS2 was the consoles that turned over most people to gaming. Before that gaming was considered cringe. I remember even by mentioning to a girl that you like games they erased all interest in you at that moment XD Parents and girls had this image of a man who likes games is not man enough. PS2 pretty much changed people. And sadly that was the last platform that actually had gaming involved. A modded PS2 was my 1st PC so as with tons of emulation options most of us didn't needed anything else. The only reason I needed a PC was for rendering video data and play Sims2, everything else was done on consoles.

@@minmogrovingstrongandhealthy Its crazy how people seem to want to erase that aspect of our past culture. Today everyone says they are gamers and whatnot. Back on the day, on the 80s and 90s, saying you liked games (no one would even use the term "gamer") would get you bullied and girls would roll their eyes indeed. But now, oh no, everyone has always been a gamer. Haha right.. I'm really glad currently it is very diverse, but let's not forget that it was NOT like that in the past.

Yeah nowadays most people in the west have this fad going on online I see they have in their bio "I love Nintendo, my fav games are Pokemons, Zelda, Super Mario" especially streamers in past 3-4 years basically have this. It's some new fad and it's funny and sad at the same time XD The thing is most stores don't even sell these. And most these people didn't grow up on such things and still don't know wtf any of the things they say they "love" actually know what even is. XD I don't mind someone genuenly liking those mentioned games but damn, from millions of other great games out there I find it hard that they only find these generic cringe titles as their "favorites" like nothing else exist I think the outbreak made people more crazy then before ... @@Daniel__Nobre

Back in 2007 I still had fun with older games but I don't remember anything special coming out in 2007 that got be hyped up for it. Everything I wanted came out years prior up to 2006. But yeah for most of us PS2 was the last gen of actual gaming. Me after work going to a store and simply buy a game, go home and plug and play, especially on weekends with friends going through games. Those days are looooong gone. No need for research, no spoilers, no online locking, no dlc, no microtransactions, no corporate scams like the past 15-ish years ... PS3 was my last decent platform, PC was and is cancer, be it for "gaming" so as the mentally lost community itself is enough for me to not go there ... Most of the people I know either passed away or stopped gaming long ago, even kids go back to PS2 mod consoles with emulations and when they are done with it they simply stop gaming and don't care anymore since there is nothing else to care about really. I no I don't count people who stream and either make money from gaming or desperately try to, I talk about every day people, they are done bothering with games. I still have few modded PS2 consoles, 1st gen PS1 and that is it, sold PS3 and PS4 few years back before the outbreak nonsense and my PC is outdated for anything let alone gaming by now and I am not in a financial situation to burn money on vaporwave systems. We came to the era where I open a internet browser of any kind and it locks up my PC process rendering it useless. Gaming?! that doesn't exist for a long time, gaming today is rather called corporate scam and masocism.

If not humanity in general Peaked in the early 2000s, the perfect blend of highly advanced technology and experimentation, everything hadn't been completely infiltrated by the "money above ALL Else" hyper capitalist nightmare school of thought that we find ourselves in now. I compare it to cars, I'm a master mechanic and have been in the industry for almost a decade, the best cars ever made were from the early 90s to the mid/late 2000s, the perfect blend of highly advanced technology and computer control, and things still being mechanical, vehicles were much lighter leading to lower necessary safety standards leading to even lighter cars. The only reason why Nintendo remained to stink up the market is not because they made money on their products it's actually because they are a money laundry company. Sega didn't had that luxury ... for me personally the peak of video game consoles were the 6th generation. Hardware was still unique and all consoles had their own hardware quirks. Games were often specifically designed for the hardware, creating unique identity for each console... Games were still creative and not stuck in "conventions", even AAA studios experimented a lot and pushed video games as a medium. The video game market was smaller, you could overview it easier, but the games were often of great quality, at least those that reached the spotlight. Today most marketing and media spotlight goes to AAA studios and "live service games" and both makes "safe" and "profitable" games rather than pushing the medium. Sure, there are outliers. But the gaming climate has definitely changed over the years. And what I miss most about the 6th generation is local multiplayer. and how video games actually made us hang out IRL instead of over the internet.

1:36 - it's like 1998 was the year all the greats came out, but 2001 was the year that markets and industries aligned so that even for families who couldn't afford a nintendo you could still get a cheap PC that would play those greats from 1998. 2001 was the year we got to taste what the early adopters and rich/well-off people had been enjoying. We may not have been able to convince our parents to buy a Xbox, but we had PCs for school and we could LAN starcraft on it. It was the best of times, period.

Heck, you can go back to 1977 as the start of the golden age of gaming starting with the Atari. Growing up in the 1980s and 1990s, we got to look forward to quantum leaps in gaming almost every single year. There was always something bigger and better right around the corner. This ended sometime in the last decade. You don't have these quantum leaps anymore where games released today are a huge improvement over what was released in the prior couple of years. By comparison we got Wolfenstein 3D in 1992 which I can tell you was mind blowing at the time and then we got DOOM only on year later in 1993 which was on a whole other level yet again. That's what it was like every single year for the roughly 30 years after the Atari dropped in 1977.

Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec was when I finally got a PS2 & I played that game so much.. but I just wanted to say; everyone always claims GT2 had 650 Cars, when the US Release had Exsctly 594 Cars & as far as the 650 goes, I have heard that the PAL Vr has 650? I can’t confirm either at this point, but back in the day, I had a Magazine that stated the differences between version and 594 Car has been burnt into my brain ever since!

Great video! I agree, 2001 is one of the best years not only in gaming but entertainment in general. The 6th gen of consoles were finally able to show graphics that looked just like the artworks, portable systems finally abandoned the 8 bit world they were stuck in, the hype for the new millenium and the y2k inspired many futuristic looking artstyles for games, tecnology in general seemed to be evolving faster than ever... There was a nice mix between experimentation of new ideas and expansions of older ideas... As a nintendo fan, i belive it was one of their greatest years, as they were able to not only launch 2 new consoles, but also sustain all 4 of them, GBC, N64, GBA and GCN, giving big titles for each of them

I got a game boy advance and a Game Cube in 2001. I remember being disappointed at the lack of 3D graphics in the game boy advance and that seem like the only good games to get were ports of old Nintendo games. And with GameCube the other consoles seemed like they had better games at the time. Pretty soon all my friends were playing Halo on split screen and system link multiplayer, and then other games on Xbox live, and here I was with Pikmin and Luigi's Mansion...

I'd love to see you explore more big years of gaming even if they weren't as full of game changing genre defining classics as '98 and '01 were. 2004, 1994, 2007 and 1987 come to mind for me. I also don't think we'll ever get years like these again unless some major breakthrough nobody anticipated happens. The time around the turn of the century just happened to have a lot of talented people working in a very young industry, but these days, games are either too large to fully carry one person's artistic vision without too much risk or are too small to get noticed. The truly memorable titles are only going to get less and less common as time goes on.

As an 80s gamer, Ghost Recon was the game I was waiting my whole life for. I don't know if this makes any sense, but we knew even back in the 80s that a game like Ghost Recon would eventually be possible and when it finally came out it was just the best thing. I don't know if there is anything analogous today where gamers are looking forward to a type of game that isn't currently possible on 2024 hardware but might be in the future on 2040 hardware. Developers can pretty much do anything these days without any significant limitations.

The reason why the games at this time were some of the best is because they got through the hardships of the first generation 3D systems, but also PS2 and GameCube didn't really have internet connections. That means released games had to be complete and as bug free as possible. Limitations breeds creativity. The PS3 and higher generations started to suffer major quality issues because of their rush to get systems out the door, resulting in the RROD and YLOD issues, then with internet connected DLC, it pretty much started to destroy quality games. Nintendo is really the only system now that still produces actually finished, "quality" games.

As someone who is primairly a PC gamer 2001 was okay. Tribes 2 was a fantastic shooter, 64 players with vehicles and jetpacks was a very fun time. Max Payne, GTA 3 and MGS 2 were all good. I wouldn't call 2001 one of the top years ever,, its a year that has a huge number of games that were good but it's peaks just aren't high enough. It might be an interesting excersize to do a list of the 100 greatest games of all time (purely subjective of course) and look at what years have the most. For my tastes I would wager that there would be a cluster around 1994 with xcom doom FF6 and chrono trigger, another around 1998 and there might be a third in the early 2000s. Like I said this might just be a reflection of when whoever makes the list was most into games or had the most free time but I think it still makes for an interesting excersize.

2002 Is a top 10 year alot of people sleep on , but It carried alot of the stacked momentum of 2001 similar to how 1999 carried alot of the same momentum that 1998 had , depending on which region you lived In If yours got releases late you'd just be getting most 1998's great games In 1999 and most of 2001's great games In 2002 etc. Back then everything didn't release worldwide at the same time , Japan would take priority followed by or co-launching with America , and then everyone else kind of of got theirs a few months or even almost a year later.

Absolutely brother!!! I always say that some of my most favorite cherished times in gaming were the late 90s to early 2000s !!!! They were unbeatable and have not been matched since!!! From 1995 to 2005, that 10 year span we got some of the greatest games that I still play today! And I say I still play today, I mean, I pick them up and get a game going just about every time I’m sitting at trying to decide what to play? I’ll start to look at some games and it’ll just come to me immediately!! I do need a new PS2 … bought wine about six months back and the guy from Texas screwed me and so I immediately requested a refund!!! Sent it to me with the memory card door broke and dirt all over in the picture. It looked brand new with no damage.!! But I could get past that?? I could get past the system again!! if it wasn’t for the fact that it would only read PS1 games!!! So I returned it in haven’t been able to play none of my favorite old-school PS2 games like I have been with the Dreamcast in the Xbox … I guess I need a GameCube too.. Edit: IM SO TIRED OF FIGHTING WITH THE ABSOLUTELY IGNORANT AI IN IOHINE THESE DAYS! Edit2: *iPhone these days
