You gain sound with Grand Piano, but you lost weight on first octaves without Upright. For example, play Man of Steel using Grand Piano (it's a distintic from movie), because the first Octave on Grand Piano is too loud comparison with origin.

Been learning to play the piano for nearly a year now. Both sounded beautiful to me, though for me the grand piano had more fullness and richness in it’s sound. In terms of the reality of my life though, a grand piano is not a consideration based on space and cost. Therefore a nice upright would do in my home. Got to know life’s limitations!😊

It depends. There are uprights that are sounding way better then some cheap grand pianos. Am a pianist

​@@621jihoonkim You need to go and try some upright piano's. I had for example grand piano's where if played Pianisimo, it sounded like MF which means MF and pianisimo didn't bring much diference. Then i tried an upright a Yamaha and i did the same thing and the difference was amazing. That means i could express my emotions better at the upright piano then on a steinway and sons grand piano. I have on my fb page these videos where i try petrof, steinway and sons, Kawai, etc.. I try them at the conservatory that i attend. I also stumbled across a grand piano of steinway and sons where the keys were awfull,, you could feel and HEAR the plastic while playing. That means there's better plastic and worse plastic used by the brand. Best is ofcourse ivory key's,, i own a grand piano from 1912 made by IRMLER and nothing compares to it. Just go try some uprights and try to go after sound/dynamic feel. Choose a Yamaha and you'll be alright

You didn't explain the difference, so I will. A grand piano has horizontal strings and a horizontal action with hammers moving upwards. This orientation is superior because gravity helps to put the hammer back in position after striking a key, which means a grand piano can repeat notes quicker. As the name suggests, a grand piano is typically larger, giving them a fuller sound An upright piano has verticle strings and a verticle action. It is a compromise made for space efficiency, but personally, I usually like the character of an upright piano more. I think a grand piano sounds too perfect if that makes sense, and maybe too classical. The comparison in this video isn't very fair, though, because the upright piano is closed. You can get much more out of an upright piano by taking the panels off. Also, the character varies wildly. Two upright pianos can also sound completely different from each other, and so can two grand pianos... Also, besides the sustain pedal, the other pedals typically have different functions on grand piano's vs. upright piano's, but this also varies within the same category. All with all grand piano's are superior and more professional, but with their own character, which isn't the most suitable for all genres.

You should mention what piece you're playing?Of course, if the space (and budget) allows, nothing beats a grand piano. However, the upright will suit a small space or apartment setting just fine until you really need to use the double escapement that a grand provides

As a teenage piano player(a tiny bit under 3 years of experience). That was absolutely mesmerising.

The problem with upright pianos is that they were invented for less space. Sound from grand pianos coming out from above and below. In upright only from one side. Also grand pianos have longer strings btw

Upright piano sounds more like a saloon piano.... but standing free or against a wall also makes a difference.... but hearing this.....and compare it to some digital piano's.... the DP's are getting closer and closer

No different as long pro pianist like u play made both sound beautiful unlike beginner like me

String length, unless one gets a 5ft 7 or larger grand, the string length of one of the tallest uprights would provide almost the same string length, Uprights obviously take up less room, and really need to be against a wall and will utilize the room as a speaker. A big differerence not mentioned much is that the action in a ground is up and down so gravity naturally pulls the notes down and back into place after being played, Uprights the action is sideways so gravity cannot help. Bass notes on a grand seem to usually have more fullness and maturity.

80% of the time, I'd say the grand piano sounds better. But they have different sounds. There are times where the upright would fit the desired sound better.

Open the lid on the upright or close the grand lid for a more fair comparison.

I prefer the upright

I’m a classical pianist and I can pretty much play any composition let me break it down for you let’s say you are living in a flat or an apartment and you don’t have the space for a grand piano then I would recommend getting an upright. If you live in a house like me and have the room well, the Grand wil l always be the most powerful instrument. You can grt a Yamaha C3 for $25000 usD. A U 3 is about $25000-17000 and a U 1 Is about $7000 so factor in price. You can get a 6’3 C3 for about $25000. Depends on your budget and living space.

The "upright" piano that has a back that tall is the same string length of a 5' 2: BABY grand piano. The GRAND piano you play on this video looks like a 72" grand piano. 52" is as long/tall as an upright-grand gets. They are considered UPRIGHT BABY GRANDS

Hi, thank you very much for your comment. I do agree with you. Unfortunately it sounds very different in reality and phone microphone can not catch the real acoustic. We try to make good comparison videos with a professional mic and cameras to get the most realistic sound of the piano, but this video is not the best example of that.. It is hard to hear from the recording but the difference is actually massive, although doesn’t really matter if you get used to one though. I was lucky enough to play my friend’s Steinway and it is just majestic beyond my comprehension comparing to my upright, but like the first few days I felt bad with my upright when I was practicing but after a while it doesn’t matter. All that matters is the key actions+the skills you can develop from it!

I'm not sure it'll make much more of a difference if you yourself cant hear it, but you can hear the dynamics better with the grand piano. Things like the nuances of volume are heard better on the grand than the upright one. But to your average listener, the difference is barely heard.

I'm pretty sure this is an instrumental cover of a pop/rock song of some sort, it does sound strangely familiar. Not a song I hear very often though, I don't think. Edit: It has a bit of a resemblance to "Heart in Danger" from Southern Sons, which is probably why it sounds vaguely familiar. Not that it is, though.

The grand piano is just a fancy piano, an upright piano is more of a house hold friendly piano with relatively the same quality.

I like them both to be honest. However the upright you were playing had a long board. Most upright pianos won't sound that good.

Grand pianos if you have the budget and space. An upright is still good as an alternative. Of course, sound is fuller on a grand and most of the time, keyboard action plays better on grand pianos dude to the design limitation of uprights. Still, an upright is hands down still better than some of the best digital pianos.

For me the notes sound less distinguishable on the grand piano bc they're...blurred? I was able to hear individual notes on the upright more clearly, maybe because the sound is more contained. Is the grand piano meant to sound very echo-y?
