I was in a motorcycle accident about 3 weeks ago(school bus parked on top of me). It’s been a lot of rough nights and days. I’m a fairly simple man, and thankfully I found your channel. You’ve helped me through a lot of the painful nights I can’t sleep, and the days I’ve spent laying around waiting for doctors/surgeries. Thanks Derek for your dedication and hard work to entertainment.

Dude. Feel better. I got a nephew that just got out of the ICU the other day. A coworker rolled the work truck. Two broken vertebrae, and a list of other breaks, but today he was walking with a walker. 13 days after the wreck. These young guys. I tell ya. But hang in there. One of these days, you'll be able to light up a torch and cut a shool bus right in half. The long way.

From 10:15 to 12:50, Derek perfectly captured the moments of the mental breakdown in the garage. The uncanny resemblance to myself (only replacing the light saber with a a 30 second flare of newly manufactured vulgarity) created an existential flashback to every single instance I've had to resort to such aggression.

Derek, a couple tips. For the seat, don't trash it. I believe the tracks of a regular 80's regal with power seats can be swapped over and you'll be back in business there with full power. Or you could swap over tracks from a manual seat and be in good shape too. If you do replace the seats, save those seat covers. OEM covers are hard to come by. For the snake belt, check the length. It may be 1/2" too long. For many years the parts books quoted a snake belt that was 1/2" too long and that unloaded the idler pulley just a bit too much allowing the idler pulley yo contact one of the bolt heads and chew up the bolt and the pulley. It'll run, but it will chew up parts and possibly set off the knock detector making the ECM pull timing every time it sees the false knock from the pulley contacting the bolt head. For wheels, look for a set of aluminum T-Type wheels. They're much lighter than the OEM steel wheels and they look like a WE4. They're cheap and you can get some pretty wide wheels for the rear. Steamroller looking stuff. It can still roast them too. So good to see the old gal on the road again. A while back I was considering contacting you about my 86 to see if you were interested since you had said you were looking for one, but I never did. Mine was a daily driver back in the day. Now it just waits for me to do something with it. Enjoy the GN, they are fantastically fun cars and no matter how old you are, they make you feel like a kid again. And when the boost comes up high enough, they make you feel like a stupid kid again. 🙂 Can't wait to see more of the GN in the future.

Out of all the cars you’ve had on the channel, this one truly deserves a restoration. I’m sure the content will be well worth it and not to mention the bones of the car are in well enough condition where it wouldn’t be entirely complex. This car has a great following and becoming harder and harder to find. Someday the boys could be sitting on a real gold mine (or at least silver)

He remains humble and does not exploit people or things to his advantage. He has actually helped me stop obsessing over dents and scratches. I sold my brand new truck and bought a dented up Chevy and old mini van. Down to earth guy.

My one experience with a hydro boost braking system was on a 76 Chevy 3+3 Camper Special with a 454 and 4speed manual. Got it all done after all the minor mechanical etcetera work, drove it 30 miles to town to get it certified, and all went great until I had to brake hard to dive into an off camber exit off the TransCanada highway. Let me tell you that having seconds to decide on brakes or steering definitely makes the old adrenaline rush work in a hurry. Thank heavens for manual transmissions.

I think if there is one car in your stable to do an actual restoration on this would be a good candidate. I know your philosophy is to get ‘em running and get ‘em back on the road and this is a pretty rough example but it’s still a GN and they are only going to gain value/collectibility plus it make for something a little bit different for the channel. I’m sure there’s a portion of your fanbase that isn’t into the whole patina thing and would like to see how *you* would go about building a “shiny” car.

This thing is the ONE car of yours that really NEEDS a full restoration. Of all the cars this one deserves it the most. Take your time, do it correctly. It deserves to be babied and I think you are one of the best people for it! Paint def needs to be kept as is with a bit of love put into it to really show the history of the car but the rest of it, make it better then new!!

Man, that angle and the music at 1:02:50-1:03:15 is a legend moment to see that from that angle on the country road with all the scratches and decaying car still going with the windows down I love it. Gets me emotional. I used to ride in old decaying cars with my dad on country roads listening to some rock and roll with the smell of exhaust fumes windows down. torn up head liners-stained carpets. I love it. Brings out the male in a guy and feels good. There is nothing like it. Also really makes you feel American. True American. Great video.

Always entertaining and informative as well. By the way, at the time when they were new, the Grand National was the most stolen car, apparently. Keep doing your thing, Derek, I'll tune in every time.

I bought an ‘87 GN way back in 19 an 89…. The cool thing about it was that no one really knew what it was. I could smoke pretty much anything with it and it was also great for grabbing groceries. Definitely the ultimate machines back then. It’s amazing to me how they all look the same… dirty, rusty, clean, shiny- they seem to have the same attitude, they command respect and admiration. Great work Sir

When I was 18, I bought a 1988 Mustang GT. My first street race with the Mustang was against a 1987 Buick Grand National. I was two cars ahead at the start, but the turbo kicked in and ultimately, the Stang couldn't hang. Nothing but respect for these dominating muscle cars of the 80's and 90's. Derek, I would love to see this car restored to all of it's glory!!!

What you want is a driver's side seat track from a 1987 or 88 G body with either bucket or split bench seats. GM redesigned the track for the last year and eliminated the plastic gear box. It uses 3 separate motors instead and is far more reliable.

Ive always had a soft spot for the Grand National, and after watching you try so hard to get this one on the road, only to have your hopes dashed by the worst brake system GM ever designed, it feels real good to see it back on the road! An idea for the exterior, maybe a real nice coat of deep black, followed by about 6 coats of candy, make that car look like a real night shadow!!!!

It’s always good to see a Feller get something he’s hoped for and prayed for ! It’s very gratifying driving something like that especially after wrenching on it yourself! They are fun cars , the Buick turbo 6 cylinder grand nationals were a very fast car for a V-6!!! I almost bought one back when they were hot off the presses the GNX is the really hot one , but they are all fun to drive! I knew that seat was going to turn into a fiasco ! They were crap when they were new! You know that plastic housing that exploded! My 1967 Pontiac Firebirds cam timing chain gear teeth were coated with that crap all in the name of being quiet! Till one day I went to start it to go to work and the car literally “ shit itself” in the garage the broken disintegrated plastic filled all the oil galleries, caused so much pressure in the oil filter it blew off the mount, oh a Feller was using Fram oil filters back then! 🤫I totally rebuilt that motor .30 over new hydraulic Sig Erson cam , lifters, new 650 Carter AFB . New exhaust with Turbo mufflers really nice tones! Hauled ass too! Makes a Feller proud! Keep up the good work Derek them little fellers you’ve got around there sure grow up fast! Our three girls did the same thing , we have 11 grand kids now! A blessing one and all! Our best you you all! Regards Mad Mike S. ………

I never thought I could ever be so jealous as I am while watching this. My favorite car of ALL TIME! It was going to be the first car I ever bought with the money I saved up...+ some funding needed from my father. 1986, only 7.000 miles. Sales managers demo car. All was going well until...my father wanted to come along with me since he was funding some of my first car. I was a lucky 24 year old "kid" and had the best parents. My dad was a HUGE Buick fan. HUGE! And he loved that I was considering a Buick Regal...as I told him I was getting. I had asked the salesman NOT to elaborate and we would be fine. Welp...he saw a Regal. Shiny, black and BEAUTIFUL. Still had him thinking it was a Regal and was ready to sign the papers. Then the poop hit the fan...he wanted to ride in it before I signed the papers. Great. I'll put him in the back seat...he was only 5' 3" and maybe he wouldn't care about looking at the dash. He was also rather on the hard-of-hearing side, so maybe he wouldn't really hear what he was riding in. And he did not have the best eye-sight, so maybe he wouldn't see "Grand National" in beautiful lettering on the side of the car. Just maybe. All was well until he asked the salesman about the gauges on the dash. My dad might have been short, he may have been a HUGE Buick fan and may have had the hearing of a bat. But when it came to a 24 year old in a car with the capabilities (he did NOT have to hear the salesman say it was among the fastest production cars made) this car had...he was all those things but stupid. I went home with a low mileage Impala. Soooooo jealous.

Love your take on enjoying your ride, fixing it up or keeping it going and not being a harsh critic of what you have or have accomplished with it. To be honest after that bit I immediately went to wondering how much it could be cleaned up without paint, just polishing it up and giving it a coat of boiled linseed oil. That is a cool car you got there, rust, faded paint, unobtainable parts and all.
