I always enjoy your honesty. And want to point out something you've mentioned before as well. A lot of times how we feel about a wine can change from day to day, dependent on mood and many other factors. And I can't remember if this is something you've said or if I've heard it elsewhere. But sometimes there can be a bias to the first wine tried in a tasting, especially blind.

Nice and corageous video. Blind tasting Burgundy classifications is always tricky. Many times the lower classified wines are either plushier and/or more upfront than the more noble classified wines, which can play the right hand in a blind tasting. I had a similar experience with a Sauzet blind tasting.....the Bourgogne stole the show against the less giving higher classified cousins. The shop owner said they just needed more time to show their qualities.

You aint wrong! Love your honest correct responses. Burgundy is gambling!! Great Burgundy is usually a rare surprise. Vineyards that taste the same year after year are the expensive ones, because of distinction, not really just quality. Chablis really depends on the warmth of the vintage and is changing fast (as global warming). These days cheap wines can be way good. Vineyard studies are library stuff. Love your show!!!

You are working with wines on the more expensive side that are definitely capable of improving with age and they are not all from the same vintage. At least they were from the same producer. And the fact that you might have completely different notes on a different day is also kind of wild. I love Chablis--though climate change is having a drastic effect on what these wines taste like, which I think is also part of what you are experiencing. 2019 is quite an excellent vintage for Chablis personally, checks all the right boxes and has a great balance of just enough opulence and not a low acidity warm vintage like 2018, but has enough body, acidity to counter the richness and make it enjoyable at this moment. With 5 years bottle age this makes some of the more structured 1er and Grand Cru's approachable, but also can age a bit longer (though not like the classic 2014s that can last a lot longer). If you ever get a chance, blind different climats of 1er cru's, same vintage, that way you can be amazed by the variations. Pick some more minerally ones, left and right of Serein river, throw in a climat in proximity to a Grand Cru site (Montee de Tonerre) , and pick a flag bearing climat 1er cru and throw in also a sub climat (e.g. Butteaux / Foret against Montmains which is flag bearing, ie a wine made from grapes from Butteaux or Foret can be called Montmains, or their respective vineyard, but Montmains can come from grapes anywhere within Butteaux, Foret, and Montmains). There are some 1ers that don't see any oak (not even neutral) and some that are a bit more oak forward (even if neutral). Though the challenge is to find a producer that has access to all these different vineyards and bottles them (or just pick different producers to throw things off more). Then try with Grand Cru's separately which would be just as fun. La Chablisienne might have enough bottlings to make this blind tasting challenge affordable too.

Remember, please, that Chablisienne is a cooperative, so by definition their Bourgogne and Chablis village (at minimum) will come from several grape growers and plots. Their basic Chablis is one of my favorites! We concur on the Chateau Grenouilles, high price and just good performance. For higher end wines, I far prefer Mont de Milieu and Montee de Tonnerre from William Fevre.

Clearly a difficult tasting as Chablis tends to be more pleasant when aging. The main difficulty comes from the fact that these wines are from the same vintage. Often, Chablis needs more time to open itself, to be really enjoyable. The first cru can take 5-10 years to be ready but the grand cru needs 10-15 years to develop its potential. So no stress… My best Chablis was a Dauvissat village from 2014 : what a year for Chablis ! Have a nice day.

White Burgundy can be very good value for money. This tasting in fact proves it, it also proves that paying up is generally not worth it. Few people seem to know or realize that Burgundy is 70% white, 30% red. Since the most hyped up wines tend to be red, you end up over-paying for red Burgundy, but can find good value in whites. It's a bit the opposite in Bordeaux, which is 90% red. Given that Bordeaux production is 4x Burgundy and given the mix difference, it means that there are about 12x more red Bordeaux in the market than red Burgundy. That simple maths explains, in my opinion, why red Bordeaux is much better value than red Burgundy. In white, the production level are almost the same, hence the value is also closer.

Nice guy but appalling at tasting wines and unfortunately I think this video adds nothing, apart from seeing him in pain, to the already crowded world of “wine connoisseurs” in KZread. Additionally the video title is very funny, is there a difference? To this Dr. obviously not even vs basic Bourgogne.
