just finished it on Netflix. its an alright anime but the biggest issue I had (besides the laughably over the top violence) is the main character. the main character is seen to be this special guy who has a gift that others don't possess. all I saw throughout this entire anime is one insanely lucky dude. seriously this guy was just at the right place at the right time. a wandering warrior with absolutely nothing to his name bumps into a young powerful mage who has the hots for him and also has connections to many people in high positions. This dude Theo conaro jumps like two whole military ranks in a mere 3 episodes, this man went from poor lonely warrior to a guy that is a commander of his own army and owns a piece of territory. seriously this mage chick needs the mvp award, she managed to set up everything Theo needed to succeed without him doing too much work. then later on in the show we got this dark price dude who seems to be the most deadly skilled fighter on this show, he sparred with Theo before they were enemies and even gave him some tips, so the show was clearly building a showdown between the two. the two finally meet, and as they clash swords, the insanely skilled prince is dead tired. apparently he wasted his energy due to dividing it between all his men, so Theo luckily again didn't have to put much effort into the fight and delivered a final blow which was a major letdown for me cause I was looking forward to their fight. eventually this dude wins several more questionable battles and becomes emperor of his country. looking back at it, if it was any other guy that met the mage with similar aspirations to theo's, then they could've met the same success he did. Theo in the end was just a very, VERY lucky guy.

Yeah he was used by silucca for her goals he even agreed to help her knowing this and she chose him for certain characteristics he had. She would not have chosen him for no reason.

wow that's totally true. I was watching this anime and thinking that it has some really interesting ideas at play but for some reason it just wasn't satisfying to watch. I would say those two points is why. Like you can def see that the characters are *changing* but the development is sort of suggested. Also the arcs don't get enough build up to get invested in them. Each arc basically starts right at the climax and then abruptly ends.

Totally agree. Watching this on Netflix and have sort out a review to see if people agree with me. Would make a good video game but it was rushed and poorly thought out. 2d characters and not at all relatable. The reason given for people to join him are totally half arsed too. "Oh you captured my mage. You have potential to rule the land. I will join you." Or "you want to save your village, cool story I can see you stick to your convictions. Let me swear a wookie life debt" .. Seriously..

Remember that chaos convergence will be on the exam.

Yea pretty average stuff for a fantasy but the world building was really well done with the war. It also had a really good ending.

Just finished it and it's alright to kill 2 days watching something. It rushes stuff but it's not that annoying when you focus on the story. I never really got attached to the characters either. Also there's no big hanger. Long story short it's not a bad show but it's good enough to watch for 20 episodes.

I could tell from ep 1 that it's rushed and felt annyoed but after some eps I indulged into the anime

I think the difference of this compared to the others is the writing. The story telling is much better done than other fantasy animes.

The best part about this anime is that instead of explaining things, it just expects you to pay attention to rush the story forward.

little did he know this is a story where people die a lot and has bitter moments but it all leads to satisfactory end

The demon that came from somewhere because of something and did its thing then more stuff happened

This anime had a lot of potential, the ending episodes were way better then the middle. Surely the anime was rushed as no good character development happened. I finally started to understand the anime at the end but the actual animation made it boring. The actual story and meaning is good.

idk what to do with this one wet, maybe i stay whatching just to fulfill the lap of minimal 5 anime per season that i'm doing, but the "camp" is always a priority.

I am not going to say it is best fantasy anime but I think this is definitely better than SAO. The story is somewhat linear but there is a variety of interesting faction and alliances. They are not afraid of killing important characters and there is a plot twist near the end of the show and the story is closed. What I appreciate most about the show is that there is no fan service and it has a somewhat mature feel to it (something like Game of Thrones). If you don't know what to watch give it a shot.

I finished the anime right now and Iiked it but have questions: Didn't the last two episodes, or when it came to the ending, felt rushed? It wasn't logic to me at some points. For example the fight against the cyclops. Hey get's ressurected in front of the city and didn't even looked behind himself to find the city he once wanted to destroy. Another point is when they fought the Vampire King, where the fuck did Eon, or whatever his name is, came from. Like they got teleported into the forest and entered the castle and bam- he just randomly showed up with a coffin in his hands. Also this perma enviroment change. As well the marriage, where is Silucas father the whole time, he also had no reaction when their marriage was announced. This point is probably dumb to ask, but did the black cat die or just vanished? At all I have to say that so many characters got introduced but had barely screentime, like the two merchants(steel and archer dude), some Lords, Silucas sister, her butler, the twins, the black cat, Pricilla who just showed up to heal and save some characters and to be the sacrafice - and the choas itself. It get's shown in the first ep and some monsters at the beginning but that's it, didn't feel very dangerous and the real antagonist besides Milza/Janna(/Vampire King) acting as some. Other question is what happened to the guy who fled in ep23 (the one who ordered the other guy to kill Pricilla)? Just looks like a good end for the main cha and his crew but not for the world itself. Like what are the others doing now?

It felt as if huge chunks of vital information were just hacked away from us. I throughly enjoyed the story and I pieced together what the lexicon meant as time passed, but the series just leaves the viewer straggling behind playing a game of “catch up.” If there was development behind every impactful character, even a little, it would have made all the difference. World building was well thought out, and they established an okay hierarchy chain. The world leaves you wondering what other talents are available to artists or mages. Despite the rush at times, it was a decent story.

I think for the rest of this anime season I'm going to be comparing every anime to yuru camp. I can't thank you enough for your video on it. Without it I wouldn't have given it a shot. As for this anime though I think it'll be really mediocre, but I will watch it bit to see if it gets any interesting. If it goes like most I may end up dropping this anime. Anyway good video like always.

if they showed more chaos it would of been better and didn't combine the crests to destroy chaos it would of been good

I'm really hoping Darling in the FranXX turns to be good. I want a good Mecha show and its been awhile. Season is having a surprisingly good start with shows like Devilman already being a contender for AOS. Then you have Yuru Camp and Sora yori mo Tooi Basho having good first episodes.

Same. Not sure how much involvement Trigger has apart from what looks like their character designs but it does look pretty promising. Devilman is totally going to slip under some radars but Masaaki Yuasa is my boy and I look forward to binging on it this weekend.

I was reading a Q/A about Trigger's upcoming series. A lead Trigger animator said it's leaning towards a trigger style and mech scenes have Trigger's touch. Hoping it will feel more like a Trigger show than A-1. A-1 produces so much, but only some of it ends up being good.

For me it felt really rushed which put me off really early but still watched it to the end, granted mostly on my phone listening to what they say(learning Japanese came in clutch 😅)

love this anime, kinda subjective but... i think its one of the best...

The soundtrack was pretty incredible, and I loved that it was consistent throughout. I never read the light novel but biggest fault imo I felt the main, overarching antagonist(s) with exception of Mizra (I think that was his name anyway) idk if that's the right word to use was incredibly underwhelming. I mean after showing Pandora off at the start and with the stake burning just for her to do nothing. I feel much like this video said, it had so much more to go off of but neglected to do so making it a bleh overall imo

Oh god....A show based on a tabletop RPG. Yeah, because Chaos Dragon already showed us how well that works.

You got that backwards. The Record of Gracrest War Rpg, is based on a series of light-novels, nine volumes so far. They are written by the man behind The Record of Lodoss Wars series, and related spinoffs.

You got that incorrect as well: 'In parallel to the light novel Ryo Mizuno and Shunsaku Yanō developed a tabletop role-playing game called Grancrest RPG' sounds like they were worked on in tandem. But then again I can't find any information about the actual table-top game outside of the Wikipedia entry so not sure how successful it actually was or how correct the info is.

Well it's probably like they wrote a system and played through adventures, while also writing down what happened and create a light novel out of it. (I-It's not like I'm basically doing the same thing right now or anything) The problem with stuff like that is that the creators of such 'worlds' take them way too seriously and make everything overcomplicated, because they somehow assume that everyone feels that way about their story.

DUDE game of thrones has a lot of backstory it throws at you season 1 episode 1.

As i already see the comments i must say you got something wrong which makes the premise of the show look more boring than it is. The anime is less about fighting random monsters but more about train your lord for world domination. The female mage uses optimistic little theo to basically make him more powerful so he will sooner or later take over the world (he just wants to take over his home country becouse they have bad rulership) . First season will probably be about the first few takeovers. Doesn't sound as bad now, right?

Sounds basically the same. Lords get stronger by fighting chaos (random monsters) and then fight other lords for those epic typical anime fights. I personally don't see anything new but hey that's just me. Enjoy~!

Oh no no no I never said it was original, I'm just trying to say you made it sound a little too boring, I mean it's to it's core a very simple show but there are beginners in this medium who may want to start watching anime this season for the first time and it may be something special to them then. One of my favorite anime is Black Cat, by now nobody knows this show but for me it was special, after all it was the first of a kind for me. I really like your content and you do your own thing, but I see those cute girls who go camping or such stuff the same way with which you see this show. If someone would ask me for a review of cute girl shows this season. I still would talk about it fairly. Maybe I'm just overthinking it , so as I said, you do you I will still watch your content, though it would make me happy if you try to consider such stuff. I found this anime really confusing because they didn't explain any backstory it was like watching just side characters like the main character seems so generic to me that it throws it off? Idk that might not be it UGH it's so confusing I'm confused about what's confusing

Thought it was a great anime, the message it conveys about oppression and freedom is excellent.

For some weird reason the show look pretty boring to me too. Which is strange because if I would watch a real life meaning of a show like Game of Thrones or the sorcerers apprentice, heck even Lord of the rings was extremely appealing to me. But medieval based fantasy shows really just don’t have it for me. Which is weird because the only romantic comedies that I like are ones with this Japanese animation. Very weird.

My biggest issue with this anime is that the “true villains” who were pulling the strings and the final confrontation with them was so underwhelming. I loved the battles and the fight scenes but besides that everything was like....meh. It also seemed like the writers and directors of this show tried to fit seasons worth of content into one season instead of focusing on character development. Another anime show that had the potential but it fell way short because of its sweeping boring story and bland fantasy bullshit. Even the map of the world is boring. I mean...really? It just looks like they copied a map of Europe and then mushed it together. I guess that’s what happens when you lack creativity.

Most of people in this comments dont understand how the anime industry works. You complain about the lore of the series but this is not about lore. If you look for the deep intense and well explained history you should be looking at the light novel version of the Franchise. Anime version of any light novel is a Visual "Fanservice" for their followers + promotion to sell more novels and Anime copies to already readers of the novels. You maybe are missing the best pieces because youre not able to enjoy the hole process of how the anime come into place. Before directing this kind of empty critics to Anime that have proper lore you should direct it to the Anime Production companies and merchandising. This is the current way it works because there are not enough buyers using legal ways to influence them into more complete works towards people only able to see the translated anime been by Subtitled or Dub. If you continue to do Anime reviews in the future please make sure to study the Industry a bit more and make your critics on something solid and not empty alegations on industry standards.

You can promote a light novel and sell a good product at the same time you know. That kind of logic is why we keep getting shit adaptation of manga and light novel.

You need to learn to get more information on something before giving it an opinion as such not everything starts off gloriously and shine line like a diamond from the get go and Grancrest is a perfect example of that. Although you were right on the money with the Game of Thrones feel.

I watched all the anime and I think it was average,.

I read some of the manga for a while just to see what all the hype was about and it had some of the worst pacing I'd seen in a long time. 0 character depth, loads of exposition. You meet a new character than poof: he's suddenly sworn his loyalty to Theo for literally no reason other than Theo is the good guy. I'll check the anime out but I already feel like I know exactly how it's going to pan out

What i hate bout this anime is the waifus is sooooo goood but the guy put no reaction at all

Na dude, there's a market for this stuff unfortunately. It's just the nature of anime, there's gonna be very few truly great ones. The medium of manga has far more creative freedom, thus more variety and quality.

Rubbish review, maybe if you done your homework more you would no that the characters do get developed but because it is a twenty four episode anime unlike all the short rushed seasonal anime this one could take its time and progress slowly and saying it was there just to support and advertise the light novel unlike most anime these days this has an ending.

Just play Middle Earth Shadow Of War. It's much better than this medicore feast

They work together and stop the chaos creatures? If only that could happen. But this show has a tendency of giving plot and nothing but plot. Seriously, the second time I watched this, I noticed that there is no character development. Everyone just does what the plot tells them and feels the way they should because plot is happening. This show is only good to watch once honestly. That's if you don't notice all the flaws.

anime is a solid 7/10. Had a chance to be amazing but sadly failed. character development was by far the worst part, it would introduce characters that could very well be interesting and cool but horribly failed in building them. As for many others, the other worlds “aether, dark” weren’t explained and left me confused. I had no idea how or what magic or art was or how many types there were. how were people able to get crests. too much unexplained nonsense thrown in. if they took their time with this anime it would’ve been AMAZING. but it failed so poorly in terms of explanation. hopefully it is continued or redone and everything is explained. Thank you :)

Watched this last night and just thought it was just super mediore. Nothing stands out. Even with a hypothetical lack of good anime this season, I still wouldn't watch it because it would just be a time waster.

Kind of - but I try to differ between time spent worthwhile (Houseki no Kuni, Ballroom e Youkoso, Made in Abyss) and time wasted (Grancrest Senki?, Ousama Game, Black Clover) because I'm bored and/or try to distract myself from more important things. It's such an "old man" thing to say but free time is limited and I'd rather spend the time with things I actually enjoy.

The writing was so bland that I was free to spend the entire watch through scream-laughing at how hideous the show is. The only shots drawn well are the face close-ups, of which there are many, presumably because those are the only shots drawn well. Either way, by the time Theo's big sweeping introduction was illustrated with a Meduca Meguca scrawl, I was in tears.

This anime is a Femenist wet dream and his filled with female hypergamy. The main character Theo is the worst, because he can't fight at the begining yet he can lead and inspire warrior like lords to follow him. The lords that don't follow Theo like bad ass Millsa the dark prince who took a castle by himself, single handedly slays enemy commanders and defeats Theo in his first duel like a Man fighting a child, is somehow overwhelmed by Theo in their final duel because Millsa gets worn out by Theo defending against his agressive attacks. Thats like saying Theo defeated Millsa with his good looks and his superior wifu gather capabilities and Millsa so unloved by women lost to his stronger boyband superiority. In conclusion this anime is a joke and its script writer Rachel, obviously a woman wrote the script to be her ideal romantic novel anime instead of a decent war strategy fantasy anime. Now someone please stop me from watching this anime before I faint and lose my man card to these weak knee anime character plots.

It’s too rushed and the mc should’ve been more badass in the beginning and they should’ve started the story to see his struggles THEN see the wedding but it’s below average. Just like the daily life of the immortal king 🤦🏽‍♂️ this anime is ASS. Like why have these goody goody ass mc’s like bruh then the cliche’s be cringy
