Granby Roll In MMA - A Wrestling Takedown Defence To Escape & Stand Up

Спорт

The Granby Roll is a wrestling counter that has become an excellent takedown defence technique for use in MMA. In this study, we look at its use as an escape from turtle or standing. The Granby Roll can even be used as a guard recovery technique and submission entry for Jiu-Jitsu players.
The Granby roll gets its name from Granby high school in Norfolk, Virginia where it was made popular by legendary coach Billy Martin Senior. The Granby roll is only one part of a larger Granby wrestling system that the school teaches,

Yup. I had close caption on on another video a few years ago when I saw it was “Granby”… I was wondering for so long why it was named after an old woman… LOL… though it took me a little longer to find out where the term “Granby” came from, but it still sounded better than “Granny Roll”

I grew up wrestling for coaches who wrestled for Billy Martin Sr. at Granby high school in Norfolk, VA. The move didn't really have a name until the high school students went on to wrestle at colleges across the country. During the tournaments the announcers didn't know how or what to call the move so they simply said that the "boys from Granby are doing that roll." It became known as the Granby roll. The original movement was mostly a forward roll but it soon evolved into the arm being thrown cross body during the roll. It works best when the opponent on top applies downward and forward pressure on you (trying to break you down into the mat). If there is no pressure being applied then it makes it difficult for the move to be successful. Great video!

Sonny Brown you might like “facing violence” and the other books by the author (rory miller i think). As far as wrestling on concrete, i figure the moves where you slam your own knees down have got to go. Greco stuff maybe.

Why don't they do this in movie fight choreography, even in the best of HK films? Because it requires a real fighter to pull off wrestling maneuvers including the amazing Granby rolls while any fool can punch, kick, do acrobats and do those virtually useless standing locks that you see in movies! A typical or even world class martial artist who isn't a fighter won't be able to display this in a movie choreography because non of them could really wrestle which is the foundation to becoming a real fighter and thus, the foundation to pull off those amazing, beautiful Granby Rolls! I guess reality is really stranger (more beautiful) than fiction!
