Granby Roll In MMA - A Wrestling Takedown Defence To Escape & Stand Up
Спорт
The Granby Roll is a wrestling counter that has become an excellent takedown defence technique for use in MMA. In this study, we look at its use as an escape from turtle or standing. The Granby Roll can even be used as a guard recovery technique and submission entry for Jiu-Jitsu players.
The Granby roll gets its name from Granby high school in Norfolk, Virginia where it was made popular by legendary coach Billy Martin Senior. The Granby roll is only one part of a larger Granby wrestling system that the school teaches,

Great great upload. I know this technique from bjj rolling sessions, but you gave a simple full detail form guide, and then showed it in endless positions. First video of yours ive ever seen or heard of but will be subbed now.

Yup. I had close caption on on another video a few years ago when I saw it was “Granby”… I was wondering for so long why it was named after an old woman… LOL… though it took me a little longer to find out where the term “Granby” came from, but it still sounded better than “Granny Roll”
I always liked the forward roll to kneebar combo. It works well from standing or turtle.

I was just watching a video on crocop's channel and then suddenly I thought hey Sonny Brown hasn't posted in ages. Little did I know that for some reason youtube wasn't notifying me of new videos ! Oh well I have a nice set of videos waiting for me to watch. Thanks for the informative video on the Granby roll too !

Thank you Sir! I hope to keep making plenty more!
Thank you! Excellent!
I grew up wrestling for coaches who wrestled for Billy Martin Sr. at Granby high school in Norfolk, VA. The move didn't really have a name until the high school students went on to wrestle at colleges across the country. During the tournaments the announcers didn't know how or what to call the move so they simply said that the "boys from Granby are doing that roll." It became known as the Granby roll. The original movement was mostly a forward roll but it soon evolved into the arm being thrown cross body during the roll. It works best when the opponent on top applies downward and forward pressure on you (trying to break you down into the mat). If there is no pressure being applied then it makes it difficult for the move to be successful. Great video!

@SonnyBrown
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alexandros, I'll keep putting them out! Wrestling for the streets is tough, In fact, all of street self-defence can get into a bit of a strange area where effective techniques can intersect with moral and legal obligations that I have to give some more thought towards.

Sonny Brown you might like “facing violence” and the other books by the author (rory miller i think). As far as wrestling on concrete, i figure the moves where you slam your own knees down have got to go. Greco stuff maybe.
A Granary Roll is not as useful from a grappling perspective but with the right filling, makes for a healthy lunchtime snack.

Was wondering why Poirier didn't apply one of these rolls when Connor caught his foot in the second round of their epic fight yesterday. Didn't cost him the win in the end. But this Granby or other rolls would have been a viable escape solution.

I didn't know this had an actual name 😂 I use it a lot in judo, but I have to be careful with it because sometimes I get caught in the middle when I'm on my shoulders
@SonnyBrown

Yep it sure does :) Yeah Im sure it would work for Judo but the problem you mention of getting pinned does exist in wrestling too which is where this move can be a bit of an exception as it does involve exposing the back.

@@SonnyBrown judo has the gi which complicates things. We get a lot of actual old HS wrestlers there and i don't use those kinds of dynamic movements against them because they've seen it s lot and they also know to clamp on my gi to stop my movement when I'm on my shoulders

Haha i can't help it !
I can never pull this off against wrestlers. We get a lot of wrestlers at my judo gym and I always know not to use this on them because they will just latch onto my gi and pin me in the middle of it. I feel like it would work much better without the gi
Why don't they do this in movie fight choreography, even in the best of HK films? Because it requires a real fighter to pull off wrestling maneuvers including the amazing Granby rolls while any fool can punch, kick, do acrobats and do those virtually useless standing locks that you see in movies! A typical or even world class martial artist who isn't a fighter won't be able to display this in a movie choreography because non of them could really wrestle which is the foundation to becoming a real fighter and thus, the foundation to pull off those amazing, beautiful Granby Rolls! I guess reality is really stranger (more beautiful) than fiction!
