re map at 3:17 - Poland also has bears. It might seems as it's just Slovakia, but it's simply Carpathian mountain range where bears are, which covers big chunk of Slovakia compared to other countries.

Brown bears in central Europe lives in Carpatian Mountains (including south of Poland) It is because Poland is quite dens populated area and so our ancestors killed them all. The bears survived only in less accessible Mountains. On vast area of today's Poland bears extincted in 18th century and the last one in Białowieża Forest on Poland-Belarus border was seen 60 years ago.

We all know that for polar bears you don't use bear spray. You throw a bottle of coca-cola at them and we're good. I do a good amount of hiking in the mountain so occasionally run into black bears but I was always told this rhyme about running into them. “If it's brown, lay down. If it's black, fight back. If it's white, goodnight”

Poland HAS brown bears! As well as wolves, Euroasiatic lynx (Lynx lynx), and wild cat (Felis silvestris). The wolf population is steadily growing, no one knows exactly how many there are, but at least a few thousand (there are no recent studies), and wolves were seen in almost all forested areas. We also have sightings of the GOLDEN JACKALS! :D Greetings from Poland ;)

We had a bear attack in Sweden last year, a father and his 15 year old son who was out hunting got attacked.. The dad got one shot off before he was forced to the ground and the bear ontop of him.. The 15 year old son ran up and punched the bear so hard that he broke his own arm, but he managed to get the bears attention long enough for his dad to reload and get another shot off which killed the bear.. Both survived, the dad had to do some surgery but he was back on his feet pretty quick..

Well as a Norwegian who grew up in bear country here in Norway, never seen, heard or met any bears. And brown bears are the same as grizzlys in America. Hiking, nature and animals are a huge part of our culture and idenity, we do it sinc before we can walk, on the backs of our parents in a carrying device for smaller kids, and never been affraid of wildlife let alone predators and we have eagles, bears, wolves, wolverines, lynx, badgers, poison snakes etc. Also Europe is a continent not one single monolith country, culture, people, language or society. These animals vary depending on where in Europe you are…

This. Bells. Make noise. Don't be excessive, but if you don't sound like a prey animal, they will likely leave you alone. Their sight isn't great, but their hearing and sense of smell especially is excellent. Experiments done showed a brown bear could smell meat from something like 15+ miles away, which is why bear spray is particularly effective in the first place. But they don't generally want problems with people, and unless it's a polar bear you'll likely be fine if you aren't too close to them, and they aren't a momma with cubs. If that last is the case, just... pray you have a vehicle very close at hand.

I grown up in Romania, every summer we saw 2-3 bears. They ran from us as soon they saw us. Nowdays they don't want to attack either, but the mindless deforestation left them without their natural food. They don't want to starve, so they try to find food where ever they can get. Even looking to the peoples trash. Thats how they get in contact with the people. But I never accuse them to be aggresive, they just want to survive. The peoples are those who must be blaimed for their attacks.

Bears are (were) present almost everywhere in Europe. But unfortunately, when bears do appear, they are often hunted and shot. There were/are also bears in Austria/Switzerland/Germany from time to time, but they mostly migrate from Italy/Spain (I don't know exactly about France...). And many Germans are very stubborn (to put it simply), it's like wolves, they are either immediately caught and relocated or shot! Just as an example. In Germany, we have around 820 (2024) wolves spread across the country. That doesn't sound like a lot, but here the possibility of wolves not getting close to humans is very small, as we have a lot of people on a relatively small area of land and the habitat for wolves is relatively small. That's why there are usually more wolves (and bears) in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia

In Switzerland, the most dangerous ‘wildlife’ are probably ticks and cows. In some areas, up to 25% of all ticks carry Lyme disease, resulting in about 50 infections per year and 100’000 inhabitants. Much rarer is encephalitis with only about 1 infection per year and 100’000 inhabitants. Cows have killed about one person per decade in Switzerland, this is similar in Austria. I once encountered a wolf in the forest at night, though it was so dark I couldn’t see more than a vague shadow a few meters ahead and I am basing this on the growling sound it made. A few days later a wolf was hit and killed by a car nearby.

Hello Graham Family. In Poland we have brown bears. On date 28 April 2024 The Regional Directorate of State Forests in Poland say thad we have about 150 bears on 3 areas: 1. Bieszczady, Beskid Niski, Beskid Sądecki i Gorce, 2. Tatry, 3. Beskid Śląski i Żywiecki. The most 80% of bears are in Bieszczady. According to the ministry's data in 2016-2021 there were 154 bear attacks on people in the country. 158 people were injured and 14 more were killed. I hope that I have solved the problem of lack of information about bears in Poland.

Statistically, bear spray is more effective at deterring a charging bear. In a study done in 2008 (Smith et. al. 2008), researchers analyzed 83 bear spray incidents (61 brown bears, 20 black bears and two polar bear). Red Pepper spray proved over 90% successful on stopping the bear’s “undesirable” activity. 98% of people involved in these incidents were unharmed by the bear. However, fourteen percent of the incidents resulted in negative side effects upon the human (they were effected by the spray) and three percent left the user incapacitated. In similar study on firearms (Smith et. al. 2012), they were effective 84% with handguns and 76% with rifles to stop bears from undesirable behavior. The study analyzed 269 bear-human conflicts in Alaska from 1883-2009. The study said, “firearm bearers suffered the same injury rates in close encounters with bears whether they used firearms or not.” Basically, firearms didn’t statistically keep people from getting injured by bears. This means that people shot bears that still attacked them. They concluded by saying, “Our findings suggest that only those proficient in firearms use should rely on them for protection in bear country.” (Copyright The Wildlife Society). I think we would all like to think we are “proficient” but the truth is, even as hunters, we all aren’t. Firearm accuracy in the heat of a fast, stressful and real-life situation isn’t easily tested.

I’ve never heard of anyone using this approach, but I recall reading one way you could simulate a high stress environment to practice gun proficiency was on a one on one lesson with a firearms instructor where he lights a string of firecrackers next to you without your knowledge and he’s prepared to tackle you if you point your gun anywhere but down range. I acknowledge it was in a novel, but that definitely would provide a controllable situation to work under stress.

Mountain lions have also been known to attack and kill people in the US, mostly joggers, as they stimulate the big cat's instinctive flee-chase response. Bison and elk kill unwary people too, on occasion, though it's much rarer.

Wolves used to be in Britain as well, however a law in England in 1281 ordering the extermination of all wolves meant they were extinct in England in by the early 1500s, another law in Scotland in 1427 later lead to the exinction of wolves in Scotland. Wolves had been extinct since the late 1100s in Wales supposedly. Bears had gone extinct much earlier but not due as much to intentional extermination or over-hunting. They had been rare on the Islands before the Romans came in the 1st-5th Century due to climate change, then the Romans began importing bears from the continent for fighting and display which did increase their numbers somewhat. However not enough were brought over and very rarely were they released to the wild that they eventually became extinct by the end of the 6th century. Because of that the British isles do not have any large predators, this has meant we've had to manage the deer and boar populations ourselves. It has made it safer for us to walk in the woods but it also means we'll never get to see them in their natural habitats unless we go abroad.

There is a so much incident with bears, from new year 10x,and they are even in some 50K citizens towns and starting to go where never been before, even on plains near Nitra, what is absolutely crazy. 2-3 were seen at czech's Beskydy mountains side few day ago, so in few months, they will be pushed away, because they are protected and because of thier outnumbering.. just wait. We change laws, to may kill some problematic, but only if they enter intravilans of villages or towns. And because they have problem with small space for adecvate teritory, they will be push go around Slovakia

Though the case of the woman killed in Yellowstone was a hiker, it’s amazing more people don’t get killed there. People get out in front of their cars to try and pet huge animals like Bison and moose. 🤦‍♀️

To repel bears, try using a signal horn. They are light weight and easily carried. They blast a powerful sound that will repel animals of all sort. They also become handy should one get lost or disoriented.

For bears, in AK, we attach small bells to our packs. The bears have bad eyesight, but they will hear those dang bells and move away.

If you want to avoid being attacked by bears, you must be heard when you walk in the forest. Most often, bears try to avoid people, if they hear that people are coming, they go away. Most bear attacks happen when the bear is surprised. Especially if it's a female with bear cubs. If you still get close to a bear, then you should never run. A bear is much faster and their hunting instinct is triggered. You should talk calmly to the bear and slowly back away. It applies to brown bears, polar bears are a completely different matter. As for wolves, they are rarely dangerous to humans. Most often they have rabies if they attack people. Here in Sweden, we don't have rabies, so it's not a problem here.

The thing is once a bear attacks a human they are more likely to continue doing it so they have to put down the bear. Bears that have gotten a taste if human will start hunting humans for food.

Speaking of bears, in Slovenia we have largest bear population per area in Europe. We have about 1500 of them. There are so many they even export them. Population of bears in northern Italy, French and Spanish Pirenees largely consists of bears brought from Slovenia.

what is missing in this videos, is rating of the cows! because cows kill by FAR more people than predators, also because we hold millions in small stables and have close contact to them. Farmers get kicked, stabbed with horns (thats why dehorning is a thing) and trampled, squished between cow and wall...
