Grade 1 Music Theory - Rhythm

Rhythm notation and reading music. Learn how to read and write rhythms, get familiar with the different types of notes and rests, how long they all last and most importantly, what they all sound like. Suitable for candidates preparing for ABRSM Grade 1 music theory. Rhythm is one of the most important parts of modern music notation and is a fundamental part of music theory. Rhythmic lengths are usually represented by differences in the head or tail of a note. This music theory lesson will get you familiar with the most common types of notes, which are as follows. The Semibreve (also known as a Whole Note) which lasts for four beats, the Minim (also known as a Half Note) which lasts for two beats, the Crotchet (also known as a Quarter Note), the Quaver (also known as an Eighth Note) and finally the Semiquaver (also known as a Sixteenth Note). Notes can be lengthened by adding a dot after the note head, which increases the note's value by half. This allows us to have notes which last for say six beats, three beats and even notes that last one and a half beats. Each rhythmic value has an equivalent rest, representing a period of silence. All these elements together give us the basics of rhythm in music.

I learned them as BRAVE and Semi BRAVE instead of Semi Breave or BREVE and Minim (the rest all the same), but in MIDI programming I use the American ways as they are more related with direct quantize value. Thank you for the learning.

@@MusicMattersGB Thank you! I`m looking forward to learn a lot. Although i read, "knowledge destroys love" by J. Krishnamuri. In the sense of, you observe a tree and when you give the tree a name, the thought of the name disturbs the moment you observe the tree. while you listening to any kind of music, do you think all the time "oh there he did this and there he left this." ? Or do you enjoy the music without thinking ? Let the music work your brain.

Thank you for sharing your precious knowledge with us, Mr. You're brilliant, sir. I was inspired by "Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Saint-Saëns", and therefore I want to take violin classes in near future (I am 20 by the way, I don't think to become professional, but for just getting new hobby and getting into music world, I want to learn playing violin). Therefore, I thought to start with basic music theory before commence to attend in violin class.(Because I don't have any musical background, I just want to create idea on my brain about "What is the music? "). And to conclude, I would say, your videos are so instructive and helpful to me. Thanks again and again.

Hi. Have a look at our online Theory course at www.mmcourses.co.uk/p/music-theory-grades-1-to-8 This covers everything you list. It’s explained step by step written down so you can see how to put it together and played with the piano keys lighting up on the screen so you can hear it all and see the notes. We have other courses too eg on Counterpoint. The multi-dimensional approach we take makes it better than trying to grasp theory from a book. Enjoy!

Hello, i was born and raised in the US in PA. When i first began my music education from my mother, she did use the original terms widely used in the UK. I didn't know there was a difference until the American text books changed later in elementary school level. Then music education became a bit confusing. I don't know why trems here were changed. I prefer original terms because it bridges a gap in reading and understanding very old music. Also, did you know in America, some churches no longer use hym books with music to follow along? It gets boring fast. I miss when churches had a hym book to see what we are singing.Thank you for these videos as im having fun on my free time watching the vidoes all in order.🎶

the way I have always remembered which is the semibreve rest and which is the minim is to imagine the stave as a water line and to think that the 'heavier' 4 beat brick would be below the water line, and the 'lighter' 2 beat brick would float on the surface of the water. got to remember that they are on different staves still, though :)

very clear and good explanation, these videos are well done with a straight structure. the only thing I noticed the pause of the crotchet, there are different means to write them...here in Italy in old theory books are written like a double "quaver pause", which means something like a "Z" , rather than an inverted quaver pause.

My mother taught piano lessons for many years. In the U.S. we refer to a memory aid as a "pony". The ones she taught her students included the "whole" rest "looks like" a hole in the ground and the half rest "looks like" a hat. I don't know about other parts of the world but, here in the United States, one of the most common "mistakes" in music is for people to not give the "rests" their proper value. Thus, if the last measure of a musical phrase in 4/4 time includes a dotted half note and a quarter rest, some people will play (or sing) the three-beat note and then give the quarter rest half of its allotted value - so the measure gets only 3-1/2 beats before they begin to play (or sing) the first note of the next phrase. I sometimes wonder aloud how such people can manage to walk. Would they trip themselves if they tried to walk the way they "count" the beats in a song?
