GRAD SCHOOL VLOG: bad news, new laptop!, & primary source analysis for a dissertation case study

Thanks for watching a supporting my PhD journey ❤️
In this vlog, I find out some bad/sad news (I didn't get a fellowship for next year), I buy a new macbook pro, and I go into detail about my analysis of vlogs for my dissertation. I talk a looot about my first case study (Brooke Miccio). As always, I try to balance research, writing center tutoring, teaching, and living a full life outside of academia.

Something I’ve been thinking about lately regarding bloggers and lifestyle creators is the way that the audience is almost their mirror, literally, in get ready with me videos. Like, they are looking in the mirror/camera while doing their makeup and looking at themselves but also looking at us as their mirror. I feel like I’m not expressing myself clearly but I feel like that phenomenon is a unique form of audience involvement and intimacy!

Oh I LOVE this! This works especially well alongside a theory of person digital diaries as both “mirrors” and “veils” by Serfaty that I’m using!

I honestly cannot wait for your diss to be finished and hope I will be able to access and read it! As someone who wants to be a professor one day and knows that will include teaching first-year comp, I think your research is so important and hope I will be able to use it to inform my teaching. Just what you have talked about so far in your vlogs has really made me consider how I approach helping students as a writing tutor.

At around 20 minutes, when you had made that Discovery and explained why it was so fascinating to you… I was pretty blown away! I'm not doing my dissertation in rhetoric but your passion for your topic, and how you describe it to others, is so refreshing and inspiring! And I also bit the bullet and bought a new MacBook and I'm obsessed! After all the work you've been doing and with your teaching Award, you deserve it! Oh and Purelli is the cutest cat ever! And I'm sure I butchered the spelling of her name… lol!

Hi Sarah, I learned about your channel from Kaelyn! I’ve really been enjoying your videos. I live in nyc but I’m from Ohio, and idk if this is strange but your videos remind me of home in a sense, from all the stores that I miss to your general sweet nature that I associate with the region. I hope to apply for PhD programs this fall. Thanks for all you do!

I just got two rejections in the last 10 days from a fellowship and a travel grant. It’s been really frustrating because I know my letters of recommendation are great, I’m sure involved with volunteering and building community on campus, and I’m a productive researcher (lots of conferences, papers, etc). I literally don’t know what I’m doing wrong with my applications and the only solace I have received is on of my letter writers saying “you were a really good candidate. I swear you have to be Mother Theresa to win these things”. It’s not the end of the world to not be selected but it really sucks. I feel like I’m in the mid-PhD point where it is more difficult to be selected and there are fewer funding options. There’s so much for first/second year students and then there are dissertation completion grants/fellowships, but nothing in between 😭 Maybe I’ll get better news on my next app

Ugh. Hate that you are experiencing this, but I hope this video gave you some company and reminded you that you're not alone! You are absolutely correct are mid-career grad students being overlooked. I remember really noticing a shift in things after I finished coursework. Keep going! Choosing to believe that it will work out

Oh so you're doing this as a kind of literary analysis method?

  • @SarahFischerVlogs

1/2 of one of my 4 chapters includes this kind of analysis, but the rest of the diss is more theory building from published works in the field and also drawing on students’ writing/vlogs from an IRB approved course!

M3 MacBook Pro is overkill. Wayyyyy too much money, even if on sale, for the kind of work you'll be doing. You can get even more performance for video editing on some windows machine. Not even engineers shell out for this kind of thing. But if you like it, you like it. Being crystal clear for others on zoom is a client side setting, people with low res screens wont see a benefit.
