Circling back here again to thank you for the series on the Graco sprayer. I had previously dabbled at spraying finishes using an HVLP system but was always frustrated with the process and the results. After watching your series, I decided to give airless spraying a try. Just finished my first project with the Graco Ultramax, priming and painting a medium sized bookcase. The learning curve was about 2 hrs combined learning how to use the sprayer and practicing on some cardboard panels, then off to the real job. Even if not perfect, the results may well be the best paint job I've ever done. Just really happy now to have this capability available to me. So thanks again.

One reason you have had great battery life is because the Ultra Max (same as TC Pro Plus) has a brushless motor. The standard Ultra (same as the TC Pro) has a brushed motor that isn't as efficient. Most of the advertising portrays the only difference between the models being that the Max/Plus versions can spray solvents etc, but the brushless motor is also a factor. Great video!

Hello Peter, I just wanted to thank you for all your videos on spraying techniques and sprayers - incredibly helpful. Finally I purchased the Graco Ultra (like you I rarely use spirit based paint) and with all your videos I felt so much more confident and started with a real advantage. As you say, it pumps out a lot of paint and on my first jobs I got runs etc. after putting pieces to dry, even with the dial at the backset to 5. Once that was turned down to 3 or 4 it worked perfectly. So, as a tip for anybody using one for the first time, I recommend setting the dial to a lower setting and turn it up if necessary. Thanks again - keep it up.

I still find a little £3 roller and decent Dulux trade paint gives a good enough finish for most of my customers. I sprayed my kitchen and the time it takes to get all set up and clean up is crazy. Obviously the finish is better. Great video. Would love one of these sprayers but cost is a bit high for me. Keep up the good work Peter.

Thanks! ‘Good enough’ is all I aim for tbh, though a sprayed finish is better, I find, and faster. If you haven’t tried them then ‘two fussy blokes’ 4” rollers are really good. And I went for this Graco airless because the cleanup and setup time is very fast compared to other spraying systems - if it took longer than 10 minutes, I simply wouldn’t do it 👍👍

In the User Manual for latex paint, the minimum Ora five for Primers and Interior Latex paints is .014 in. Or .36mm. I think using a smaller practice like a 310 puts too much strain on the pump and wears it out quicker. The compatible tips size is in the user manual on Page 15. Cheers!

Very informative as usual, the spray series was what got me into watching your channel regularly as I got into spraying around then as well. I went for a Fuji Spray HVLP system but it was a close run thing with the Graco. Shame you're not closer to me as I'd lend you my system for a few days so you could do a compare and contrast video. One definite benefit of the Graco is how much quieter it is, the HVLP sounds like an aircraft taking off! Great finish though so I can't really complain.

Thanks! I’ve no regrets buying the Graco given the job I bought it for, but if I hadn’t needed the portability / easy colour change / easy cleaning, then I’d have looked closely at HVLP - and I may still. And yes, the ‘turbine whine’ of HVLP can be quite painful - even in my little cheapo one! 👍👍

I have the Graco Ultra Cordless. I tried initially with Johnstone's Acrylic Durable Eggshell and it went on really nice straight out of the can. However on another job I was using Johnstone's Aqua Water Based Undercoat which clogged up the standard filter and caused spluttering. I had to water this paint down for the gun to work. Thought I'd pass this on.

Howdy doodle Pete, For 600 smackers you could get a decent belt driven compressor and a good lvlp spray gun kit from Fast Mover in Dunstable direct or from Fleabay or Amazon. The kit comes in a nice case with foam insets the bits live in. You get the gun with 1.3 set up in the gun and a 1.8 set up for thicker paints, tool kit for cleaning, 10 filters, bench mounted gun stand, inline water filter and inline pressure regulator with gauge all for around 78 of your finest British pounds. All the best Pete and gr8 vids as always.

Although we don't have those paints here in the states you can probably do what I have done to adjust the sheen. Take 50% of the 10 and box/mix together with 50% of the 30. The color may not be perfect since it is a mix of the two and the batches could be slightly different. But if the supplier manufactures to tight specs it will be so close batch to batch the difference will be indistinguishable.

Thanks. Yes, I have done this, and whilst it worked well (paint manufacturer) Tikkurila don’t recommend it and to be frank it’s the kind of messing about (mixing/thinning paints) that I went with airless to avoid! And it could all be avoided if they made the paint in a 20% sheen 🤷‍♂️👍👍

Thanks for the update, Peter! I'm not sure how the sprayers are bundled there, but in Canada it seems the Ultra vs. Ultra Max cordless sprayer bundles are the same with the following differences: Ultra: 514 spray tip 4 32 oz flex liners 60 mesh filter Sprays only non-flammable finishes Works with standard threaded airless pray tip extensions Ultra Max: 514 and 210 spray tips 6 32 oz flex liners 60 and 100 mesh filters Sprays non-flammable and solvent-based finishes Uses proprietary composite (non-conductive) threaded spray tip not compatible with standard extensions So it would appear that the Ultra Max offers some extra value to offset its added cost IF the user can benefit from the additional 210 tip and finer 100 mesh filter, but doesn't need the added flexibility of using extensions (I was unable to find extensions for this model while searching online). Great video, keep up the good work! Question regarding finishing of MDF: do you find the end grain of MDF absorbs finishes requiring additional priming? This SEEMS to be the case when I read up on it, yet I haven't noticed you priming the ends of your boards. Is this somehow an advantage of the airless sprayer? The grade of MDF material? Just curious. Thanks!

  • @10MinuteWorkshop

    @10MinuteWorkshop

    5 жыл бұрын

That’s really interesting, thanks! No, the scope of delivery is identical here between the Ultra and Ultramax - the only difference is the machine AFAIK. Certainly I didn’t get a 210 tip or the 100mesh filter included in my package, and only 3# 1-litre flexliners 🤷‍♂️ Re MDF edges, I’ve never done anything special to them, other than priming and sanding. I did a 6-part painting & finishing series way back before I was spraying (starts video #029) but the principle is the same; start with a decent quality, preferably MR (moisture resistant) MDF and sand it to P180. Prime it, and sand it back to P240 when dry. If you’re painting both sides of the board you can prime it again when you do the other side, otherwise, apply 2-3 topcoats, de-nibbling in between. That’s it! That’s all I’ve ever done, and it’s worked well for me. But you do need to start with decent MDF 👍👍

I bought one of these about 4 months ago. (actually the corded one, because I wanted to save weight with no battery) but have not been impressed. It's nothing against Graco, I love Graco, I use my 650 Hi-Boy almost every day! Anyway the first day I used my handheld, the internal pump went out :( took it back to SW and they fixed it ASAP (had to replace the entire internal pump). Another major issue is your really should consider is you have to have fresh paint, or meticulously strain your material, otherwise this thing is going to clog in a few seconds. There isn't much room to have anything but a think screen for a filter, and not much horsepower to power through those little clogs. These things are heavy! I already mentioned how I tried to save weight with buying the corded option. but if you are actually using this thing for more than 5 minutes, good luck! maybe I'm just a weakling! Lastly and most notably cleaning your Graco HandHeld SUCKs! you've just dropped around $500 on your new little handheld, of course you are going to take care of it right? Let me tell you, I can clean my regular airless sprayers in 1/2 the time it takes to clean this little thing. I average 7-10 rinses before I get clear water remaining in my reservoir, and that is with doing a thorough pre rinse of every thing, including the canister lid, filter, and reservoir. These things are great if you just need to do a door or 2 even 3 real quick, or maybe some trim in 1 room. would I recommend one of these? NO! save your money and buy a 395!

Just a tip for you, save wetting the cloth on the tip and putting your glove on it, if you put the strayer tip guard down in a bucket, then put water in the bucket so it just covers the tip, you can keep the sprayer filled with paint for hours inberween coats :) Also where did you get your round Velcro hand sander from? I can’t find it anywhere and it looks really useful :)

Good stuff, thanks. Your videos and some others motivated me to get a Graco Ultramax cordless. When I get it right, it is fantastic, but I'm still very much in the learning phase. I did have a similar situation yesterday where it went all spitty and it was the final finish on the fronts of a couple of cabinet doors. I didn't want to have to sand all that back (again), so I thought I had nothing to lose and quickly got a 100mm (4") wide brush and hand painted over the big blobs. Then after properly priming the gun, resprayed over the door and found it was fine. Cheers, David.

I use the solvent based model and find it's a pain in the @** to clean properly. It is my go-to unit in the shop, as I don't do much spraying and like not having to drag a hose. I have an HVLP cup gun if I need a backup, which came in handy as mine too had the pump replaced under warranty just a week. I bought mine in May and I'd guess I've sprayed around 10 gallons through it. And although I hate the chemicals, the lacquers can't be beat for finish quality and durabilty.

I purchased mine the other day and collected it/used it for the first time yesterday off the back of your “playing at spraying” series. When I saw this video I was worried you were going to say not to bother getting one! I purchased mine with the intention of spraying a stain then a top coat of clear (specifically Morrells pre-cat lacquer). I know you only use paints/primers but would you recommend doing this? I can imagine cleaning it would be difficult with water as the lacquers are not water based. Thanks again!

Less than 10 minutes to set up & strip down - see video #251 ‘spraying aftermath’ for a real-time demo. For me if it needed 3 coats over 3 days then probably not as the space is either a workshop or spray booth, not both - but most paints I use are re-coatable much faster than that. 👍👍

Hi Peter great content I’ve a couple of questions if you don’t mind. I’ve watched a few of your spraying videos I’ve recently purchased the ultra max and used it for the first time and it kept blocking which was incredibly frustrating I was using water based primer undercoat that had been well watered down but every minute or so it just blocked up. I’ve just seen that you changed to the 100 mesh filter and you say it has stopped the blockages you also said in one of you videos that you may have put the tip in wrong please could you explain that because I want to get everything correct as it’s a great tool I’m sure but I will stop using it if I can’t get it to work as it’s ment to many thanks in advance

Hi and thanks! Long story short I’ve abandoned the graco after the pump failed again. I won’t buy another. I had a faulty tip originally, that didn’t seat correctly, causing the overspray. I also had a lot of blockages, but switching to a 100-mesh filter (Graco 100 mesh filter - bit.ly/graco_mesh) made a world of difference. When it was working it was a great machine, and did everything it was bought for, but I’m afraid it let me down too many times. 🤷‍♂️

Very interesting video Peter, thank you. It is certainly a neat little sprayer. What is the mm diameter of a 310 tip? Those lumps it spits out almost look like partly congealed paint, probably partly drying in the reservoir I guess. I find 2 amp batteries good, less weight, you can really feel the weight of the big ones if spend a few hours with a battery impact driver. Thanks again Peter.

  • @10MinuteWorkshop

Thanks Bob! Graco say the 310 tip has an ‘orifice of 0.01 inches’ which is 0.254mm. These tip sizes don’t really relate to eg needle sizes on hvlp though, so it’s hard to make a comparison. 👍👍

I love all your articles where you are cutting and joining materials. I have taken inspiration from your approach and techniques and this has improved the quality and efficiency of my work. But I shudder at the thought of glueing, nailing, clamping, sanding and painting. Almost all of my jobs are done using Egger decorative MFC with ABS edging, connected with Dominos and Kreg pocket hole screws, and finished with HPP's Vinyl doors, drawers and sliding doors. Once cut and drilled everything can be taken to site flatpack style and assembled in situ. And as soon as it's up, there's nothing more to do. It may marginally restrict my offerings but I don't regret it for a second. But there are two factors that may be affecting my decisions - my unheated workshop is even smaller than yours - and my boredom threshold is very low!

@@10MinuteWorkshop Ah, and I have watched that before! The 2400 LR32 is probably more useful for shelving layout anyway, when you've got the taller bookcases/cabinets. My Fiesta hatch can only just fit 96" lumber in it, so the extra 10" on the FS 2700/2 would undoubtedly not fit. I've been figuring an FS 1900 would mate up nicely with my FS900 for ripping down sheets, be perfect for 5x5 baltic birch, and conveniently fit in the car to haul around.

@@jonyoungstow I don't disagree; I bought mine for one specific job, which paid for it, but for this kind of money you expect more, e.g. a longer warranty. And yes, my first pump failure was after bringing it out again after a period of being laid up, so I'm not at all sure how it'll be when I come to use it again. And of course, I'll embrace whatever people want at the time; right now it's not a lot of painted stuff, but a lot of Birch ply & veneer. 🤷‍♂️

Peter Millard I don’t know about you Peter but it seems they’re looking to profit hard on the consumables. A car can run for 200,000 miles with multiple moving parts yet a simple spray unit can’t manage to pump more than 500 litres. If only Dyson invented one....

Hey, it paints itself white! 😂😂 I had to spray the recent ‘fluted face-frame bookcases’ as complete units, and you get a lot of bounce-back when you do that. 🤷‍♂️👍

John Goulding Yes, I’d look at a cheap hvlp, personally, something a step up from the basic Terratek, there seem to be plenty on Amazon. Sorry, don’t know where you are in the world, but Lidl & Aldi stores both have cordless hvlp units available, if that’s of particular interest. 👍
