It's not confirmation so much as it is complimenting each and yes we must. Its her natural beauty that's the big deal. She didn't conform to "societies" "idea" of what beauty is. And besides that..people love it when we're at each others throat but to say something positive is an issue.. Trust that our love for who we are is an absolute must. I love everything..enemies and all..and that's hard sometimes but I love black different because we're the ones that get each others struggle. Hence, only a non black person or one who dislikes his own color would need to ask that question. We don't have to include "others" while building up each other. We know all races are beautiful but we hear this through every avenue all over television. Its nice to know that we can acknowledge it our dang self and need not be questioned as to why. I appreciate your perspective but you'll never understand my friend.

Thaleya1: Don't worry there was *always* elders saying "your generation copy mine" yet new stuff keep being invented lol. ;) Grace jones reproduced David Bowie or Marlene Dietrich photoshoots back in the days and it didn't stop her from creating stuffs. Now it's her turn to be copied by people who can come up with new things as well. Actually pretty much all the things an artist do were already done before. Even geniuses rarely have more than a few REAL innovations in their career. And Grace had one white stripes outfit with at some point in her career so someone having white stripes is now copying her if you listen to this journalist...? There is clearly some stretches going on in this itw lol.

I saw her in Atlanta at a 24hr dive bar called the cove. She was just playing pool but she was so captivating that everyone just looked at her moves in awe. At the same time I was in full view of the rising star of Rupaul in his teens being just as real and making his own moves in show biz and to me they seemed in common in their natural stardom. Wow I never thought I'd be saying I miss the eighties but they were some good times for artists to flourish.

Grace is a great performance with tons of personality ... what she said about Lady Gaga might be true but its also a mean thing to say ...its like saying no one should try to be artistic and expressive unless they have a big charisma, but art is for everyone to have fun with, not just people like her ..

Lady Gaga‘s music was different and more or less unique at the start of her career back in 2008 and while I do agree with you she has decided a more toned down sound for herself now, this does not coincide with her personality. While the music was outlandish and vibrant at the start, you don’t know what her personality was like and being a celebrity obviously is about having a public image. It’s easy to promote a false image about yourself, the artist or the person who brings the music to their fans. It’s like social media we all share what we personally want to share. Speaking from personal experience and the fact that I go to an art college (i’m surrounded by all types of different ppl who like to express themselves through art) I think it’s more common for artists to suffer from mental health issues or face more personal problems with their mental health and I can see Lady Gaga as someone who could’ve been going through a lot of things more then than now obviously. So I don’t see what Grace Jones said as a insult more as advice.

I think what Grace said about Lady Gaga is completely true. Once Stephanie said that she invented herself after sexual assault and being dropped by music labels, like she was trying to create someone over who she could express her pain and could be stronger than her. Then we realized in the Joanne era that she was struggling with herself. I'm impressed about how well she did read Lady Gaga's mental health through her visuals.

It's ridiculous how everyone forgets that LADY GAGA literally invented the modern futuristic look of the pop/electronic scene. Ever since Gaga hit the scene everyone kept copying her look or had similar visuals like her, for example: Kesha, David Guetta, The Black eyed Peas, Pitbull, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Eva Simons, The Cataracs, DEV, Flo Rida, Jay-z, Taio Cruz... Literally everyone of that time got inspiration from Gaga in their music and fashion.

I love Grace, and she is right to a certain degree. I feel like designers and stylists are to blame as well here a lot of times. If they are inspired by certain artists/eras, it can easily happen that a garment looks similar to precisely the particular moment in time they want to pay homage to. We should not forget that there's a huge creative team making decisions behind every person she criticized here. Her team has probably never been as big as Rihanna's or Gaga's, hence why she feels like every decision she makes is more independent. At the same time, I think that's what has probably kept her from becoming a much bigger brand and recognized artist. It feels like she is demanding her rightful place by moaning about other current artists sometimes. Even when they haven't really been inspired by her sound but much more by her style and persona. She sometimes forgets that she had the privilege to just come before the younger generation of artists and that she has been dressed by a lot of designers who have probably been influenced by other (earlier) eras and looks as well. There is no such thing as 100% originality because we don't live in a vacuum. That doesn't change anything about the fact that she is a trailblazer and icon in her own right.

Grace has said many of times that she doesn’t want to be mainstream. She got a taste of it once and never looked back. She said there is a lot more freedom in being an underground artist, which quite obviously there is. Look at Prince for example, when he was at his peak of fame he wasn’t allowed as much control as he’d like to have. As well he didn’t make as much money from his sales because the company was taking almost more than half of his earnings. It’s better for artists to be one with their audience. Smaller artists get to play clubs and smaller venues. It’s better that way, they truly mean more. What would you rather be doing, charging £700 a concert ticket like Adele? Selling out to the rich and not giving your fans of a working class background a chance? Or be like Prince and Grace playing small venues that are closer to everybody? I know what I’d rather do.
