Grace and Frankie - Did it achieve what it wanted to?

Grace and Frankie is a pretty iconic show starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, it tackles a bunch of topics around the joys and pitfalls of aging but it's not as unappealing as that sounds.

I love Grace and Frankie. It does tackle some ageism issues. Hopefully we'll see more shows like this in the future .

My Mum got me into Grace and Frankie. She's watched the series multiple times and we watch it together when both of us feel down 😊

My biggest gripe about how the show ended was they never seriously addressed Grace's extremely obvious alcohol and pill addiction. And she even says, "alcoholism isn't funny" and the writers try to make her alcoholism funny it makes me so angry! As for all the other very reasonable complaints brought up in this essay... I just kept reminding myself during my like 9th rewatch or something that these are the same people who created Friends which leaned into stereotypes and the status quo social beliefs. They certainly took a few of them down in Grace and Frankie, but too few in my opinion.

Yes! I fully agree with you, I actually did a video on "alcoholism is relatable" and the toxicity of that trope because I noticed it so heavily in this show, and actually so many movies and pieces of media, it's really frustrating. I do wish they'd pushed things more in this show but you're totally right, the creators being behind Friends makes it make a lot more sense. Here's hoping we get more shows which centre older people challenging norms

I couldn't get through the last season. Too much contrived "hilarity." So I'm glad I got to see the short version of the end here. As for a success story about a senior living residence, I'll tell you one: I was "fixed up" as a friend with a woman who had just lost her husband at 85. I'm in my 60s and was already a 7-year veteran of being widowed. My new friend stayed in her house for another 3 years, then decided she was ready for a senior community. I spent the better part of a year investigating places, which were limited because she didn't want to venture far from her existing friends of 20+ years. She moved into a local independent living community, and lo and behold, she made new friends. The place went downhill, so she moved a few months ago to a new one that is much nicer, and she is happier than she's been in years -- since even well BEFORE her husband died. She has a lovely apartment, she has even MORE new friends, and weeks can go by and I don't hear from her. I am so proud of her and the progress she's made, and she doesn't look like either Grace OR Frankie. She just turned 89 this year and she says she has a "new lease on life."

It was meant to be a comedy not a documentary on aging nor do I think that assisted living is without its serious problems so a positive portrayal of it might no be entirely warranted.

Loved this show although a lot of my parents’ generation (who are that age) didn’t seem to as much. I think it was maybe a bit too romanticized for them.

That's so interesting! Did they give any reasons when you spoke to them? From reviews the only negatives I've seen are about the plastic surgery, filters and from the LGBTQIA+ community (for the reasons stated in this video)

Great video essay. I personally found this show hard to watch due to the wealth portrayed in it. I mean, we're already meant to identify with rich people, because, in pretty much all shows, people are very wealthy and their lifestyles are very different from like the vast majority of people in this planet, but you try to sympathize because there's no other choice if you want to consume media. However, the people in this particular show are mega wealthy. Yes, they're human too and their emotions are like everybody else's, but their available resources are so vastly different that it's actually hard to identify, especially for an audience which is so much younger and poorer. So, for instance, the assisted living issue can't be understood properly. It's hard to see these women as anything but stubborn. They're old and need help, so what's their deal? But imagine if these were two old women living in a council estate instead. These women would have very different challenges to face daily. Also their prospect for assisted living would be very different. They'd probably be taken to a place where they'd be neglected and deprived of their freedom. They probably wouldn't even have a room for themselves, and probably couldn't even be together. So they'd find it preferable to take their chances with the little freedom they've got, and the story would be the same, and their friendship very strong, but they'd face a far more relatable reality for most people in what's called "first world" countries, and also perhaps it would make you wonder about those in other countries who have it worse even. A show like that I'd like to see. It could explore the reality of assisted living for most of us, which is full of untrained and underpaid staff; it's underfounded if public and overly priced, and not necessarily better, if private. There isn't enough staff either way, and they're exhausted and burnt out, and abuse towards old people is sadly very commonplace. And these old people have NO WAY OUT. And there's the other side of the coin, which is family having to take care of their elders, because they can't afford anything else, at their own expense; and this is also supported by toxic traditional values which guilt people into doing it causing carers to suffer a great deal emotionally and get sick. This is actually a huge topic worth a lot of talking about, because we're all heading for old age and we all should feel happy to get older and not fear a prospect which, tragically nowadays, is still rather terrible. Considering all this, I personally have great understanding for old people who decide to team up together in old age and avoid assisted living as much as possible. Doesn't make as much sense for mega rich people who actually would live in a luxury hotel like place in comparison. Also, sadly most old people are actually on their own entirely. All this should seriously be talked about far far more, and solutions should be put in place so people are treated with respect and dignity, having their human rights respected all the way from birth until death, cos, for most old people this isn't so, and of things don't change now, all of us will be on the same boat as them soon enough.
