Go for TORQUE more than H.P. This will give you good throttle response straight off without having to build revs through every gear. This will give you better fuel range and be a lot better for your engine ware. I enjoy your channel and wish you best of luck with the rebuild and l am sure Larry will look after you. Best Regards from Adelaide, Australia.

I ride a '97 FXD with that same 510 S&S cam. Not especially lumpy at idle, but it works real nice with an air filter, pipes, and ignition. Lost a little low speed manners, but the midrange roll-on was greatly improved. Plus, it no upgrades to the top end needed. I'm not an interstate speed guy anymore, but for secondary highways, I can't imagine a bike that could put a bigger smile on my face.

All I can say as a former bike shop owner I'm retired now when you go to HD which I'm shocked they will do a EVO it's gonna cost a lot more than a independent shop. Hope you get it all figured out.

Building my shovel motor cost me less than 700 doing it myself. I suppose an evo from the bottom up wouldn't be much different in cost either.

@@grisslebear He's gonna need it. Most dealership hourly costs are $99 an hour or more. Less than $900 in parts and then another $9000 or so to get it done? My goodness. Now it's apparent how some folks get financially muscled into buying new bikes.

the big question is how much more do you wanna spend,im sure if you put in a bigger cam you are probably gonna have to buy stronger valve springs and who knows what else you will have to upgrade, so I guess its all up to how deep are your pockets

I run the Andrew's ev27 cam in my Evo they're all around great for performance and sound and can run stock heads(valve train). My motor is built other than heads. Bored 20 over, wiseco forged pistons,s&s quickie pushrods, Jim's lifters, cobra hp power pro 2-1 pipe, power commander v with auto tuner,18mm wideband sensors,BDL extra plate clutch kit and by God still running factory magnetic Marelli fuel injection on a 98 roadking anniversary with 90k miles, makes 80hp & 84ft lb torque.

I would just get a new engine. $10k+ is a lot of money to put into a bike repair.

Ultima 120 is 4k for the whole motor. Can get a complete S&S badass motor for 6k. Why in the world anyone would spend all this money rebuilding this at this point is not good financial responsibility lol.

I run a s&s 585 cam in my 104" sputhe engine. I love that engine man. Smooth lots of power. Easily smokes the tire and will pull front end up if paying attention. I have no complaints at all. I just did a complete overhaul. I went through exactly what your going through except it started with a failed lifter roller. Anyhow, i put a new s&s585 right back in that puppy.

when you get thru spending money, ask your self if you could sell the bike for what the repairs cost? forget the initial cost of the bike....do you think the 10 to 12 grand you are going to spend can be recouped? if the dealer is giving you a discount on parts and labor for the advertising--you need to disclose that to your listeners. that money would be better spent touring the country with your wife. jmo

Agreed. On the flip side, itcant believe they are throwing around numbers like 6k,8k, 10-12k. I jist did all that work he has to do and then some. Granted i pulled the engine myself. Amd put the engine back in myself, it only cost me about $3,500. The machine shop said they would charge $500 to pull engine. $500 to install engine. That would have put me at $4,500. Carillo pistons, core cylinders, new cam, new steel breather, new lifters

If this were my bike I would be concerned about the transmission, lack of warranty and putting $10K in to a bike thats worth $5K. Also your putting a lot of money into an engine that does not make as much power as the M8. Im just glad your able to get a lot of good KZread content out of this build and hopefully it will pay for it.

There is a butt load of scrap HD engines available. But this is a promotional feature, which to me is basically an info mercial. And I just can't get behind the stealership mechanics fresh outa U.T.I. gouging the crap outa people. Even the independents rape, pillage, and burn. So I do my own . Watch videos, read my book and buy tools. And that's my advice to anyone. If you're going to take up a hobby, get into it wholeheartedly. Or pay$$$. But you'll never love it unless you fix it yourself.
