GR Corolla - What They Didn't Tell You

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The GR Corolla has a lot more going on than you think. It's not just a GR Yaris transplanted in a Corolla Body.
The GR Corolla has had its own long engineering process to make it a bespoke car from the Yaris that it inherits its drivetrain. So let's dig into the engineering details and see what is actually under the skin of this rally hot hatch.

    “You can weep inside your GR Yaris” and their Ford Focus ST, Fiesta ST, Abarth 500, and probably a boatload more hot hatches that us humpback whale sized Americans with dirty fast food stained fingers can no longer touch (I say this as an American who is still hella salty the FiST and FoST are no longer sold here). In all honesty though, the GR Corolla is the only car I’ve seen in my short 25 and 3/4 life that I want to buy new. It’s AWD, 300 HP, looks wild AF, can come with LSDs on the base model, and overall just seems really sick. The only problem is the way my career and financial situation is looking, I’d have to sell drugs to ever afford one.

    The Abarth is no longer sold here either, Fiat pulled practically all models out of the USA. 2013 Abarth owner here. I have owned mine for 6 years so far and every day it puts a smile on my face. The car is stupid fun and cost peanuts. The GR Corolla on the other hand, is immediately priced out of every reasonable person's reach because it's going to cost $50-60k after dealer markups. FAR too expensive for what it offers.

    I feel like for myself personally living in a Midwest state with shitty winters, having a car like the GR Corolla would be the ultimate daily and worth the MSRP. Probably not any dealer markups though. If there were any better options that fit the bill of small, AWD, reliable, semi affordable sports cars, I’d be down. The GR has Toyota reliability, is AWD, a new car, is small for a modern car (being on the same platform as the Corolla XSE), and seems set to be a fucking riot. Nothing out there comes close. Also, I know about Abarth. I wish they were still sold here tbh. Supposedly Fiat in general has GARBAGE reliability and the 500 Abarths are kinda hard to find in my neck of the woods. So I probably won’t ever be able to afford one but damn if I could. There’s nothing out there like it.

  • @Tamarocker88

    @Tamarocker88

    @@djhero0071 The GR **could have had** Toyota reliability until they decided to squeeze 300 horses out of a turbocharged 3 cyl. Forged internals or not, the engine in this car is not going to be "toyota reliable" with bullet-proof engine life given the amount of boost it is pushing. Make no mistake, these will not be 250,000 mile engines. And that's not even considering the question of how long the complex AWD system will last, how long the LSD clutches will last, if they will have rear diff overheating issues like the GR Yaris etc...... Fiat not reliable? The facts beg to differ. Overwhelming majority of complaints on Fiats are extremely minor annoyances. Case in point: the biggest ding to the consumer reports on the cars were large numbers of complaints about the 2012-2013 infotainment systems or minor inconveniences like rattling interior panels. Nothing performance related. It's not like they have major engine or transmission issues or regularly blow up... If they did have garbage reliability, they would have gone under as a company decades ago. It's simply an undying mantra that people in the U.S. LOVE to parrot ever since Fiat first showed up. HURR DURR Fix It Again Tony!!! That being said, they definitely were less reliable vehicles when they first came to the US. That's why they didn't sell well and left the States. But they came back and faced an uphill battle given the undying perception that their cars were unreliable and the U.S. market's lack of interest in small cars. The platform the 500 Abarth is built on is tried and true. The MultiAir engines are pretty much perfected at this point. They're perfectly reliable and they're extremely popular commuter cars in Europe where people are not obsessed with SUVs You are right, though... There's nothing out there like the Abarth. The thing weighs practically nothing, handles twists and turns like no other. It absolutely dominates on track days, beating out cars with far more HP and performance specs on paper. It's a go-kart on speed and sounds better than most cars on the road thanks to the lack of a muffler (though its cousin the Dodge Neon SRT-4 gives it a run for its money ). Speaking of winter driving, I'm in the Northeast and the Abarth is a beast in the snow. It did great on my initial Blizzaks and this past winter I was using the Pirelli Cinturato snows and they were fantastic too.

    I’d like to believe that Toyota is making the GR Corolla to a high standard of reliability. Can stuff like the rear differential overheat or AWD system fail? Maybe. I’d like to believe that it’ll take a long while before it gets to that point though. This is the first true enthusiast daily Toyota has made in a LONG time; even though it’ll be rare and priced out of the range of most enthusiasts like myself, I want to believe the leadership and engineers are putting out a car that’s improved on the shortcomings of the GR Yaris and will be reliable. A lot of problems will probably be related to drivers ripping the shit out of them hooning them. As far as Fiat goes, you might be right since Fiat 500 Abarths aren’t rated separately from the regular 500s. The few threads I’ve read as well say they’re engineered well outside of some interior materials (which… what enthusiasts really care if it’s a used car ?). I’d still ultimately have deep snow to deal with though along with icy and slushy roads. I’d rather take my chances with AWD personally. I definitely respect the Abarth though, and would consider one if I could find one.

    I believe they said that the Circuit edition is a first-year only deal. Whereas they'll continue to make the Core edition in subsequent years. Changing the differentials gearing for even more agressive driving? Jeez, my GR Yaris hits 3k RPM at 120km/h, have to ride it at 80 to get any kind of daily driving fuel economy :D On the other hand, I don't have a GR Yaris for great fuel economy..

    This is going to be very short gearing! 1st and 2nd are already short on my gr Yaris. Redline in 1st is about 30mph, 2nd is 60mph. My car sits at 2500rpm at 60mph in 6th. Which is fine, but anything over 70mph and it sucks doen fuel and gets a bit noisy and abrupt with throttle transitions. Assuming the Corolla is 10% lower geared it won’t be fun on the freeways and will be a busy time from standstill!
