Say hello to the Toyota GR Corolla!
Mat has flown over to Japan to get his hands on the hot edition of Toyota’s family-friendly hatchback, and he’s about to find out what’s different to the standard car.
When it comes to the design, there are several exterior changes. Around the back, there’s an all-new rear bumper as well as three exhaust tips! Along the side, there are more vents to help airflow, while some side skirts are also added. Up front, there are vents on the bonnet to help air flow & cooling, while there’s also a much larger, more aggressive front bumper and grille.
Step inside and there are a handful of changes, including red stitching throughout, and part-Alcantara, part-leather seats. There are also aluminium pedals, bespoke GR dials, and of course, there’s a button for the switchable 4WD system too.
Under the bonnet, you’ll find the same 1.6-litre 3-cylinder turbo edition as in the GR Yaris. However, it’s been improved for the Corolla and comes with new pistons, so in this edition, it now produces 304hp and 370Nm!
But this isn’t all - Mat’s also got his hands on the special Morizo edition, which is limited to just 70 units! This comes with a handful of additional upgrades over the regular GR Corolla, including a special Matt paint and wider alloys. The back seats have also been stripped out and replaced by a big brace bar, while a few other elements have been stripped out to reduce the weight by 30kg.
So will Mat be a fan of the GR Corolla? And more importantly, will he think it’s about time Toyota released the car in the UK?! You’ll need to keep watching this video to see for yourself!

Toyota deserves soo much respect for the dedication to make the greatest version of the car they can and also being honest about it.I mean relocating the battery to the boot for weight distribution shows how obsessive they are.And every element is there for a reason. No fake vents, exhaust tips and such and even the third exhaust is there for a reason.Huge props to Toyota.

It's not the only car that does this. I drive a VW Polo GTI and it also has the battery in the boot (probably a combination of better weight distribution and the engine bay being taken up by the bigger engine). Not hating, by the way - I was an engineer for one of the key components for the GR Yaris (and, I guess, the Corolla too), and have a soft spot spot for these cars.

Just put 2000 miles in 4 days on my brand new Circuit edition. Took a road trip to Los Angeles and took care of the break in miles in one day. After that I drove it like I stole it and the car just loved being thrashed. Also went to Toyota fest in Long Beach it was a blast. The only thing that held me back was I had a Thule motion 3 XL roof carrier on top that limited my top speed on the highway but still got 26 mpg going 80 mph. What a car!!!!

German cars are also very cheap in Japan. A Golf VIII GTI costs just €32,000 (£27,000) there. In Germany, it costs upwards of €40,000, even though the car is built in Wolfsburg, Germany. The same thing happens when German cars are exported to the USA. A BMW 3 Series made in Germany is much cheaper in the USA than in Germany, even though all the transport costs are added on. They would make that Corolla much more expensiv for Europe.

Even if it is a three cylinder 1.6l, the engine were never design to prioritize the fuel efficiency. It's literally design to be powerful in a compact size engine. I did read an article about how a gasoline engine would have the maximum power while being fuel efficient if each cylinder isn't exceeding 0.5l. Any bigger than that is likely for power/performance reason.

It's actually pretty good on fuel I've often returned consumption of between 6-7L per 100km I was in disbelief when I got 6.0 but then it happened again that with aircon on but I got all green light speed limit of between 50-80km/h over 15-17km But more often I see 6.3-6.7 on the same trip so yeah for an almost 1500kg car with a performance heart I'd say that's quite frugal

If this came to Europe and the UK I doubt it would take any sales from a competitor like the Golf GTI Clubsport. The Golf is fractionally lighter (1461 vs 1475), has an extra cylinder and akrapovic options for the exhaust etc, as well as more convenience features. And then there will be Golf R/Audi S3 etc as well to consider at that price point. The GR Yaris makes more sense in Europe because there is nothing like it on the market. Just my thoughts 🤷‍♂️

couldnt have said it better myself... who would pay that money when you could get a Golf R or audi S3 which both look better IMO, the GR carola looks good now.. but its going to age terribly.. just like a lot of cars coming out right now.. trucks as well.. they are just going so insane with all the angles and flares.. and not in a good way.. but you can thrash on toyotas and they will last forever and keep their value.. Ive got mad respect for the brand.. but yea im buying a german hot hatch at that price point not a toyota that looks like it was designed for 15 year olds.

I owned a Morizo and a Yaris. Sold the Morizo and kept the Yaris only because the Yaris is much lighter. But that shorter ratio between 2nd and third on the Morizo gearbox was a peach. I wish they fitted it to the Yaris. It would have made a sensational car.
