I wish I did not sell my 4 banger Ranger. 25 MPG is not that bad. Neither was the 300,000 miles on it. But if I had to tow something under 6000lbs I used the Crown Vic. Yes the people did not like me pulling a trailer with the Ranger at 55 MPH. I used to use the Toyota FJ 60 but somebody really wanted it (stolen). Oh and also they did not like me doing 55 MPH. Sorry it was geared for 55MPH In the summer the FJ was in your way. In the winter your go faster was in my way. If I needed a pickup I rented it or a box truck. Hints: Must have Real ID to fly? Do not fly with more than $1000 in cash. Do not carry cash to pay for gas cross country or you may end getting it taken by law enforcement. Why? Because you may be doing something illegal. Good luck getting it back. Gibbs rules # 39, 36 & #3

So their focus is no longer making reliable vehicles, but instead, to make vehicles that get the best mileage possible. We, the users of the vehicles, for the most part will trade MPG for reliability and longevity, but nobody asks us!

I have a hybrid pickup truck (2012 gmc sierra) with active fuel management and I have 262,000 miles on the clock. I did experience lifter failure around the 250,000. mile mark. Make sure to change oil every 3000 miles especially is you have the 6.0 hybrid and AFM combined. The oil gets “watery” after 3000 miles and causes problems. If you change oil at 3000 you are less likely to get low oil pressure and have the dreaded collapsed lifter. I didn’t delete AFM but I have considered doing it. The hybrid setup has been great for work truck and towing duties. Also love crunching the gravel in electric mode driving in woods and desert in electric mode. After 262,000 miles the hybrid has saved so much money on gas the truck basically pays for its tires and repairs

Couldn't agree with you more! I had a 5.4L 2004 F150 that I bought new. It was a great truck. When I decided to get a new one in 2021, I searched high and low for a new V8 powered F150. Couldn't find one. All had twin turbo V6s. While these engines might be trouble free for a few years - like you - I keep my vehicles for a long time. I have been in the reliability business for many years and one thing I know: the faster a piece of equipment rotates the less reliable it will be and lubrication has to be flawless. Turbos can turn as fast as 100,000 rpm. Using your same logic, I ended up with a new 2021 Toyota Tundra with the 5.7L engine. Waiting till 2022 was out of the question because I knew that Toyota was also going to the twin turbo V6s in 2022. I'm older than you and very likely this Tundra will be the last vehicle that I own. I hope that your new Sierra turns out to be a great truck!

I have a 2017 5.3 V8 Silverado LT with AFM but does not have the start/stop. I got a Range Tech. module that plugs into the port below the steering wheel. This keeps it in 8 cyl. and I went from 16.3 average to 18.2 average gallons per mile. I didn't buy a truck for gas miles but with this module plugged in I have improved gas miles but the big thing for me is the tranny shifts better and that is better for the whole powertrain. The manual explains the adaptive nature of the transmission and since i read it the first day it was no surprise to me. If you by one used you can have the transmission reprogramed to for a fresh beginning or turn the adaptive feature off, It has been a great truck have had to spend 0 dollars on repairs.

Note that I drive it like an adult, stay ahead on maintenance, and don't abuse it but I can't see paying the asking prices for the new trucks. Regarding features, the '16 LTZ has everything and more than I need and will need in the future... carplay, sunroof, heated cooled seats, its effectively a luxury vehicle...etc. I never minded AFM as it did help out with mileage especially on long trips where, before I put a mild lift (king coilovers, UCA's, Deaver springs, etc) and 35's it would cruise down the interstate in "V4" and got decent mileage for a 6.2ltr V8... decent being a relative term. note: I still have AFM enabled and haven't melted a lifter yet. Since I am at those high miles, I am considering doing an AFM delete with an upgraded cam to eliminate the potential point of failure but at this point, I'm not really after too much more power but want the truck to last! I also bought a V8 Tundra. This was in 2021, and I can't claim I knew about the V6 turbo at the time. My wife, who owns a horse farm, said she needed 10,000 pounds of towing capacity and I didn't have to look anything up to realize I was in V8 territory. At that time, Ford, Ram, and GM could all sell you a V8. I knew about the cylinder shutoff thing but the statistics didn't lie -- the Toyota was the reliability king and none of its cylinders shut off. I asked my wife to drive it around the block and she said she didn't need to, if someone had to test drive it, let it be me. I was suitably impressed -- smooth, gobs of torque, it was even quiet with a roomy cabin. I signed the papers and then a few months after delivery we found out about the V6 turbo for the following year. I told my wife the Tundra was going to become a classic and might even appreciate in value. Nevertheless, it took time for me to get over my annoyance that I'd been the sap who paid $50,000 for a pickup. Having seen today's prices I can say I'm no longer a sap.

Government has no business or authority to dictate to auto makers what or how to build vehicles. Small turbo engines will not perform as well as a V8 or V6, turbos are pressurizing a small engine to make it produce more power at the expense of the engine, turb lag and the owner. A turbo says upfront the engine is too small. GM is putting a small 4 cylinder in the new Acadia and Traverse, 5-to-6-thousand-pound vehicles. Our V6 2017 Acadia gets 34 MPG highway, a 4 cylinder will never get that nor have the power or response the V6 has. GM has just lost us as a customer.

Have a used Dodge RAM a 2017 1500 and it has been great. Looking at new trucks ...no way. Let her ride until they change back. Bought a Honda Ridgeline in 2020 for my wife and we love it. Much like an SUV and we use it as the family vehicle and the Ram as the farm truck. Both are expected to last well past 10 years.

Everyone I talk with ask Why can’t they make a good simple basic affordable reliable Truck? Yep greed, government, restrictions and control have ruined everything! The common man can’t afford an 75k plus Truck!!! What a mess!

I have a 2007 Dodge Dakota. Manual trans, no power windows or locks, it's pretty basic. But it gets better gas mileage than an automatic. Heat and air still work. The only things I wish it had was fog lights and an adjustable steering wheel. And since I broke my left wrist, really wishing it was fully automatic! But yeah, they don't make them like they used to. 💖💖💖

I was looking for a new truck to replace a 2004 f-150 5.4l earlier this year. Gave up and put $3500 into repairs on the 04 since at least I know that truck. I work the truck like a truck, I don't want a super fancy thing that I'm worried about actually using for fear of getting a scratch in the bed or something

i remember tucks and cars being manufacture in the 1960-1980. no one would pay any kind of money for a truck with over 100k miles on it because it was consider to be used up. I know the government mandates have caused some problems with truck but they also caused companies to come up with innovations and now it is commo0n for truck to last 200k to 300k miles.and get great gas mileage. it has not been all bad. Manufactures have chosen to stop manufacturing all autos that fall below the 30k threshold because they have a lower profit margin. it is almost impossible to by a base model with just the electric window and mirrors anymore. it is called greed

I had a 2014 RAM 1500 with the Hemi. Regular cab shorted. Great at first, but it developed the Hemi tick, probably due to the MDS. Meticulously maintained with only 44k. Wouldnt touch a new American pickup. there is too much. risk. I ended up buying a Ridgeline. Not a capable farm truck per, se. but works for me.

I think the US market needs that toyota IMV 0. A very basic work truck that is dirt cheap with a long bed. If they were sold here in the US the roads would be filled with them. Every delivery vehicle would be one and half the farm trucks. But they will never sell them in the US. We dont get the affordable stuff.

Brad, I agree with your views 100%. I have a 23 year old Tundra with 160k miles and have reached the conclusion that it's going to have to go the distance with me. I have the 4.7L V8 that was designed for the Lexus back in the 90's, and it has been a good one so far. Toyota just recalled 600k 2022 Tundras and seem to be blaming the main bearing failures on "debris in the oil", which is almost certainly Marketing Department balderdash. The Toyota engineers should know how to build a good oiling system by now. They just forfeited their "legendary reliability" with this screw-up and I don't see them getting their mojo back anytime soon.

My dad has a 2007 Chevy Suburban 1500 with active fuel management. Has 460k miles on it and has never even had a water pump. Heads have never been off. Still gets 17mpg around town. Changes the oil every 5k miles with synthetic. I think the reason people have problems is that they go by the oil change light coming on and the oil is too far gone by then. Just my opinion.

Trucks took over the mini van , so all the people that dint really use or need a truck wanted all those extras.. the market responded. think like everything else , nothing is made to last, that way they can sell new. Even all the mechanics are complaining about quality .. I have a 2016 Chev 2500 H D work truck with a 6 liter old style.. hoping its my last truck as it only has 75,000 so far so good and not a lot of junk to break. I wish it didn't have power windows. roll down were much easier to adjust. Good luck with yours
