Goudurix Review | The World's Worst Steel Coaster | Parc Astérix Vekoma Custom Looper

Ойын-сауық

Is this the worst steel roller coaster ever built? Goudurix has a reputation among theme park fans for being one of the jankiest, roughest roller coasters ever created!

I've never ridden it, but somehow Goudurix is so iconic to me. I remember seeing onride videos of it from way back and it always seemed like such a cool ride. With Parc Asterix retracking Zeus I really hope they will invest in Goudurix as well. Python at Efteling is so much better after the retrack so I hope they will do the same with Goudurix. New supports, new track and profiling and it could last for another 30 years.

I think they did retrack this ride in about 2012. The only problem is that they used the original design, which means the same bad transitions remained. It needed something more along the lines of what Python at Efteling got where the track profile was changed to make it smoother

It's never gonna happen. They're gonna demolish it to make way for their next big coaster (supposedly around the end of the 2020s). At best they will upgrade the trains before that, but that'll be it.

What happened: Goudurix was the very first coaster Vekoma designed using Auto CAD and other computer aided tools (or at least one of the very first with Blue Hawk and French Revolution @ Lotte World, all three originally built in 1989) Obviously, Vekoma did not quite figure it out yet. Dare I say, no one did back then. B&M had not built their first ride then, Arrow was still sticking to their hand-drawn cookie-cutter designs, Mack was mostly building small e-powered, wild mouses & bobsleighs. The reason Parc Astérix is keeping Goudurix so far is... it still draws lots of crowds AWAY from other rides. Hence fast operations. Astérix gets 2+ hour lines sometimes on Tonnerre 2 Zeus and OzIris. So anything that can attract people away from those rides is good - even a 30+ year old janky Vekoma looper.

I think it’s bad rail alignment that makes these so rough. When Vekoma replaced the track on Great Nor’easter they stated that they used their modern alignment and flexibility on their original 1200 track style. The only part that wasn’t replaced is from the station to the crest of the lift, and even at low speeds you can feel shakiness and the train shuffling side to side. But when you begin the first drop, it suddenly becomes very smooth

2:59 biiiiig mistake. As a multiple times Goudurix survivor, I can tell you that this is a completely different beast in the back and the front. My first ride on this was in the back row, and I was prepared for the worst after all the horror stories. When I exited, I just thought "huh. That was actually not too bad. A bit bumpy, but nowhere near as bad as I expected". But then, when I rode it in the front? All hell broke loose. It was so bad that the apple that was in my backpack (yes, I had to take my backpack with me in the train) was completely crushed beyond recognition after that second ride.

Rode this in the mid-1990s. At the time it was the highlight of the park, as it was the most forceful and intense coaster they had, so got 3 or 4 rides in one day. After all these years I still have vivid memories of the head-banging - unless I really, really strained my neck, my ears would be on fire at the end of the ride, from banging repeatedly against the restraints. Still, I think it is an iconic ride, would like to repeat it again one day, hope they never tear it down.

I've also ridden Goudurix once but I was expecting the worst, but surprisingly, I got off thinking it was decent. I didn't find it to be too rough. Sure there are some moments where it can be rough, but I think IMO, its the most underrated coaster I've ridden. 6 or 7/10 for me. I would enjoy it more if it had vest restraints, or had the Python treatment, but as of now IMO, it's not too bad.

Actually, I don't think Parc Asterix (it's my home park) will tear it down anytime soon. This coaster is iconic, one of the symbole of the park. And it has become, in a weird way, even more iconic since it's world known as one of the worst coaster. Parc Asterix has actually been doing work on it these past few years, with ... retracking. But also with some paint work and other technical small changes. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to make it smoother. But I do believe that if you know how to ride it (I've done it dozen of times), you can have a decent experience !

I’m a Parisian and always go to the Parc Astérix. Goudurix is a character in one of the comics (play on words with “goût du risque”, like with every name in the comics) and wasn’t created for the ride. I always do it because it’s fun to get messed up, but yeah, it’s intense. It gives you 4 times gravity force and I grey out on the loops. It’s uncomfortable just like you said and it gives you a half hour headache and makes you sleepy. The park will keep it because PEOPLE LOVE IT exactly because of how bad it is. Personally, I never miss it when I visit. The people waiting in line aren’t naive, they’re masochist French maniacs like me.

It was my cred number 69... not a pleasure xD This ride was the Vekoma take on Arrow's loopers, but failed to convince. Layout is great, but those old school Vekomas were just junk. Here is the list of actions taken on the coaster: - 1988: Goudurix is built with design problems recognized by Vekoma - 2000: Trains are modified and various tests of different types of wheels - 2007: The electric Process is totaly replaced - 2007: The station is themed giant Drakkar - 2009: The rails are scraped, cleaned and repainted - 2010: The chassis of both trains are replaced by new (that are heavier) - 2011: Attempting to change the wheel axles - 2013: Retrack and reparirs of several damaged rail parts Yes, it was "retracked" 10 years ago. However, what it needs now is a full retrack, same as happened to Python @ Efteling, wich replaced the track from drop to brakes with the new track design, made with their new building technique.

Yes, the transitions are truly awful, but I kept my head back the entire time and experienced no head banging whatsoever (well maybe except after the brake run, I did hurt my neck on the turn, but still). I really hope they can keep this ride for a bit longer, maybe give it new trains and everything. That butterfly inversion, while it does look awkward and pretty painful, looks very unique, and I wish more coasters (especially B&M’s) used this element more often.

For some reason I always love Taylors bad reviews, possibly because he always finds the best in everything, and approaches everything with a positive attitude. So when he gives it a bad score, you know its, really, really, bad.

I thought Goudurix would forever be my least fave steel coaster, ever since I rode it in the 90s. I even rode it twice, front/back because I was convinced that no ride could be THAT bad, it must've just been a bad seat the first time. It wasn't, of course. The whole ride was bad. But then it happened. This spring, I was in Athens and went to Allou Fun Park. There they have a small coaster called Loop-it and even though it's a small, short ride, it manages to cram all of Goudurix's pain into just a few seconds of absolute torture. And I have a really high tolerance for rough coasters - hence the second ride on Goudurix (as well as a few others). But Loop-it nearly killed me. Because there was no queue (literally nobody else was waiting to ride), the operator told me that I could ride again. I said, "WHY?" The shoulder bars slammed me back and forth five times in quick succession in the inversion, hard enough to nearly knock my glasses off. Both my ears were beet red and sore from the pummelling they took in the rest of the ride and I had a massive headache for the next two days. I legit thought I might've gotten a concussion. Not only was Loop-it the only coaster I've refused to re-ride when offered, it's also the only model of coaster that if I saw another one at a park, I'd skip that one, too. Credit be damned, it's just not worth it.

4 Coaster Battle for the worst: Goudurix vs. Original Ninja (SFOG) vs. Ninja (SFST.L) vs. Vekoma SLCs I'm kind of worried for the sheep since there doesn't seem to be a net under the track so I can imagine something might fly off the ride and injure or kill a sheep.

A modern Vekoma like Lech Coaster or Fønix could do wonders with that space. It'd be nice if they kept the colour scheme of Goudurix though.

I rode it in 2016 in the back. It was fairly brutal and I only rode it once. Blue Hawk was a lot more enjoyable with the new trains. For me it was the first coaster in the park since we were staying at the on site hotel and the entrance/exit is right behind it. I highly recommend the hotel and the buffet was really good (not the typical park food you would expect and they had a really nice wine selection).

You can also add Viper at SFGA, The Great American Scream Machine at SFGA and Drachen Fire at Busch Gardens Williamsburg and the Manhattan Express at New York New York Resort in Las Vegas. Btw, both the Viper and ME were both manufactured by TOGO. Would love to add this to my coaster cred but probably won't make it out of the states.

They should give goudurix the same treatment as Python at Efteling and give it either Vekoma vest restraints or SunKid trains (trains for vekoma/arrow loopers that have T bars). To fix the awkward transitions in and out of the batwing they could add some nice bunny hopps before and after the batwing so the transition isn't so long that it's basically just a slightly tilted straight track that slowly banks 180 degrees lol

I hope one day either they made a total retracking, like new rails and profiling, or destroy it but replace it by a good B&M or Intamin looper with a layout paying homage to Goudurix, with perhaps an updated butterfly, Intamin would be able to do this kind of thing. Especially since CDA (owner of the park) has already ordered them 4 roller coasters for their parks (Objectif Mars, Kondaa, Toutatis and Mahuka), why not a fifth? :) But given the investments already made for Toutatis, it won't be any time soon! And then there's the case of Tonerre 2 Zeus, which is getting worse and worse and deserves an RMC retrack.

The fact that it's at least forceful means it can't be the worst Vekoma. Joker's Revenge at Fiesta Texas/Jester at SFNO was both rough, painful, *and* boring and forceless. It's the most perfectly awful coaster that I've ever experienced.

I rode it only once 15 years ago. But, never again! He looks impressive. It is a 35 year old icon for the park. But it is a treacherous torture. If Parc Asterix would like to keep it (for nostalgic reasons) I suggest that they order a completely new clone with upgrades. (just like Efteling did with Phyton, their double loop corckscrew coaster from 1981) !

Ninja at SFOG, very similar with its layout and elements like the butterfly was also bad till they gave it the new trains and restraints. Do you think this could also be much better with those vests or is the problem more with the profiling than the headbanging?

Imo the smoothest MK1200 in the world is 'Millenium' at Fantasy Island, it's a 150ft (110 drop) with 3 inversions and it's superrrrr smooth, seriously. Also that park has the worlds biggest SLC The Osyssey, which is the joint second biggest invert in the world, joint with Banshee just behind Alpengeist. It's not super smooth but it's better than standard SLCs and it's forceful af

I can imagine that the roughness varies greatly depending on the temperature or the person who is running the train technically. During my rides I found the ride quite comfortable for an MK-1200. But I rode it in October when the temperatures were rather cool. In the summer heat, it might drive completely differently. I also had the same phenomenon at Dragon Khan in Portaaventura. Many rant about the roller coaster and call for it to be demolished, but I found it super smooth on my rides in November.

They keep Goudrix because it was the first major coaster for the park and an Icon in France. I would suggest a re-track by CSM like Efteling has done with Python, and then add new software and trains on it. The new track of Python has been Heartlined, so they could do the same with Goudrix. Goudrix was the first full cirquit coaster Vekoma designed themselves, without Arrow Dynamics involved.

The ride seems to have turns that turn in increments rather than a nice, fluid parabolic turn. Like, "OK, we want to turn 90 degrees to the left, so we'll have it turn 25 degrees with this small radius, then we'll turn it another 40 degrees with a somewhat larger radius, then do the remaining 25 degrees with the small radius again."
